Gabe takes a nice 8pt with his long bow that he's had on trailcams. The bow is a Two Tracks Ogemaw hybrid flat bow, 54", 54lbs. Arrows are Black Eagle X Impact 400's with a Valkyrie Jagger centerpin 300 grain broadhead.

Great video, great buck. Were you able to eat the meat? How cold was it that night? While it is correct to give them extra time on a questionable hit, on the other hand, if it isn't below 40, I"m always concerned about leaving them overnight and having the meat spoil. What are your thoughts?
@FullQuiverOutdoors
@FullQuiverOutdoors 5 жыл бұрын
Bham67, there’s lots that goes into that question. Temps at night are indeed a concern. But, so is jumping a deer you know is still alive in the dark when you won’t be able to see where it goes. The amount of coyotes in your area can also be a big concern. Yes, the meat was still good and we ate it as all the deer we take. I always err on the side of not jumping a deer at night. When in doubt, back out is the saying. If it’s warm, then we consider that and may go in during the night or early morning. If that is the case, when we find the deer we quarter and debone the meat and get it into cold storage right away.

What technique do you use shooting the recurve? I’m trying to get instinct down, but it’s pretty challenging. I missed a chip shot, 20 yards at a doe. That’s a super nice buck
@FullQuiverOutdoors
@FullQuiverOutdoors Жыл бұрын
I'm shooting instinctive. I'm sure I see the broadhead in the corner of my eye so it probably comes into play subconsciously but I'm not aiming in any way. I don't take long shots and have had my fair share of misses too. I just enjoy the purity and challenge of shooting instinctive. Don't give up!

It's a great way to access land quickly, quietly and scent free, that's for sure. Check you regulations and be sure they allow motorized vehicles. Many places do not. I use the electric motor when I can and leave the battery behind and use it like a regular bike the rest of the time. Rambo also makes just regular fat tire bikes which are also very nice. I wasn't sure I'd use one much when I got one but I've found it's an excellent tool!

I can't get used to this modern way of hunting, electric bike, cell phones, trail cams, your own private place to hunt prime deer, maybe it is a rich man's resort, I have to walk a mile and a half to reach my hunting spot and yes I hunt with a recurve bow, hunting old school, without the trail cams and all the other toys, stalking and finding the deer , Now that is real hunting to me.
@FullQuiverOutdoors
@FullQuiverOutdoors 5 жыл бұрын
Cliff Brown, to each his own. When I have the opportunity to hunt private land, I will. I get tired of working my butt off on public only to have another hunter come walking through. I love stalking deer too but there’s very little opportunity to in mid-Michigan where I hunt. I usually get to do that in the corn fields. There are so many hunters in our state that it’s very tough to hunt public when I’m trying to find and hunt a big buck. We do a lot of public land hunting in other states. Trailcameras are just like trapping to me. I enjoy seeing the bucks I have a chance to hunt. It has saved many a buck’s life when I had a bigger buck I was hunting. To me, it’s tough to find the biggest couple of bucks around and only hunt them. That’s very enjoyable to me. That’s just my opinion though.

Ryan Thomas, you can usually find sales on them for under $2k. They are fairly expensive but if you have access issues, they are a life saver. Ryan Thomas, oh yeah. I know guys more towards 300 that are using them. Just need to adjust the air in the tires appropriately for the rider. Fat bikes have definitely changed how I hunt for the better. And with kids, it’s a lot easier to get in and out of the woods quicker to get to events they are having. First of all, mother nature is far more cruel, such as coyotes eating the deer alive or it starving to death which both can take days (or way longer for starvation). What we do is strive to take a clean, ethical shot to quickly kill the animal and utilize its meat. We hunt in varying situations and once in a great while a bad shot is made. In this instance, we exhaust our resources in trying to find and recover the deer. In this situation, I knew the animal would not be dead right away so any attempt to recover it that night would've almost surely resulted in the buck running off (we cannot shoot it legally at night) and suffering longer and possibly not recovering the animal. The wise decision is to wait until morning when we can see further and possibly spot the buck, finish it off if needed and recover it. The far more irresponsible thing to do in this situation was to go after it immediately. If you don't know anything about hunting or the situation involved, maybe you shouldn't make comments like this that sound ridiculous to responsible hunters. As you can see from the video, I had a long, sleepless night worrying about the animal suffering. That is never the intention of hunters like us.

Will Rogers, thankfully it was a one lung shot. The arrow passed through in front of the diaphragm so no problems at all. We ate the deer just like all of the ones we take.

What a joke, this isn't hunting. Hunting involves tracking and stalking and closing the distance on foot for the shot. You would never catch Fred Bear in a tree stand.

BennyCFD, Fred Bear wasn’t the only hunter in history. Treestands are a fairly new invention. Just having a treestand doesn’t insure your success. Just because I’m in a treestand doesn’t mean that I haven’t “hunted”. I’ve put in many hours putting in food plots, creating habitat, cutting to help move deer, etc. Deer hunting has changed from the old days where you had huge blocks of acreage that you had access to till now when it’s tough to find a 40 acre parcel to hunt. Hunting has always evolved with access and technology. Just because it’s different doesn’t make it not hunting.

Fred Bear did hunt from wood platforms built up in the trees. It’s well documented that he did so all over the world.
