Any truck driver that's been working more than a couple weeks knows how much is tractor and trailer weigh empty (within a couple thousand pounds) they don't they should not be driving
@georgegeorgepht4 жыл бұрын
Some things new drivers should keep in mind: Stay on the interstate as long as possible to avoid small streets. Never ever do a u turn. Find a large shoping mall or business and use their shipping and receiving entrance. Worst case if u got down a bad road u need to stop and ask for help. Asking for help or a spotter while u back is free. Even calling police to help shut down a road while u back out is free. But a tow bill or damage to someone's property is not free. It's very expensive.. The long way around is sometimes much safer then a easy short cut.

@herpes0106 жыл бұрын
In that situation where you didn't hear the pin lock-in, once he was straightened out I would go ahead and set trailer brakes, re-pull the pin, then back into it one more time just to make damn sure it's locked, just for future reference. Even though it looked like it was locked it could've just been caught on the edge. Call me crazy, but that's what I would've done. Would've only taken less than a minute to do just to be sure it doesn't come apart going down the highway. Good job though!
@andrewbrenneman95926 жыл бұрын
Maybe the 5th wheel plates need a redesign to require a locking pin so that accidental unlock can't happen.

Good work brother! Question can't tell from the camera entirely but could you have hooked from front side to trailer, Had tractor set brakes and pulled trailer forward into tractor. I feel like the tractor would have been more of a anchor then a pivoting trailer on sand. But at same time i could be wrong and if pulled that way that faring may have exploded. Either way got it done good work man!

Why does pulling the king pin(5th wheel) come to drivers mind ?
@LJT79076 жыл бұрын
some drivers think that if they pull the pin and can disconnect, they can maybe in this circumstance loop around to other side of the trailer and hook back up and save it them selves. It never works.
@philsmidwestclassiccars1506 жыл бұрын
Because, they think they can bobtail out rom under the trailer & hook back up in a jack-knife position, until they pull the pin, then realize they are already in a jack-knife. Mama's gonna get a piece of that co-driver. I thought I saw her take a couple swings at him already when they were outside arguing. Trent, I wonder if you could have put one line on the front of the trailer and the other on the pull pin on the cab, and pulled both of them at once? You might have been able to pull the trailer into the jaws and lock it, or at least keep it on the 5th wheel until you had the rig straight enough that they could back under the trailer and lock it.

Simple winchout turned into a very costly job due to a very dumb mistake by the codrive! I don't get what's behind their reasoning for pulling the pin on the 5th wheel.I think maybe some of these so-called driving schools would teach them about this situation not working!
@NightCrawler8105 жыл бұрын
Lynn Moore the reason someone will pull the pin is so that they can unhook from the trailer and hopefully drive out from up under that way when the to truck driver gets there all he would have to do is straighten out the trailer but if that’s what they were thinking then the landing gear should have been lowered and it wasn’t so clearly both drivers aren’t experienced enough to know that they were to far into the jackknife at that point shit happens

Seems like when a u-turn call comes in dispatch needs to ask if the 5th wheel has been pulled. If yes then add an extra ($300) charge to the customer!
@stanpatterson50336 жыл бұрын
If they'd lie about it to the tow driver's face, how easy would it be for them to lie about it on the phone ? Only thing you could do (and kind of sneaky to do it) would be to tell them during the phone call that there is an extra ($300) charge if they've pulled the fifth wheel. At that point, the customer is likely to hang up and call another tow company. I think the best thing to do is just what Trent has been doing.... ask the driver point-blank, then go physically check for himself. If you have to call out another truck and charge for it, it's not like the customer can just drive away, if they could just drive away, they'd have never called for a tow in the first place.

I'm not saying this as a arm chair driver. just a though on another way to do that pull. Given the angle of the trailer to the road, I might have tried dropping the trailer where it was. Landing gear down and deflate the air bags on the tractor. Then continued the front pull. Once freed from the berm and trailer. I would have drove the tractor back to the other side and re-hitched the two units and driven back on the road in the original direction. I'd give it a 50/50 shot..lol no criticism. just a another thought from the box
