Have you ever been cored up in cold weather, freezing your hand while waiting for a Bus or Train sitting on a bench or elsewhere?
Well there is a solution for that, namely a cheap old style charcoal Pocket-stove puts an end to it with getting cold and stiff fingers.
Just lighten up a Charcoal stick and stuff it into your pockets to keep you warm and comfortable, specially if you're wearing only a jacket or coat that is not quite up for freezing conditions.

I just found my grandpa's pocket handwarmer like this while cleaning his home. I picked it up having no idea what it was and Google led me here. Thanks for sharing this little piece of history makes me feel closer to him.

Glad my video could help to clear the mist up a bit ;-) Keep your grandpa's hand warmer as a personal treasure token, something to hold on to and may even make use of it while remembering the good old times.

Wow, the videos are coming thick and fast at the moment! I haven't had a chance yet to comment on the others yet, or even to watch this one, but I will as soon as I can. This video sounds like an intriguing idea, I can't wait to see it.

@@spookycrow1 Yes, I think I'll have to get one. I wonder how well sticks of home-made charcoal would fare in it.

@@adrianhyde You will not regret it to get this little tin case👍 not for this low prize tag anyway. Gives some more additional option for on the trail or in the woods. Was wondering how good a normal charred amber stick would hold up, since this charcoal sticks are very clean, compressed, and pure. But well any homemade charcoal should work the same way, I guess as long it can smoulder without making any steam. On the other hand, a pack of this fabricated charcoal that is made to fit the Pocket stove perfectly is quite cheap to fetch and cost around €2 to €3 quit the box with 12 sticks in it. Well, give it a try and let me know how it works with your homemade charcoal, sounds like a very interesting approach, and the result could become in handy on the move if it works as intended.

@@spookycrow1 Hi, hope you're well. I now have a couple of these pocket stoves and have been trying them out, and am impressed with how well they work. I still haven't got round to any trials of home-made charcoal but I'll get round to it soon, I'm sure! I'm looking forward to another video from you, it seems a while since the last one, but you'll get round to it soon, I'm sure! Take care and bye for now. 🌳🌲🌿🌄🌨🎵🎶💚❇

Yeah absolutely ;-) Actually, with the dual use in mind, I thought about some further use to it, regarding for bushcraft needs... this very convenient tin cover enables to carry some pre lit charcoal amber to be carried from one place to another or changing the campsite over the day and still having some hot burning amber in the pocket to start another fire elsewhere at the new camp site too.

The heat level of these classic charcoal hand warmers can also be controlled. With the warmer lid closed, just put your lips on the end of the warmer that you lit and blow hard into the end of the clam lid, forcing oxygen into the chamer. This can either ensure they do not self-extinguish, or blow every 5-10 minutes to increase the heat output (which will obviously decrease the duration of the burn. Super nice little warmers.. although they're becoming increasingly difficult to find.. probably due to the green-climate people who don't understand that these are charcoal powered (wood), not coal.

Thanks for your additional infos, was not aware about that it is possible to rise the heat of the charcoal hand warmer in that way, which sounds logical and would definitely at the beginning speed up the time to good heat out of it. You're mentioning that it is hard to get by of this simple hand warmer.. well I think there are several reasons for that, 1st of all, the winter over the last few decades were quite warm for a start, at least here in Europe, and then it's because the market is flooded with this high-tech electric hand warmer, which are more profitable than the classic and long proven ones and people believe this is the only way and supposable cleaner too, but the electrical hand warmer are not cleaner for environment at all if consider what it takes to manufacture them for a start, not to mention on the additional power source that is behind it, just to charge this up and keep this running. So in generally hunters are the more traditional minded people, like keep it simple, and it works, at least the older generation, and therefore the cheap and simple to run charcoal hand warmer are still around and in favour over the modern lifestyle electrical variation. On top of all that, yes the classic charcoal hand warmer can be stored in the winter pack or a remote cabin for ages without them going off or out of function because there is no battery that or electric is needed, or for the benzine fuel related hand warmer running dry. The charcoal hand warmer, a cheap and cheerful piece of equipment to have round if required, one of the best items, well worth it.... talking about the naive green-climat fanatics... yeah what do they know... definitely not a lot on how to cope on a low footprint... ;-P

Hey, I use a charcoal hand warmer, but it keeps going out and think it's clogged. Does anyone have any tips on how to clean it please? Thank you!

Well depending on how much use you may make of this handwarmer.. Sounds like the leftover ashes clogging up the fibre mesh... in that case, I would try a hoover to suck out the dust out to free the ventilation holes. The other reason would be bad charcoal, may this is to damp for some reason ? Not much else I could think of to keep your charcoal handwarmer in good order, hope that helps. At the beginning, once you lighten the charcoal stick up and closed the lid, you may gently blow in to the holes on the long end to get it going, as some other comentor suggested, some extra air always feeding the glow of the charcoal. Just keep in mind that it will take some time until the handwarmer can develop notable heat, definitely not in an instant.
