We ran out of time to buy a birthday cake for my mother-in-law, so I bought the most beautiful chocolate cake Publix sold. We knew it would be store bought but it was beautiful. Well, it was the best cake we ever had. Nine family birthdays across three years with us buying this cake. So glad to hear grocery stores have finally realized they can sell better cakes!

I've been to 3 weddings where they had Publix cakes as the wedding cake and grooms cake. Absolutely delicious. Whenever I'm down south I always make sure to go get some Publix cake.

It's so disappointing where there's clearly some "bottom line" conversation that happens and all the baked goods at a grocery store go down the shitter. There was the most delicious cake slices, for $2! at this grocery store in Louisville, KY, and then they started making dry cakes with terrible waxy frosting, charging $4-5/slice. And then Kroger has totally garbage baked goods across the board. HyVee has tremendously good baked goods, though. I travel a lot, and I make sure I get into grocery stores and sample their goods! ha.

I was married in the 90s. I had the most gorgeous wedding cake from Albertson's bakery. I asked for a white cake with almond extract which is the New Orleans flavor of wedding cakes. Raspberry filling with white chocolate frosting. My florist put fresh flowers on the cake. I had to go with the grocery bakery because we were married at a country estate and they were the only one who would deliver. You would not believe how AMAZING it was. Did not even order a tasting or anything and it came out like I paid a fortune. Don't sleep on grocery bakeries. If you choose a good flavor combo you can get something special. I would highly suggest a tasting, though!!!

As someone who grew up in Miami, yes Publix cakes are our standard. And now their decorated "fancy" cakes are as beautiful as ones from a specialty bakery. I even ordered three of my daughter's birthday cakes from Publix, and everyone kept asking (and were surprised) when I told them Publix.

I am a TJs crew member so watching this is such an out of body meta experience right now lol. Our managers crew off (make a "tester") this cake for birthdays and around holidays. Its ony of my favs. One fun tip is making it a pseudo tres leches by putting it into another container with some sweet condensed milk and cream as a thin layer at the bottom. Absolute game changer

These remind me of the Sara Lee cakes from the 1970s, before everything became artificial. They were so dense and lush and inexpensive. If Trader Joe’s came out with a Sara Lee style banana sheet cake, I would be in heaven.

Got one of each while visiting my in-laws. Both were very popular. We voted chocolate to be the winner, but we finished both at almost exactly the same time, so I’d say it was pretty close! I wouldn’t necessarily say they’re “last meal good,” and the presentation is a bit lackluster, but they’re delicious cakes at a nice and modest size for $5. The frostings, though thick, are quite a bit less sweet and more flavorful than usual, and I agree that this is what makes it stand out (in a good way).

You’re not alone, I am not fond of thick frosting, either, it’s so sweet and thick I can only get through one slice of cake, cupcake, brownie, name it. In fact, if I ever get a craving for cake, I’d only really go for a cannoli cake since they don’t typically use thick frosting with those.

As soon as I saw this video, I went to Trader Joe's and got 2 chocolate and 2 vanilla cakes for my son's birthday gathering. Yeah I agree, it's normally the frosting that ruins a cake for me but not always. I hate that whip cream like frosting, but a lot of store bought cakes don't specify what you're getting. Buttercream? Whipped frosting? It's always a dilemma for me buying premade cakes. Hopefully I can get one of these someday. I don't think we have a Trader Joe's in my area as of now.

I love buttercream icing, and these cakes. The icing on them is very generous, but misses some of the cake. So I take an offset spatula and spread that luscious icing to every nth of the cake’s surface. So good! Unfortunately, we recently moved to a town where the nearest TJ’s is a one-hour drive for us. Stacked bday cake! This is my fav hack for bday cakes, I also love baking for my families bday but my 6yo son is super picky and over the years has barely touched his cakes so these days I spend more time in the decorating which he always loves to see and for my hubby’s recent bday we had our 4 day old baby to look after so I again opted to decorate a few stacked store bought cakes and it turned out so stunning 🤩 my fav type of cake to buy is white chocolate mudcake bc it’s like a super moist vanilla cake and everyone seems to enjoy, win win ❤

I discovered the vanilla bean cake years ago and fell in love! I’ve been telling everyone I know all about it since I found it and everyone loves it! There’s definitely too much frosting, but if you scrape some off you can dip strawberries in it (or even swoop them across the top of your slice of cake!)🙈😂

You nailed it when you said the butter cream actually tastes like butter. I agree that the frosting is a little too much but i never throw it away. We’ve dipped strawberry in them and bought some thin vanilla cookies (also from trader joes) made a sandwich.

I bought this cake after watching this and seeing everyone hype it up. My partner and I sadly aren't fans. The cake itself takes like any vanilla box cake, and the frosting is too dense and pure sweet for me. Not bad, but we haven't finished it and it has been days. I do think those who don't have a TJs near them could just make a box yellow cake and basic buttercream and it'd be similar. I'll have to try the chocolate one.

I was incredibly sick while pregnant and couldn't eat for months. I had a relative pick up one of these for me and I kept it in my freezer for almost six months until I could eat it and I made it one of my first meals once I could eat again. Also, if you're in the southeast, Publix makes a phenomenal Chantilly cake with buttercream & fresh fruit I had it for the first time last year during a celebration for my mom, and as far as store-bought cakes go, its definitely the best I ever had! The icing to cake ratio is very off here on this cake. I'm thinking if you scooped half the icing off you could make layers and frost the sides with the scooped off top layer!

@@therealJamieJoy nooo, it's perfect! 1/3 frosting to cake ratio is ideal. And this would be frosting, not icing, unless there's some kind of regional or international differences? Icing is like the thin hard sugar-water topping on cookies, at least in my neck of the woods. Frosting is thick and always soft.

Yes, I know the difference but in the South frosting, icing, ganache is all called icing --and icing is called a glaze. Home cooks say "ice the cake." @@milkbarMPLS Doesn't mean put it in the freezer heehee. This cake looked more like 50/50 to me.

trader joe’s gluten free coffee cake muffins are absolutely delicious too! I don’t have a gluten sensitivity but they are great

I think a couple years they made a pumpkin version with a chai cream cheese frosting. Not sure if they were made by the same companies but they were similar. Haven’t seen it recently. I’d love if they brought that back.
