I remember listening to fast car on the radio with my grandfather while he drove his old ford truck across Texas. My grandfather was a cold, backward, relic that was best left in the stubborn past. But as we listened to this song, I stroke up a rare conversation to pick at his old values and belief's. I asked him about the song. His relpy was something to the effect of his fondness of the assumed man's voice echoing from the speaker. As he spoke, I knew then this prolific and important voice was not a man but a very talented, all encompassing, Black, Woman. The insight I felt at that moment assured me that I was the future and he was the past. I did not dare correct him in fear his haste would silence the melody. In all the secrets I had to keep to save myself this was the best secret to keep from him. As I grew older I learned that correction and knowledge was the best way to change the past. But at the time knowing the world held a voice greater than this old man could ever accept was assurance that one day I would have one too.
