I first watched this film as a teenager. Now as an adult, I can appreciate how cleverly executed this series of scenes is. The teacher is so clearly grooming his student, and it's visibly creepy. Yet he's portrayed as most people who do what he's done probably are: deeply deluded by his desires. Tracy is clearly an emotionally immature victim, but she's portrayed as most victims probably are: confident that they're in fact consenting to being taken advantage of. This complexity, I think, stands the test of time even in the post "Me Too" era.

Very well said, and exactly the kind of argument that (I think) stands to explain why so many different things can-and should-be portrayed onscreen in films, depiction doesn’t equal endorsement; and even as times change, that is something that doesn’t…

7:37 A predator who knowingly grooms and then plays the victim and a hopeless sheltered loser with no social smarts and genuinely believes they've found love probably cry the same way when they get caught. He may be deluded instead of evil, but the damage toward the victim is the same either way. They don't show it, but clearly the principal did the right thing by not softening at the crying. That's why I like this scene.

Sure, Tracy was annoying, but she wasn’t sabotaging or stepping on people to get ahead. The tearing down of the posters was just a fit of rage and frustration, and it didn’t cost anyone the election. She also appeared to have genuine affection for her teacher Dave. Besides, an adult that pursues a child for sex bears all the blame. No exceptions. An adult in an authoritative positions knows better than that. I think that the bad characterization of Tracy was just a fabrication in McAllister’s mind to justify his own actions, and McAllister is just another immature high school teacher, which there are a lot of.

This is exactly how the movie wants us to perceive the characters. The concept of ethics vs morals is clear. While we question Tracys morality in her actions (her affair, attitude and tearing of the posters) we know in the deep end she hasn’t committed anything unethical and is likely, simply a victim of the events that developed. On the other hand, McAllister is justifying his unethical ethical views on child consent, corruption and resentment though Tracy, thinking himself he is doing the morally good thing to do whereas he has become everything he wanted to destroy (Dave’s actions and why of thinking). I simply love how realistic is this film in portraying human paradox.

"Who cares about this stupid election? We all know it doesn't matter who gets elected president of Carver. Do you really think it's going to change anything around here? Make one single person smarter or happier or nicer? The only person it does matter to is the one who gets elected. The same pathetic charade happens every year, and everyone makes the same pathetic promises just so they can put it on their transcripts to get into college. So vote for me, because I don't even want to go to college, and I don't care, and as president I won't do anything. The only promise I will make is that if elected I will immediately dismantle the student government, so that none of us will ever have to sit through one of these stupid assemblies again! Or don't vote for me! Who cares? Don't vote at all!"

If anyone caught that -“ I miss our long talks” that’s really subtle to say it became very sexual. She was groomed. It sounds like consent but it’s not, she’s still underage and see how she justified everything. That’s really good writing and again, the unreliable narrators .. really good script.

I just saw this film the other day because my brother told me how funny this was, but when I first saw the diner scene, I found it so incredibly disturbing because the teacher, knowing how lonely and isolated she is from the rest of her peers, uses this as a way to get to her and to make her feel some sort of acceptance. That made this scene all the more disturbing, along with the fact that Tracy is completely oblivious to the fact that she was raped. Even though this Is a comedy, this is was one of the most accurate and realistic portrayals of Pedophilia because Tracy dismisses any idea that she was taken advantage of and suggest that it was true love. Obviously, this is a very integral part of the film, but I feel like, based on a few comments I read from various videos, that it often gets ignored. Also, the victim blaming that Mr. McAllister does to Tracy whenever he says “actions have consequences and affect other people” I found to be deeply disturbing. Great comedy and one of the funniest films I’ve seen in a while.

I remember seeing this movie in theaters with just a handful of other movie goers, and all of us couldn't stop watching and laughing. Of course the movie has some serious plots and crimes broken, lying, cheating, adultery, sex with a minor etc. It's just told in a way you have to laugh with it and enjoy the ride. I think this movie helped re-open up those serious and non-serious sex-comedies in the late 90s to the mid 2000s, . "American Pie", "American Beauty", "Road Trip", "40-Year-Old Virgin", "Waiting...", "Pretty Persuasion" etc. I can never get tired of watching these kinds of movies till this day. :)

Jim also uses Paul as a means to take Tracy down in the election. This movie has people using and taking advantage of each other left and right. Payne isn’t afraid to explore and find the sick humor in the seedier side of humanity. His characters are often despicable, but in ways that are never too far removed from reality and, whether we like to admit it or not, relatability as well. I think this makes for some of the best social satire out there. Both this and Sideways are tragicomedy masterpieces.

A lot of us that were young when this premiered thought Tracy was the villain. Yeah she was annoying and out of pocket at times but she was a whole teenager. She was raised by a successful, single mother who instilled drive and ambition into her daughter. Possibly because she for whatever reason had to raise a child alone whilst striving to do better for both of them. Not to mention, Tracy was an only child so all the pressure to go above and beyond was all on her. She stayed at school long after school hours which leaves me to believe she was avoiding going home. Either mom was home or not home enough leaving Tracy alone in her house.Nothing wrong with instilling confidence and wanting to do well within your children, HOWEVER, some parents take it to the extreme to where it’s basically abuse; sometimes stunting some of their kid’s development. Hence, Tracy’s inability to be social and pick up on red flags. In comes Dave, who peaked in high school, having his sights on Tracy from the jump. He was very aware that she had no friends meaning that he had been observing her for quite sometime 🤮 I wonder if he was predatory during his high school years? Then, McCallister. He told his best friend that him doing this to Tracy was wrong BUT he didn’t report it. Then had the audacity to blame Tracy for the whole thing. He may not have thought much about her before the disgusting events but he sure did afterwards. And she had him feeling some type of way 🥴 her actively trying to do good academic wise; chasing her hopes and dreams made him feel inadequate. So he tried to sabotage her. He was trying to have a full blown affair with his former best friend’s wife and he had the nerve to blame Tracy for that as well basically. The adults in her life failed her, including her absent by choice father. It’s interesting seeing things from a different perspective when you get older, isn’t it?

The relationship seems to have left Tracy Flick undamaged. In real life, she would have been utterly destroyed, with her ambitions derailed. She probably would have dropped out of high school.

I disagree - she wasn't just the usual high school female that would have been those things - rather she was also a sociopath - and it's that quality that makes her different.

There’s not much of her life shown before the affair so maybe she may have had somewhat of a different personality. I mean she may have been just ambitious but the grooming and after effects could have made her worst in that sense and she could have taken out her anger and rage via her ambitions.

Tracy comes from money and a mother with a powerful career. Most likely she would've paid her way in life, cheated and walk on many to achieve her ambitious ( narcissistic) goals. Just look at many government officials and politicians since forever.

I don't think that Mr. Novotny had the right to ask Tracy about her not having any Friends. Too me that's too personal. She knew deep in her heart she didn't have any Friends because she wasn't a nice person. Too ruthless and ambitious. I'm glad she got Shade thrown at her in the Dorm at Georgetown. Hard to believe it was the Home of the burgeoning Grunge Movement, Starbucks, and 50 Shades of Grey

Notice at the end of the movie, she mentioned that everyone signed Paul's yearbook and barely anyone signed hers? That's telling right there. She spent the better part of her time in Carver High volunteering for every activity under the sun just to build up her resume for college. She has no friends because she's mean to everyone and only cares about climbing up the mountain and looking down at all the undesirables. If she took the time to make friends and have fun every once in a while, maybe people would like her.

@@American-Zero Uh huh! If I were a College Admissions Officer I wouldn't take her. Too ruthless, ambitious, would do anything to claw her way to the top. I lived for getting My Yearbook Signed and Signing Folks. Another problem, is that her Mother was a "Stage Mother". Novotny co incidentally was the Last Name of Michael on Queer As Folk (US).
@American-Zero

@@laminage Really? I didn't know that. Anyways yeah, I don't think I'd take her either. The whole movie she showed that she was selfish, self righteous, narcissistic and at times a horrible person to be around. Her being a social climber is one of the reasons Jim didn't want her to become Student Body President. It doesn't help that her Mom is one of those stage moms who tried to live her failed dreams of success through her daughter...even going as far to sue the school if word got out about her affair with Novotny. If I knew someone like Tracy in High School, I wouldn't want to be around her.

@@American-Zero Yep! I remember watching Popstars in 2001 where there was a Young Lady whose Mother thought she was gooing to be the next big thing and they didn't take her and her Mother was shocked. When they did a Documentary about Popstars all over the world, there was a Mother who would go to every audition.

@@laminage Oh my God, you think that's bad..check out dance Moms. Those little kids are like trained seals, all of them are being pushed by their overbearing mother. They demand for them to try harder and scold them when they don't meet their standards. Showbiz Moms are the worst..they try and live vicariously through their daughters. Mama June did it with Honey Boo Boo, Kris Jenner did it with her daughters..so many Moms trying to follow their failed dreams through their kids.

Weird question, but did Linda know that Jim knew about Dave's affair with Tracy before it was revealed?
@richieboostajr.35
@richieboostajr.35 Жыл бұрын
I would say no, at least not until Dave had to admit why he got fired from teaching. Jim wouldn't rat on his best friend, even though Jim knew it was wrong in the first place. He even gave him disappointed eyes in the office with the principal.

It’s pretty smart to use the school as an allegory for politics and how they say what they want you to hear.. and ther is always truth in the lies.. but it’s all skewed.. unreliable narrator was such a good choice
