Just some notes about the NPC ships in Private Servers:
They are, as of the time of this writing, 100% accurate.
They aim for that box inside the ship. If you've noticed, they aim precisely in one location
They can be bowlocked
Only the Captain's ship (or the ship that initiated the mission) can damage these ships
Other ships, those that are not the captain's, can take damage if they are hit by the NPC ships
They do not use swivels
They are empty hence unboardable
They wont fire unless the ship is within line of sight of the cannons
If you're too close, like grinding hulls kind of close, NPC ships are unable to fire. (So far tested with an NPC alliance using a tyrant)
They cannot be disarmed
