In this video, we taste test Traditional Czech food & explore the famous Easter Markets in the Old Town of Prague. We are bit a surprised by the food...is that a good thing or not?? You'll have to watch to find out ;).
Prague is the capital city of the Czech Republic. It's known for its Old Town Square, the heart of its historic core, with colorful baroque buildings, Gothic churches and the medieval Astronomical Clock. It's one of our favorite European cities and an absolute must-see destination!

Finally some tourist vloggers who are grateful for the work of Honest Guide! :) I often watch videos of foreigners visiting Prague. I like to watch their reactions to our Czech food, which I love. And finally I see someone who knows that trdelník is a tourist trap and instead enjoys classic Czech cuisine. Have a nice stay here!

Sorry to burst your bubble, but that Větrník (wind wheel?)dessert does not have maple glaze. It's caramel. I wouldn't go as far as saying that we never put maple glaze on anything, because you will find puff pastry items with pecan and maple filling in supermarkets, but it's is extremely rare. But we generally don't use maple syrup. It started to appear in supermarkets only about 20-25 years ago. And honestly I think Czechs only buy it when they look up an recipe of North American origin and need it for that. Then they buy it and use it once or twice and then it sits in the pantry for years until someone throws it out, because it expired years ago. We use it extremely rarely and don't really know what to use it for.

After Italian food, I would probably count the Czech/Bohemian cuisine directly on the same level as our German, so incredibly delicious, but also very substantial! I Love it.

Love Czech food. I live in central Texas close to Praha, Texas. So heavy Czech influence! Grew up eating "TexCzech" food. The fruit filled pastry was a kolache and oh are they one of my favorites! I'm coming to Germany late June on mission for a baseball camp and am so looking forward to the German culture.

What is fascinating to me is that the Texas czechs are calling the 'donut'ish pastry kolache, koláč is typically flat pastry with visible filling in the middle like a little plate of pastry. This would be more of a Buchta, round ish pastry with filling inside. I guess the generations away changed some meanings.

@@kcim123 the really crazy thing is that the Asian community (along with city folks) are calling pigs in the blankets kolaches 😩.... I know the Czech name just can't spell it 😂. The only foreign language offered when I was in high school was Czech! Still remember a few key phrases.

@@kcim123 What is fascinating to me is how they don't recognize any food. When they see something unfamiliar, they think it's one of the few dishes they know, but made differently. I've experienced that many times. It doesn't even occur to them that it's something else and then they ask, "why aren't the kolache my grandmother used to make round" hell, because they're not kolache, but other pastries that look different, taste different and have a different name. Recently, a KZbinr from the USA made a video about the difference between pizza in the USA and in Prague. The Prague pizza was a Hungarian langos. 🙄🙄🙄

The 'sirloin' with cream sause aka Svíčková (svíčková is literally the name for the Tenderloin meat cut) is literally the most traditional czech food in my opinion. Made with root vegetables, cream, tenderloin beef (or other beef and sometimes even rabbit meat) and with the cranberry and whipped cream topping. Perfect.

I must have in been in Prague about the same time a you guys! I went to the Cafe Imperial, and had the Svičková. The chef is called Zdenek Pohlreich, and he’s a sort of Czech Gordon Ramsey! Anyway the food was awesome, and not too expensive. Savoy Cake at Cafe Savoy was wonderful. The Tafelspitz at the Slavia Cafe was amazing, and no one should leave Prague without trying the Grand Orient Cafe where I had virus cake. The only bad thing about Prague is that there are sooooo many tourists, but I guess that’s what happens when a place is so good. Btw, congrats on the new arrival, and glad that you’re back on the move!

When you are talking about prizing you aught to be aware of the fact that the you were smack down in the middle of the most tourist oriented (and thereby the most expensive) part of Prague and in all of the Czech Republic. A few streets over you would probably get the same food for a fraction of that prize. The cafe in front of the clock tower is probably the most expensive place in town and have 3 times the prizes of a restaurant two blocks away from the square.

Oh we know we were right in the middle of the tourist hot spots. We felt like the restaurants prices weren’t too high, but the Easter markets definitely were like we mentioned. Thanks for sharing :) always good knowledge for those first traveling to Prague!

@@OurStorytoTell We'll go to Prague again this summer for our tenth time or so (I am Swedish). My wife is from the Czech Republic and I am a great lover of Czech (and German) Beer. We mostly keep away from the tourist traps and always get great food, great beer and much interesting things to see and experience and all of this at a very reasonable prize. The last year the prizes have gone up quite a bit tough, so I am not sure if we will find it as affordable this time. But at least we know that we will have a good time.

The Chimney Cakes are a traditional Hungarian food and are typically served without anything stuffed inside and with a simple cinnamon and sugar coating. I think it tastes best that way, too. Stuffing them is touristy.

I think that Prague is beautiful. Luckily, so did Hitler. This meant that the German Army was not allowed to bomb it. Even the Jewish Quarter was left alone, as a "Living Museum" (a courtesy unfortunately not extended to the Jews themselves). However, all of Prague's magnificent architecture was left standing. And so, it remains as it was built, back in the Late Middle Ages thru the late 19th Century.

Glad you're doing well. Well there is no wrong weather just wrong clothing after all. They do have amazing bread and chances are the smokey tasting chicken skin is Paprika rub in some way, it's such an easy flavor trick once you know it. My mom even uses it to replace onions, we used it for curry ketchup when we didn't have onions and put some in our breading, we barely eat anything savory without Paprika in some form. There's a non spicy version too. Savory cream is amazing, so are those Knödel. And I think I got my first celtic cross at a market in that place, maybe even the booth.

If U want to have pork knuckle in Prague then go to Pork's in Mostecká street - there is no better pork knuckle in WHOLE THE WORLD...! It is crunchy, juicy and well done (one portion for two people is quite enough) - order extra cabbage, and potato chips with chilly mayo as appetiser before meal. And of course Pilsner Urquell (or Kozel if U like sweeter beer). But frankly anything else U have there is extremely good (e.g. pork ribs). The only drawback is that it is most touristy street thus better make a reservation otherwise U shall be queing for at least 30 mins (in busy hours)... ;)

Of course, the food in Europe is quite similar this is because peoples within Europe have migrated and spread their food, ergo you can find the same dishes just under a different name. Some dishes are then also adapted to the respective population that has assimilated them.

It's great to see you back on the road and trying some delicious local foods. I was surprised at just how much older Noa already looks as she peered up from her cosy carrier. She is in for a treat, as Willa has been, to try new tastes as soon as she is old enough. So strange that Willa at one point chose a slice of dry bread to eat! At the market I noticed that English was evident on a lot of menus and placards, but how was it conversing with the stallholders to find out what the particular speciality was? When I think of Prague, I immediately think of bohemian cuisine and fairy tale films. I'm a big fan of bohemian cuisine but I think some dishes need to be eaten more often to be loved, such as Bryndzove Halushky (love it). The fairy tale films are the best anyway, like "3 Haselnüsse für Aschenbrödel" or "Frau Holle".

The ONLY traditional Trdelnik is from Skalica, Slovakia. Officially registerred as European protected origin of food. But yes, Czech food is great, just great, rich, very satisfying and pure - like if cooked at home. Everyone should try it.

Prague is Europe. Already the common history with Austria. Common history with Slovakia. The Czechs drink more beer than the Germans because they invented the Pilsener beer. Pilz beer is very popular in Germany.

Pilsner beer was invented by a Bavarian brewer living in Pilsen at the time. Pils is written with s not z. Btw. 150 years ago 60% of the inhabitants of Praque spoke German as their mother tongue, 40% Czech. And it was considered the "best standard German" at the time. Today they say Hannover has the best German. ( I persoally doubt it . )

The food you buy on the market for tourists is not traditional Czech food. In no country they would sell traditional food on fake tourist- trap places. What you buy there is a parody suitable for no brainers to take selfies with. And: traditional food almost does not exist. Maybe if you go somewhere far into the country and find an old lady living there. Or visit a museum and they have a local cuisine day there. Otherwise, what we eat now is a modern version of food that has been for some time more or less eaten in the area. Traditional food is just an empty term used to look like a snob (or an idiot). Or get a catch title for your video.
