The chimney sweep I have is self-employed with his own van and equipment. He cleans my chimney once a year and he is fully booked with customers the whole year through. It takes him an hour to clean the chimney but he says that some chimneys take longer to clean. He charges 50 UK pounds per hour but prices in London can be up to 90 UK pounds per hour. He's been doing this job for 35 years and cleans four chimneys per day. That's 200 pounds per day in his hand, 1000 pounds for a five day week. That's an income of around 50,000 pounds per year. My son goes to college to get academic qualifications so that he can get a so-called good job, but I doubt that he'll ever achieve the high income of a chimney sweep. He's now considering quitting college and becoming a chimney sweep.

Yes more young people in our industry would be fabulous! There is no formal college linked apprenticeship scheme (as yet) but we would like it; there is an NVQ and there are plenty of skills to learn, as sweeping is quite a technical business across the board. The industry is the front line in chimney fire and (chimney related) carbon monoxide poisoning, and with the myriad of different appliances requiring a technical knowledge to take apart, inspect and check annually, all done without making a speck of dust, it is quite challenging! It may be worth steering your son to any of the local registered chimney sweeps, I would suggest HETAS approved ones too, for advice. Note however, that I charge similar fees to your example, it has taken me 10 years to get to a full book, with many lean years before this meaning an irregular, seasonal income, and, once expenses of running the business, equipment maintenance, training, vehicle running costs and disposables costs are taken into account, take the 50k and reduce that by a third, and then of course 20% income tax on the remainder provides a more realistic figure, and of course reduce your calculation to include time off where you don't get paid, no payment either when you are sick. Additionally, time spent in the admin of running the business, kit cleaning and prep daily, booking calls, managing maybe 20 calls a day in the busy months, all makes a working day 10-12 hours sometimes.Oh and I should also mention the evenings spent with ice packs on the knees, and aching joints and the fact you work alone with your own wits to keep you sane! Tell him if this appeals, go for it!

Minus the cost of insurance, equipment, depreciation on the van and petrol and running costs, holidays etc. Money's not everything if you find the work uncreative and repetitive and it doesn't feed your soul. I knew a carpet fitter who was working all the hours god sent and was grossing £100k a year, but his knees were knackered by his late thirties and he couldn't wait to give it up to be a professional folk musician

Where abouts are you Frank? I'm surprised you've nobody trustworthy nearby (we do love our fires lol) but I'd be happy to ask any of my friends in your area who they use (I'm in Louth but I know people everywhere thanks to competitive archery 😁) I've just bought me own rods, can't afford to be paying the fire brigade again 😂 👍. I do my own every two years or so. I do it fred dibnah style by going on the roof and dropping a line down. Important to get it done but like most things these days it a safety over kill with every 12 months and certificates etc, but i suppose if there ever is a problem your backed up insurance wise. I don't mind taking the very small risk though.
