Traditional Capuchins of Morgon

A glimpse of the life of the "Capuchins of Traditional Observance" in Morgon, France

The friary was founded at Morgon in 1983 by Fr. Eugene de Villeurbanne, a Capuchin priest who wanted to preserve the austere traditional Franciscan life amidst the decadence of the 20th century.
Holy Mass in the True Roman Rite.
The Divine office is recited night and day.
Meditation twice a day.
Litanies, Daily Rosary, and other prayers.
The priests provide spiritual direction for many faithful, preach missions in other parishes, teach catechism in some schools.
The lay-brothers have many different jobs assisting the priests.
A contemplative life while at the same time, missionary.
"Seek ye therefore first the kingdom of God, and his justice, and all these things shall be added unto you."
Keeping with the vow of total poverty, the friars depend solely on donations of food and necessities. They've made it 40 years! (and the franciscan order has survived for 800 years)

Fr. Eugene de Villeurbanne was ostracized within his order for sticking to the traditional Capuchin constitutions, to which he vowed obedience when he became a friar in 1919.
He lived as a hermit for some years, but young men kept coming to him, desiring to live the traditional franciscan life. He took this as a sign from heaven.
He was eventually expelled from the revolutionizing Capuchin order for training young men to become traditional capuchin friars.
When Fr. Eugene was "suspended" in 1983, Archbishop Lefebvre threw his arm around him and said "now we are brothers!"
Church Authorities have not canonically recognized the Capuchins of Traditional Observance.
The friars acknowledge Pope Francis and prays for him.
Some priestly candidates are taught in the FSSPX seminary of Econe, and others are taught in-house, while still living under their rule.
Friars come from all over the world: France, Switzerland, Poland, Czechia, Spain, Argentina, Australia, South Africa, ...etc.
The monastery has 2 other foundations in France, one is the novitiate. For a total of about 40 friars.
An order of Capuchin poor Clares nearby is also tended by the priests, there are at least a dozen sisters there.
All the friars seem to be simple, humble, joyful religious. They've made the sacrifice of their lives and futures for the glory of God and the salvation of souls. By their prayers and penance, they are quietly raining down graces upon the whole earth.

I know these Capuchins have been at this location in France foe decades.Is there any hope of opening houses in the USA,Ireland,Italy and other places?

They need more vocations. At least five or six friars to start a new foundation. There are about 20 at this mother house, 9 or 10 at the noviciate house and seven at another foundation in France.

It was originally a farm house attached to the surrounding vineyards I believe. The chapel with a low oval ceiling is the original wine cellar.

The Franciscan life is dedicated to the poor. I don't understand why these monks are secluded and claim to be Franciscans be a proper monk if you want but the Franciscan life is seriously active WITH THE POOR

Dear friend, I hope you (and anyone else with doubts) would write a letter to the friars at Morgon, and hear back yourself about their life and work. The video shows merely the interior community and some parish life, not the apostolic work of the friars. The order is composed of mostly priests, who by the nature of their vocation have care of the spiritual needs of the laity. The priests there are almost overextended in their apostolate amongst the faithful. Some have occasionally travelled to the Middle-East to provide support to the overwhelmed clergy there. Nevertheless the rule of Saint Francis, which is very adaptable in-itself (countless variances of cloistered and active orders through these 800 years, male and female), and the pre-1970 Capuchin Constitutions are followed strictly, as they have been for nearly 500 years. These older constitutions can easily be found online, for a more comprehensive view of the life and franciscan spirit, along with very many commentaries available. Helping the materially impoverished is certainly a work of mercy. During my stay there, I saw brothers frequently helping the poor and needy at the door. The friary is located close to Lyon, where there are very many homeless and refugees that come through. Yet higher are the spiritual works of mercy, instruct the ignorant, etc... and also providing the sacramental life to very many faithful. The Capuchin Franciscans have always been a preaching order. A kind of missionary-monk. (Hope this helps, though it might be vain to expect a thorough answer in a youtube comment about a tiny religious community, which few have observed.) Pax et Bonum!
