Traditional Log to Beam Hewing - Huge Axes

My website is www.bucklehurst... for high quality handmade leather belts, bags, axe covers, tool rolls etc.
In this film Dr Damian Goodburn, one of Britain's leading specialists in ancient woodworking, shows the Bodgers how he hews a log to create a beam.
Damian has a great knowledge of ancient worked timbers and woodworking tools, and gave a very interesting demonstration of log hewing using his fascination collection of specialist axes.
Damian frequently works with archaeologists to provide advice and insights into past carpentry techniques, based on the evidence of ancient worked timber, and by using reconstruction archaeology to compare his woodworking tool marks to those left behind in ancient timbers.

This is great! There are tons of hewing videos out there but rarely is there an explanation or narration into the actual reasoning of the hewing method.

I like all the specific side axes as they look cool. But I reckon they were used in the construction of posher buildings for example old churches have very nicely straight lined beams but a barn on the other hand is like anything goes and you can tell they just used whatever ax they had to hand.

I am probably wrong but isn't there evidence of Scandinavians of that period using gull wing axes especially in shipbuilding? He didn't seem to think so but i have heard the opposite from multiple other reliable resources!

Adam Milligan they used long bearded axes for these purposes

I have a practical application for this. I'm slabbing up logs using an Alaskan sawmill, a chainsaw in a jig, and I need to start with a flat surface. Rather than setting up rails over the log and cutting my first flat edge, I'm trying to learn how to do it with a hewing axe. This tutorial is hugely helpful.

Hi Jack - its only about 25 - 30 miles from me....but I have not been there - looks very interesting - I see there is a website for Hayle Mill but not much on it. Thank you! I believe the chalk-line demonstration shows what I have been suspecting -- that you should pull the line directly up, and not just away from the core of the log. I also appreciate seeing how a knowledgeable person would hold a broad axe, and how hard to swing it.

Finally--a chisel-edged broadaxe being used. I wouldn't attempt to flatten a log with a conventional axe.

He should have put chaulk lines at the top and bottom of the log. Not two on top. At the end it showed this.
