Uzbekistan Day 6: Food and Attractions Tour of Khiva + Unforgettable Family Meal!
Khiva is another ancient city of Uzbekistan, known for its mud walled city. It’s another great city to explore for a combination of the history and food. And the food was different in Khiva than in any other city I had been to so far in Uzbekistan.
Islam Khoja Minaret - We started the day in Khiva old town, visiting some of the famous sights, and climbing to the top of a minaret. My legs are still sore!
Hotel Malika Kheivak - At a small and peaceful restaurant, we lounged on the traditional Uzbek tables and ate gumma, something similar to fried dumpling pockets.
Djuma Mosque - Known for its hypostyle hall, this is a landmark mosque and museum to visit when you’re in Khiva.
Tea House Mirza Boshi - For mid-morning snack, we headed over to a teahouse in the center of the old city to try a dish called shivit oshi, an Uzbekistan Khiva speciality of green dill noodles topped with meat stew. It was delicious.
Shivit oshi - 20,000 UZS ($2.42) per plate
Fish Restaurant - For next lunch we headed out of the city a little ways to a river and pond to eat fish. The fish was fresh and we had both a fried fish and a grilled fish, both of which were delicious.
Total price - 135,000 UZS ($16.33)
Family home cooked meal - We woke up the next day and were invited over to a local family home to cook and eat. They took hospitality to the next level, welcoming us into their home, preparing special tuhum barak (egg stuffed dumplings), and a surprise plov at the end of our meal. It was one of the most memorable and special meals of my entire trip to Uzbekistan. Thank you to this amazing family.
And that wraps up this entire Uzbekistan Food and Travel series. It was an incredible trip, full of delicious and massive portions of food, hospitable people, and immense history. Again, thank you to Bekruz and the Ministry of Tourism Uzbekistan for making this trip happen.

I am so grateful to you for sharing your experiences in Uzbekistan, Mark, it is not a country/place that i have ever heard very much about and that is truly a shame because from the very start everything about Uzbekistan deeply appeals to me; the fruits, the bread, the kaymak, the tea, the Plov, the meat and fish and salads...the people, the culture, the ancient buildings and minarets and the beautiful, utterly beautiful mosaics everywhere...it was a very clever move on the part of the ministry for tourism to invite you because i am absolutely certain that there are going to be flocks of your viewers/subscribers adding Uzbekistan high on their list of places to visit and enjoy in the future, i know it is number one on mine, thanks again for enabling us to gain a little knowledge and vicariously to have a taste of such a wonderful culture

Uzbekistan is wonderful. It is a country living together with history. There are lots of treasure. These have been carefully kept. I wonder if the bread called Gumma has onions. There are many vegetables in every dish, it is healthy and looks delicious. Fried fish also has vegetables. It looks like tomato. The fish has many small bones, but it feels like being white with white clothing. Is Mark not the first time to skip the drones in this town. Many old buildings are left. The view of the night is fantastic. Traditional home cooking is wonderful. I covered eggs with dumpling skin. Boil it and eat it with yoghurt. This is a local cuisine. Egg mixture Put meat on rice and eat. This would be delicious. History, nature and land make friends and culture. Thank you very much.

OMG...…. Uzbekistan looks soooooo inspirational. Not to mention the food AND the blue skies...…………...The architecture that you are showing throughout is just soooo beautiful that I am drooling just as much at that as I am the Uzbek food. WOW.

I thought this Uzbekistan episode is something I will pass at watching... lo and behold, this set is such a revelation! Uzbekistan has a charm of its own. Love this one Mark! More of Central Asia please? The history and enigma of the region told through food. How good can that get? PS. No Bekruz? Hope I spelled his name right.

So true!. Where sometimes culture seems an enigma; the food tells the story of origin and influence through it's generation. I loved seeing the culture as much as the food on this last adventure.
