Exactly....and the saddest part when you suffered alone and had no care or support. Mine is the opposite, the movie reminded me when I was neglected food by my family being told I'm fat while I was only average and my friends and relatives telling me the same so from being neglected food and later in my twenties I started to starve myself that I developed savere ulcers. I was suffering alone for many years till I met my husband who took care of me. ❤

I was in my 30's, active in my addictions and would spend weekends hungover watching these movies all day. I learned so much about eating disorders, mental health battles, domestic violence signs, etc even though I was caught up in a battle myself. 20 years clean and sober now and these are still my favorite movies of all time. So informative and comforting at the same time. Lifetime 1990's forever ❤️💯❤️😊

No one gives a shit until you’re emaciated. It’s sad. I cried when she looked in the mirror and the nutritionist asked her to describe what she sees. That was such an accurate portrayal of what’s it’s like. For me the body dysmorphia never left after I recovered. I ended up relapsing 8 years later.

not very many ED movies cover the subject of relapse. I love how this movie carries it out, how the ED tends worsen each relapse, and how they are often triggered by some sort of trauma (her friend's death). from the viewpoint of someone who has an ED, it's all very accurate, so many (sadly) relatable quotes too

One thing I really appreciate about this movie is how it shows that the Mom has a healthy relationship with food and her body and encourages that in her daughters, and her daughter develops an ED. Even the best parenting can’t prevent everything, but the best parenting responds well to everything.

The mother was constantly manipulating her daughters ina sneaky way.. she told Lexi she had gained a few pounds, which she had but what’s unforgivable is going through her diary, making double gynaecologist appointments for them etc.. talking about her feelings about the divorce and their dad.. She used Lexi as her bestie instead of being a mother. She couldn’t wait to sneak to Pamela, and gained absolutely nothing apart from killing Jen and breaking up her friendship with Lexi bcs she was jealous of losing the control she had over Lexi. 😢I hated her through this entire movie. 😊 And if she had a shred of respect she would NOT be at the hospital constantly staring at poor Pamela as shes just been told her daughters dead… geeeeze how rude

I agree by the end of my movie where mom to said Lexi not only are you on your own the part Lexi said back to her mom she didn’t want to die showing her mom that she was finally ready to get better and also I’m proud of Lexi standing up to her father telling him before going back to hospital for treatment that he wasn’t going to be the one or her mom to save herself she had to have the courage save herself on her own and that it was her choice if she wanted saved as for Jennifer’s parents I was shocked that they didn’t wanna believe that own daughter’s eating disorder killed her and Lexi was there to try get her best friend help after she went into treatment herself that shows her best friend Lexi was looking out for her just like Lexi found her one only best friend died blaming herself for her death was not her fault I’m glad Jennifer in spirit was looking out for her when Lexi was struggling back with her own ED again.

Its not that. The ones who love people who battle these eating disorders dont want to believe or accept their loved one is struggling with a demon like this. A lot of people dont understand eating disorders; hence her mom saying "why is it so hard for you to just eat." then her mom starts to feel guilty for not accepting an illness sooner and it may be too late. This is a great movie and a great example of how they feel and react with this battle. Its all in the head. And takes away so many way too young. Look up anorexia and bulimia and read about it. read peoples stories. it literally shatters my heart knowing some people just cant look in the mirror and say "I look beautiful today." more often than not without feeling repulsed by their own body. the death rates are astounding and disheartening; painful to realize. theres a lot going on psychologically that even doctors can be unsure of as well. sometimes its just hard to approach a situation like that without feeling helpless to a loved one battling. And sometimes survivors also feel EVEN WORSE when they are treated like a patient rather than being treated like the person they are trying so hard to see in the mirror. :( sorry for the paragraph, i just want people to be educated on this subject.

They don’t understand why but they are extremely compelled to have things a certain way or do things a certain way. Don’t compare the two. I rewatched this movie again after a year and it’s still the best representation of eating disorders. It explains anorexia and how it’s not just about being skinny but other issues that play into it. Along with when Jen died and how Lexi relapsed. It was well made. I too have suffered from anorexia and bulimia and though now I can say I’m in recovery and have been for a while it is still a good movie.

I always think the same thing! First the coach subs her out, Lexy tells her 'I'm having and off day' and then the coach chews her out about her performance and tells her to lose weight. Doesn't matter who else heard it, Lexy did, and took it to heart. If the coach was so concerned she would say, "Lexi I'd like to speak with you after the game/before practice. You said you were having an off day, what's going on?" Or, if she was concerned about her performance or weight, help her develop a training and eating plan to improve.

She's young, going through teenage changes, her perfect family split up, her Dad won't give her the time of day, her Mother is busy with a career and trying to support her daughters, she's moved halfway across the country from her friends and the place she grew up. She's so eager to please and starved for love and attention. Lexi is in the perfect vulnerable state for any addiction to develop. Then she meets Jen, who checks all those boxes for her. Of course she isn't going to say anything against Jen's powerful addiction, but go along with it or risk losing the only love and attention she gets from a person.

This movie is the most accurate depiction of EDs probably a little TOO accurate. When I was in middle school and made my first best friend, I remember trying to recreate their friendship dynamic. I taught my friend some things, and I told them about what I did, mostly to show off. I don't remember too many of the details because blocked then out, but so remember feeling so proud about sharing this life with someone. - I didn't realize how sick I was. It's been about 10 years since then, and I fear I'm on the road to a relapse. I'm watching and writing this in the hopes that I will figure out how to get through it, hopefully in the healthiest way possible. It's definitely an addiction. It's really scary, because drug addicts can find ways to avoid drugs, but us with Eating Disorders cannot ever avoid food. It's completely mind consuming, to the point where you don't even know who you are without it anymore It's terrifying how when you're in it, you never feel sick enough.

It sounds like you have a lot of self-awareness now that you probably didn't back then. It can help to use the focus and self-discipline that an ED leeches off of to keep yourself healthy, especially when it's not realistic to say you won't track your food or your weight. Count a streak of the longest you can go without missing a meal (even if it's something small). Or focus on not falling _below_ a certain weight, even if you stay very close to it. If the control and the routine are more your thing, come up with small, healthy, boring meals that you can eat every day, preferably ones that involve some amount of "ritual," which usually feels calming for people predisposed to EDs. (I used to eat a prepackaged fruit and nut thing every morning, and I would put the hot water and my tea bag in a a travel mug, close it up, then eat the dried fruit and cashews while putting every almond I came across on the lid of my mug. When I finished, I'd eat the warmed almonds, then sip on my tea until lunch. It became something I didn't want to miss, and was really helpful in not letting me start any kind of "streak" of not eating.) Self-injury, drugs, disordered eating, drinking -- none of it ever lives up to its initial promise of bringing calm and helping manage the stress. Those things only ever consume what life you could be living, making you plan around the liquor stores being closed on Sundays, or a beach trip coming up, or how you'll manage a big family dinner. Sometimes the biggest deterrent to relapse is focusing all your memories on what it was like by the end -- ugly, miserable, *lonely,* and trapped. I hope you're doing well, and if you're not, I hope you will be soon. You'll have to forgive me, I'm going to dig back into my emo days, when the "It Gets Better" campaign was really getting on my nerves, and find you the excellent Bert McCracken quote I discovered. It helped me infinitely more than just being told it would get better: "It's about being proud of who you are, being proud of your situation and just being stoked that things are always going to get better or always gonna get worse and that's such a great thing." Keep fighting. Whether it's getting better or worse, that's how you know you're alive. And as long as you're alive, you have options, choices, hope, and infinite potential futures. _That's_ why it's such a great thing.

How about mothers raising teenage boys? At this time there wasn't much known about eating disorders. Both mothers and fathers knew practically nothing about this subject. Her mother is hoping she'll be better after a week or 2 of treatment also. Her father is just as worried and loves her just as much as her mother. My dad is the one to confide in in my family. My mom is the one who "strong arms" and didn't want to look at the reality of raising a teenage girl. He isn't strong arming her. He is very good at her bedside. He was very good his daughter. He didn't "strong arm" her at all. Ya know, Men aren't so bad. There are some bad men and fathers just as much as there are bad women and mothers. My mom was never, not even now as an adult, as comforting and understanding as Lynda Carter is in this movie! My father on the other hand was and still is!

@Alicante Actress Did you watch the whole movie? It was pretty clear from the start he didn't care about his children. When he called, he didn't want to talk to them. He was in a hurry to get off the phone. He didn't call or write on a regular basis, as a parent should if not with their kids. When the girls went to spend the holiday with him, instead of spending time with his children, he invited his new girlfriend along and forced them all together. The mother had to beg him to listen to his child - he didn't want to listen. He just stormed in and issued orders. Then wanted to go home! He didn't even want to stick around and see his child every day through this health crisis! Nope, he's a shitty father and had no right to barge in and assume he was welcome or that his input was wanted. Lots of parents are like this. They divorce their spouse, but they also abandon the children. A proper parent can call and/or write every day if not living with their children. They can ask questions about their lives, their schoolwork, their problems. When they have physical visits, they can spend time with their children without their new partner. Those are the ways they can put in the effort to be in their children's lives even if they're not with them physically. But they don't. They're just selfish jerks who abandon their children when they abandoned their spouse.

I totally agree. If the father hadn't stepped in both times, the mother would've found her dead on the bathroom floor. Also--there was no mention or evidence of physical abuse in the marriage.

Actually it was the mother I disagreed with. You can't dick around with stuff like that. They should have put her in the hospital and got her help long ago. Her mother needs to be more of a mother and get her daughter help so she doesn't die like her friend. Another problem was the mother at the end doesn't help much at all. She is trying to but really doing nothing. Anorexia is a psychological problem she's asking her daughter why is it so hard to eat. It's not hard to eat its hard to get past her mental disorder and telling her daughter 'I think you can I think you can' isn't going to help her get better take her to a hospital where she can actually get help.

I had an ED from age 13-21. It stemmed from me having a glow up one year and everyone at school telling me I should model. The boys who didn’t notice me the year before started liking me when I was tall,skinny and prettier. I became so obsessed with looking tall and thin to people and for myself. I heard “you should model” almost everyday. So my ED wasn’t fueled by a put down but by over complimenting. I also was having problems at home with my big sister and parents always fighting. I believe that was a control mechanism also. My family life was full of strife and I couldn’t control anything so I just started to hardly eat and becoming obsessed with fitting into smaller and smaller sizes. I look back now as a 36 year old woman and wonder how I survived my school years living on yogurt drinks,water and slim fast and still make good grades. Geez. I would often get dizzy and see stars from being so empty. Luckily I healed physically but I still have issues mentally with food. I think we should just tell people they look wonderful,great,beautiful,lovely etc but never comment on their bodies. Good or bad.

With regards to the discussion stating that 'the mother is terrible/a bad mother' etc; I mostly just feel sorry for her, and I think she's a great mum. She's so terrified, and like so many parents in this situation she hasn't got a clue what to do. There needs to be more support for carers in this position. I can say from experience, heavy handed treatment like from the father isn't always the best course of action. After being forced into treatment and into hospital myself actually made me much worse. The people who have been most supporting for me are those who are patient, who don't force me to get tubed and don't get all shouty and hysterical if they hear me purging. The gentle, slower support is dangerous, of course. But so is having an eating disorder. Personally while the extreme reactions may be a short-term fix, the mothers attitude and support would be more affective in having a long term, positive effect on a more sustainable recovery. Also this is just my personal opinion, as I say just from my personal experience. Treatments for eating disorders are super complex and what is very effective for one person may do nothing, or may be disastrous for another. :) My best wishes to all those out there struggling with similar disorders. There is an end to it, I promise.

I had a friend who was much taller than all of us and she was a little big, the boys constantly made fun of her, I got into some fights with the boys over her and surprisingly I didnt get in trouble when I got home. Then they moved two hours away, it was a few months before they came to visit and she looked so scary! She went from a cool friend that we did everything together to a little stick that was too sick to do anything. She had to go through intensive care for a while and then my other friend and I went to spend summer break with her. We stayed with her mom when she went to her group meetings. It was horrible, she smelled bad like I cant even explain, and she looked worse than a cancer patient. She finally got it under control and is a beautiful mother now with a great career! Sadly I have had more friends than her to get this disease and I still cant understand it, because they truly believe they are fat as they are looking at their bones! It is very sad to watch someone you know slowly kill their self to be what they think is beautiful

When Lexi first got admitted into the program and her nutritionist told her to step backwards on the scale, I literally got flashbacks from my summer at PHP. I liked how at the end of the movie, Lexi and her nutritionist grew a connection with one another. My therapist, dietitian, and dietetic all were such amazing people and made my time at the program actually enjoyable. Though when I got discharged, my parents sort of neglected the fact my ED didn't just completely go away. My mom didn't do any of the paperwork to get me into outpatient with my therapist and nutritionist. It hurts to say that I've completely relapsed, and I'm scared it's even worse this time because it's not about my body this time, but just about having a sense of control. I really resonated with Lexi when she started to grow a healthy relationship with food and cooking, but a traumatic event that didn't even involve her eating majorly set her back. Eating disorders are not just about food or your body. It's a psychological illness that eats you alive. It makes you feel angry. Sad. Euphoric. Isolated. It is just like any other addiction, and I don't think people understand that. No matter how bad an eating disorder is gruesomely portrayed, people seek comfort in that because it's what they know. BUT GOD I WISH MY MOTHER WAS LIKE THIS

I had this. I still struggle. I had to get help as well. What people see & you see are two different things. This movie is on point completely. I weigh more then I want to now but I got so sick when I was had/have anorexia. I've came a long way for sure. I still go through fazes where I wanna lose a lot of weight but ill do it the right way this time. Thank you for the upload! ❤
