My grandma used to sing this at night and in the kitchen when she cooked. She passed recently after a long battle with cancer. I feel like this song accurately depicts her in life and death and I feel that every time I hear this song she's telling me not to cry over her death,

My nana did the same thing. when i was little, she would sing "oh susanna, don't you cry for nana" and after she died recently (cancer) this was all i could think. and now i'm sobbing. great.

I can't believe this, I'm 60 years old, and just yesterday I got this song stuck in my head but there was something about the lyrics that was messed up. I kept thinking it went "it rained all night the day I left, the weather it was dry" and as I watch the lyrics, I see that isn't the only contradiction in the song. It's hilarious. I know we had to sing this in school like 50+ years ago and I'd never given it a thought until yesterday. Now I'm wondering if somebody is trying to tell me something like.....maybe I'm going to die soon....I guess ya never know. I hope I can get it out of my head now.

I used to listen to my younger sisters singing this song in their elementary school days in the late 70 ties.. When I became a teacher, I taught this song to my students in English class back in 1992 and last year one of the students reminded me about the significance of his song to him. English was something alien and new to him and he told me that he really enjoyed this song which opened his interest to English language.

How weird that Mrs. Susan Davis would be called "Teacher Susan" in the modern day. There go the last vestiges of respect for authority.

I had heard this song for the very first time in 1989 in the Hindi movie Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, I liked it a lot at that time, the melody, although I didn't understand the words very well, nor did I know what song it was, I lived in India back then. For all these years, I didn't know anything about this song, but remembered the melody. Today, I went back and re-saw the clip from that movie where the the group of college students in India sing this song and dance to it, in that movie. Feel very thrilled to have finally found it !!!

Funny thing is, I played an arcade game called Tapper, I think some of you know the game because it was featured in Wreck It Ralph. Anyway in the first 2 levels this is the background song.
