I've officially gone vertical! The Eastonmade Ultra has been a great horizontal wood splitter and changed the way I split firewood but the time has come to see what the buzz is all about with these vertical wood splitters. The Eastonmade Axis with attached conveyor has been on my radar since the first time I saw it in person. Now it's landed here at my woodyard and will be changing up the way I think about firewood production. Time to give this wood splitter a thorough workout as I check out what makes this thing tick. Glad you're all along for the ride! Here we go!

Hi Sandy. A great and thorough review of the Eastonmade Axis. I’m really enjoying my Eastonmade 22-28 splitter with box wedge and attached conveyor… like you, I’m really impressed with the stout construction of the Eastonmade splitters. You will love the conveyor and how it eliminates a touch in the splitting process.

I just found your channel. I live 80 miles from the Paul Bunyon show. For 40 years it was held at Hocking College, which is where I went to school and ended up retiring from there. It was a sad day when our new president let it get away. I watch several firewood channels each day. I used to cut a lot of wood, but I am in my 70's and still cut but not near as much. I was at the Bunyon this year and met several KZbinrs. I ran 2 rounds through the axis at Bunyon. I would have to use it more before I would purchase one. I am sure there would be a learning curve to get comfortable with it. I have done it the other way for so long.

Hello Mr. Sandy, I hope this new splitter will work with the log deck and splitting right into the totes, placement of the new one under the roof will require you to split to the other side bay, may not be a lot faster, but you will save effort, and that is a big plus

Hi Sandy, take your new log splitter and place it under the main roof such that when you are operating it, you are looking into the structure. This means the totes will be on the opposite side (left). Then take the log deck and turn it 90 degrees (same in metric 😄). This means you will make a quarter turn to your right to cut logs. I would make an inclined trough to allow you to cut your sections, then lower them to the trough and slide them down to the log splitter loader. You could line the trough with those Toboggan Flying Carpet (18" x 36") @ $7.05 found via Zoro. You would have plenty of room on the far right for loading logs onto the log deck. That type of setup would reduce your effort in rolling log sections to the log splitter. What would be nice is if you could activate in incline chute that would take the log sections from the horizontal log deck cut position to the trough, then slide them down to the log splitter loader. Then there would be no lifting involved and you could do this operation for decades to come, and still find it enjoyable. Looking forward to see what you come up with.

Great suggestions there Robert. Thanks for that. I thought long about some sort of a catch system after I use the chainsaw on the rounds but the main issue that prevented me from making something like that was not being able to cut fully through the round for fear of hitting the chute under the log. May just mean I need to refine the idea though. Thanks for sharing your idea. Great points

I think you’ll like the mod and it’ll work great with the new conveyor. Congrats on the new rig, we love ours. The first time that I saw the Axis, I thought "What a joke". Then I watched it being used and completely changed my mind. I don't see a really efficient way to use it best in the current Chop Shop. My thought would be to build a new shed that is designed to fit the Axis and the log deck with the room for the IBC cages. The lighter rounds can go direct to the Axis table without using the log lift, while the heavy rounds can roll to the ground and be picked up with the log lift. BTW, the HardWorkingMan gave you a mention on his channel recently. He has come up with a new idea on modifying the IBC totes to make it easier to unload. It is impressive that you ask for ideas from your viewers. Some of the channels always act like they already know the best way to do everything. We all know that there are always new and better ideas out there. It's called making progress. Getting ideas from each other make us all better. Thank you

Hi Mike. Thanks for letting me know about the call out. I do see a new shed may be the best idea all around if I can't get things to work out too well with the new Axis. Hi Sandy. That's a great upgrade. It seems that a production line would fit under the shelter. The part I am not sure about is the place where you cut the logs for splitting. If it had a tabletop with gaps and stops for the cutting and perhaps two sections that could be set under the shelter when not in use, you may not need to buy something as others have suggested. Just use what you have. IBC tote on one side, the splitter backed into the middle and the 2-section table on the right side. At any rate, you will have something that makes sense to you. Have good days!

Congrats on the Axis. It is certainly a great splitter and will certainly make any size firewood you want from even the most gnarly of rounds. I am just waiting for Eastonmade to get their 40C processor on the market. They keep tinkering with it and teasing people with videos of the prototype in action. For setup, I would put it where the Ultra was, conveyor to the left and then put the log bucking deck back. So all you have to do is turn around to grab your rounds and place them on the Axis work table. Ideally Eastonmade at some point, would offer the Axis in a mirror image configuration for those people that would prefer a specific orientation due to wood yard constraints or being left handed.

If you can move the splitter by hand, try lining IBC totes in a row. When the first is full, move the splitter down to the next tote (so you don’t have to fire up the tractor just to move one tote at a time). Only downside is then you can’t use your shelter.

Sandy can line 2 totes up, and simply lower/raise the belt to adjust which tote the firewall falls into. Then swap them out with the tractor and repeat with 2 more. With the log table already up at waist high - not sure the lifting table is really useful.

Good Evening Sandy, I really like that splitter, We may get one later next year ourselves if the funds work out. After you put the sawmill in the shed with a little coaxing I believe you will get this in the chop shop without a problem. (if height of the cylinder is a little to much let the air out of the tires to get clearance, you could pull the pin on the conveyor set aside, position then put back on) then you could put the log rack back and not be bending over to move log rounds, Use the log lift as a table and split to you hearts content. One not of caution don't go under the conveyor while its running it will pull you hat off and anything connected to it... Great machine! John Toccoa GA

Color me green! Nice machine brother!!! Congratulations! I would keep the good stuff from your last setup. If the splitter sits 90° off the log deck, you can cut and simply turn to your right to place the rounds on the Axis log lift. I don't know how you'll fit the Axis comfortably in the chop shop... we'll find out on a later episode, im sure 😁👍

The "little kid on Christmas morning face" every time a piece goes up the conveyor...🤣. I do like the Axis, but I got the Timberdevil last week myself. Didn't have the extra 15k for the Axis. The log lift is a game changer and makes for a huge work table when the rounds are a manageable size! Looking forward to seeing how you can integrate the Axis into your production!

hi there they sure make a nice splitter , had a chance to run one for a few hours at the HOPE house , there is a learning curve , one thing to watch out for in the future is the conveyor chain hitting the tire when set at a lower point . now i am different then everyone else so keep that in mind , get rid of the log lift and put in a table or modify it . log lifts take to much time , think on how you are going to get the rounds to the log lift or splitter . just think if you were to cut the rounds on your bench put them rite into a large tractor bucket then moved the tractor bucket on a table at the axis deck height . no picking up or rolling to or basically fetching rounds from the table or woods , this seams to be something everyone is afraid to do but is the best way in most cases , have you seen any of my videos on the table method , all just thoughts you should do what works best for you . john

I would slow that conveyor down as its wearing things the faster it turns. Another thing that I really don't care for is the polished painted surface that you are holding the wood to be split under that blade. Its slick and can allow a piece to kick out and hit you before you know it. A piece of tar paper with the sandy surface to help keep that wood from sliding when splitting it would seem much safer.

Hey Morgan. Hope you've had a nice holiday season. I think with the Axis as long as the round isn't angled really badly when cut with the chainsaw it stays put pretty well from what I've seen so far. Looking forward to getting some miles on this splitter to see all the things I"ve been missing!

I would put the tongue into the center shed with your quad. then you can put IBC on the left instead of the right and return your log deck to it's original positioning. You probably won't need to put the round lift down, since it will be close to a level lift across to the splitter. The biggest Question will be overhead clearance. Might have to ad a shed roof to get out of the sun and snow/rain onto the gable.

Seems to me that your log deck is a lot more important to saving effort than the lift. Still there are probably times when that will be handy. In an ideal setup a conveyor to pickup the rounds when they are cut off the log deck to send them to the splitter would make things a bit easier. Given the configuration of the splitter a possible layout would be to put the splitter in going the same direction as you did before and rotate your log deck 90 degrees with a conveyor or rollers to move the rounds down to the splitter.

Congrats...nice machine. Here's what I've done and what I'd do...set it up, run for awhile, move...set it up again, run for awhile....move and set up again, run. Then once you've done all that...move it again....lol. You might be able to narrow down options and choices of where/how to set it up because of the log lift on one side, and conveyor on the other but don't be afraid of things turning into a game of musical splitter locations around the woodyard! Ha! 😆

Keeping the front of your shed as open as possible . Working off the left side as you are looking into the shed. Conveyor sticking out the left side dropping into toats, that leaves 2 bays open for what ever. Just a quick thought your idea, I'm sure you have it figured out. 😅 👍

Move the Axis to under your shelter so you can operate from under cover . Load the IBC cages to the other side and drop your split wood directly into the totes. Move the log cutting jig to be close to the rounds lift to minimize steps. Good luck!

Hi Sandy. I've always wanted you to have this wood splitter. A simple layout would be, Easton under the roof overhang (if the conveyor height fits) so that split logs are conveyed to the left (instead of existing right). Log deck in front. Then IBC's on rails (somewhat below grade) for an assembly line. 😂 You may have to extend the roof out to cover the Easton, though not the conveyor. Who you gonna sell all this firewood to? 😃

Only an off the cuff idea all things considered. A ramp down from your log deck to the axis lifter should hopefully help transfer the cut rounds.
