A smudging ceremony uses various medicines such as sage to create a cleansing smoke that is meant to heal the mind, body and spirit. As the smoke rises, our negative energy and feelings are lifted away. Smudging may also be used to cleanse rooms or Mother Earth before ceremonies and special events, and may also be used to purify ceremonial objects such as an eagle feather.
To take part in a smudge, participants stand in a circle while an Elder or First Nations person will move from person to person with a feather and a smudge bowl. Upon your turn, cup the smoke in your hands and waft it over yourself to cleanse your body, (much like how you would use water to cleanse your hands and face).

It is done in rituals of different countries, in their own ways, especially to purify their spirituality. Madam has so nicely explained it. Great.👍

I am comfortable using White Sage very much. I also have a Palo Santo wood. Smudging for me is asking the Holy Spirit to cleanse me and our home. A purification. Inviting good things & wishing good thoughts to others. What we wish on others comes back to us....always wish goodness. 🦋🙏💕

I have a question. Let’s say my class has a Indigenous guest speaker come in and we do a Smudge together. (I’m non-indigenous by the way). It is also my first Smudge. Afterwards I might send the speaker an email saying how it was a great experience. Am I allowed to say ‘it was very cool’? Would they appreciate that or would it be inappropriate?

I’m like 3 years late. But I’m fine if anyone says it. I’m Métis. Partly indigenous from here in Alberta, Canada. 🇨🇦

Can you do this on your own?

I do it on my own. I was introduced to the practice by friends and community..I was taught the medicine is for everyone and as long as you are setting a good intention, and recognize the reciprocity in the ritual..give it back to the earth as your offering after you have burned the herbs.

Hello, I'd love to hear your thoughts on the current sentiment from the younger generation of Native Americans that non natives should not use white sage to smudge. Thoughts?

Why you wouldn't want to share such of wonderful thing? After all we are all children of mother earth! Maybe it's what many people need to clean themselves

@@elibeth06 there is a huge movement of gen z protesting its use by non indigenous. Saying that use of white sage in smudging rituals is appropriation. I used to use it but I grew it myself. now I only use Golden sage.

Spirituality goes beyond blood and skin. If they’re doing it correctly, learning and being respectful, then there shouldn’t be a problem. Allowing yourself to be offended by something that does not apply to you only holds you back.
