I retired in 2019 after 45 years of farming. My dad started me out on an IH Super C with a set of two row front mounted cultivator and rear drag out sweeps. I plowed corn and soybeans in the field with the hands who were running 6 row rigs on JD 730 diesels. In soybeans, we used stove pipe fenders to put as much dirt to the crop as possible in order to cover up small weeds and vines in the day before post emergent herbicides. Those fenders were flared at the ends to spoon the dirt away from the beans as forward motion threw dirt towards the crop rows. It was rudimentary in comparison to how things are today, but it worked. When the beans were “layed by”, we walked the fields and either chopped or hand pulled the escaped weeds. Labor was cheap and the days were long, but I wouldn’t have traded any of it for all the money in the world.

Love the old Oliver tractors. My cousin had six of them, both gas and diesel, and loved working them all in the hay field and row crops. Nothing like seeing your cultivator and knowing how to cultivate crops. Thanks to my dad for showing me how. The young farmers today depend too much on technology. Let the row markers down on the planters and aim for a tree or a fence post on the other end of the field. That was my GPS when I was farming! Had a few crooked rows but that just increased my plant population and yield!

Something about cultivating will calm you right down. I will say I like a mid mount cultivator a lot better than a three point. Easier to see what’s going on and a lot easier to follow the rows in a curve. I know where there’s a 4 row 640 sitting in a junkyard complete with the cover gang for the three point that I need to snag one of these days.

I had a neighbor that was a WWI vet and a lifetime farmer. He had one of the first Farmall C's to be sold and became quite expert using it. I had some weedy beans that needed cleaning out and we had a 200 Farmall. The beans were about 12" tall and he advised me to pull the end of the sweeps in to almost touching. It worked best according to him to run in 3rd wide open. I set the sweeps one inch apart and tried it out. I found that even with the sweeps set several inches apart there was only about an inch each way, so the close setting was not a big issue. It cleaned the soybeans and I only plowed up a few. That was in 1967.
@dwightl58632 жыл бұрын
That arrangement took some skillful driving especially at that speed. Don't think even GPS could cut it that close.
@larrymcever46012 жыл бұрын
@@dwightl5863 Truth was that wide open in third (about 4.5 mph) the sweeps would be throwing the soil toward the row. If the sweeps were not centered on the row the weight of the soil would roll up any small plants. If you were rolling soil toward the row you had to be a skilled operator. The goal was to run as fast as possible while not covering the crop since that would cover the most weeds. This guy looked very skilled to me.
@dwightl58632 жыл бұрын
@@larrymcever4601 I misunderstood your description. I thought you were saying that there was but an inch between the shovels and and plants. I've done my share of cultivating as well. Way more fun doing the second and third passes at speed.
