Having worked at a foundry, slag is mostly limestone, it serves multiple purposes in processing steel, while it is a molten liquid, the powdered limestone is put on top of the metal to prevent excess oxidation, a thermal barrier to slow heat loss from the metal, and a sort of catalyst in the process with carbon to purify and homogenize the steel during aeration. So,it's melted and resolidified limestone along with steel impurities.

I love the way you use your tractor. You use it rough, and to the max that the tractor can do. Not careless, or improper, just the way it takes to get the job done. I do it exactly the same way! Sometimes I watch someone use their tractor and it's almost like it is the family car. It takes them twice as long to get the job done, if it gets done at all.

Tim when they get steel red hot and hit it, little flakes fall off, this is slag. It also occurs when they melt it into liquid, the impurities in the metal rise to the top and that’s what the slag is. Never knew it had a purpose before today though!

Mr. Coltrane is correct about the use of limestone in the production of steel. They also line the ladle with sand limestone known as limestone dust. Years ago people in Pittsburgh began using slag instead of 2-B river rock to provide drainage around their homes, only to find the acidity each their concrete blocks. Slag might work well as a base, but not next to the concrete due to acidic action. As an alternative use 2-B limestone and cover it with 2-3 inches of dust then compact. No flat tires, or acidity.
@ohiofarmer2542 жыл бұрын
The slag is actually part lime. A quick google search revealed that lime is used to draw the impurities out during the steel making process. I peak an interest in my mind because a steel mill has a limestone dock on the river over here they bring in the ships unload the stone cook it , grind it, and send it by rail car to the steel mill and I always wondered why this video spurred my curiosity to google it

I have a 1650 JD hoe attachment for the 2440. It is just a light duty farm type backhoe but still does an amazing amount of work. The side push on your hoe attachment looks to be stronger than on my 1650. Does your backhoe have a control to reduce flow for swing? I added one of these to the 1650 and suddenly the whole operation of the machine smoothened out. It was getting way to much flow to the swing without the extra control valve, very tricky to operate.

I work for Nucor, best company I’ve ever worked for. Slag is limestone that they pour into the molten steel, the lime stone grabs the impurities from the molten steel. Slag will harden down to like concrete over time. Fun fact, in Pittsburgh we literally filled a valley up with slag from the steel mill J&L

Does slag put heavy metals in the ground that might leach out? Was watching a concrete pour and it was said slag might have iron in it, that might cause rust coming to the top of the pour. Just wondering.
@randykane4742 жыл бұрын
Nevermind, from Wikipedia: ferrous slags have been used as soil conditioners to rebalance soil pH and fertilizers as sources of calcium and magnesium.[18] Because of the slowly released phosphate content in phosphorus-containing slag, and because of its liming effect, it is valued as fertilizer in gardens and farms in steel making areas.

Great video on what these tractors can do! I was just curious on if you've entertained the idea of getting a mini? I definitely miss Casey video's. I bought my 1025R back in 2017 after watching your video's. I ended up doing alot of backhoe work and decided to get a Johndeere 26G cabbed mini from the same dealer that I picked up my 1025R from. I mainly use the 26G now and have had both on some projects. I was doing about 200 hour's on the 1025R per year and I'm almost at 500 hour's on my mini in a year and a half. It's pretty much my go to on a lot of projects. I grew up on a small farm and did not have a lot of equipment. I'm not in business but definitely enjoy being able to play with smaller equipment and getting job's done more efficiently. I started looking into a larger 3 or 5 series and the prices are getting to a point to where I'm now looking at a small skid steer. Keep up the great work

@@TractorTimewithTim I was going to but we got the Adjustable add a grapple, and it was going to be too hard for me to do the hoses myself. Even Messick's told me that it would have to be custom measured. My local Kubota dealer is also a dealer for Precision mfg. They actually had to adjust it twice, because they had never done the Adjustable one before. If I eventually get one for our bucket, I feel I can do that one myself. It really meets our needs and it can pick up a round hay bale as long as we have plenty of rear ballast in the tires and behind our Kubota on the 3 point hitch. I filled in an inground pool with a 6' wide concrete slab all the way around it with a L2800 kubota w/ loader and box blade, I wish I would've had pallet forks cause there was some big chunks in that job. I had a sledge hammer, 12 lb, and used a 4x4 post under those pieces. It all broke up pretty well as the concrete was only 6 yrs old.
