The tractor is now fixed! The clutch was just really bad out of adjustment! I adjusted it up and It stops and shifts fine!

how did you adjust the clutch? I have a 196X ford 4000 diesel 4cyl and I am having the same issues.

david lynes Where the clutch linkage goes into the side of the tractor, mine has an adjustment bolt to take the slack out of the clutch pedal. (I think this is only on the dual clutch models) I took the slack out of the pedal, and the clutch was better. The manual said to set around 1 1/4" of free travel in the pedal and my pedal had about 3"! Mine is still not 100% it still gets stuck in gear but not near as much as it used too! I hope that makes sense and helps!

hey thanks for your quick reply. I'll play with mine again. my clutch has zero resistance and goes to the floor. I bought it last October but ive put less than 3hrs on it.

david lynes Your welcome! I'm not a mechanic so I'm not sure about yours... It may have something more wrong with it.

@@davidlynes8614 haha, are you me? I am having exactly same experience as you. bought a used tractor last year October. used less than 2 hours. now in May I found the same trouble. The mechanic said need split it and will cost 5000 or 6000 Canadian $.

When you stop your dexta for the day, take a piece of wood and depress the clutch and install it between the steering wheel and the clutch lever. Next time you use the tractor, it will shift perfectly. You are essentially creating space between pressure and clutch plate letting it "dry out"
