Theres something magical about harvesting your own wood, the smell and feel of it, also having a love for trees and respecting how important they are in nature.
@CircmcisionIsChi1dAbus32 жыл бұрын
If you've never smelled the fruity/sugary scent of douglas wood, you're missing out. If you've ever seen outdoorsman cutting wood or doing anything, one of the first things they sometimes do is smell it. Almost as if to make sure it smells proper XD like food almost. You test it with your sense of sight first, then touch, then smell. With how much modern life has such a hyper fixation on sight and sound, you lose those more primal senses of touch and smell. That's why there is an eastern philosophical saying, "touch grass" as a way to connect with your primal roots. Kind of like "stop to smell the roses"

@MickGrewcock7 жыл бұрын
Ha! Very wise, you know dogs - and men. Ideally, grain should run straight along length of bow (so when viewed across the end, you can see the growth rings). Not always possible but that's the ideal. I believe that bows can be made from DIY store oak or ash boards and it is possible to have the grain turned 90 degrees - that is running from back to belly of the bow. But never tried it. Get some wood and have a go! All my videos aim to encourage beginners to have a try - what's the worse can happen - firewood? Good luck with all those bows! Mick

Very nicely put together film. I think I will try to make a similar bow this winter with a piece of chokecherry wood which is abundant here in Saskatchewan, Canada. It must be what the First Nations used also as there is little other wood around on the prairies. There is poplar and aspen but I don't think those would be any good. I did make a very quick bow by binding together the thick ends of two small tapered saplings so that the thickest parts became the handle. No tillering at all, but it shoots well for a 5 minute build.

It's been almost 20 years since I tried bowyering in the mountains of western Carolina. Locust and Hickory were my best native woods for bows back then although I did find a piece of Osage Orange in a wooded clearing a ways from the vineyard where I worked. I've just found a piece of briar... I've been out to work on a bow and it was too freezing cold to work. I had my hands in my pockets for half an hour and failed to bring the feeling back, but on the way, in a hedge, is a thick, straight dead briar stem just thick enough for a bow.... It was too cold to take my gloves off, though. One day soon, when it's warm enough, I'm going to cut it and have a good look at it and make a rose bow if I think it's worth a go... 'Strewth! It's colder now than in January while I was chasing starlings...

Nice video. You'd best shoot your dinner quickly, I don't know about ash, but most green woods when they dry out will cause the wood to crack once it's been shaped and stressed. The cracks on the back can cause the bow to fail. If it's really 60 lbs it will be quite spectacular when it explodes, more likely it will just crunch when you string it. I used to make green sapling bows when I was a kid and they don't last very long. If you have a good stand of ash, cut down a longer and much thicker section of tree and let it season a year or two and you could make a really nice bow, the longer the better for a self bow.
@MickGrewcock8 жыл бұрын
+SeadartVSG Hello, thank you for your fantastic advice. I made the bow to see if I could work a piece of green wood with hand tools, rather than make a bow that will last. I have finished the bow and have left it to dry, just to see how it progresses, but I am under no illusion that I have a long-time bow. It drew about 50lbs when I got it home but, being green, it took a set quite quickly. It is now unbraced and slowly drying in a steady atmosphere. I already have some heavy ash logs seasoning of army next attempt - because I think I proved to myself that I can make a self-bow with simple tools. Thanks for watching and once again many thanks for your advice which I appreciate. Mick
@SeadartVSG8 жыл бұрын
+Mick Grewcock I know the native americans who used to live in the region where I grew up made green wood bows out of chokecherry and smeared them with animal fat (bear grease I believe.) I think I have read where you can rub an oily finish into the bow and it may last a long time, I've never tried it, and I'm not sure how porous the green ash would be.
@MickGrewcock8 жыл бұрын
+SeadartVSG Thanks for that! The English ash is a very dry wood (burns immediately, no seasoning required) and apparently reacts quite well to heat/fire hardening which - I'm told - increases the hardness of the wood and increases the draw weight. All very interesting - we know so much in the modern age, yet have forgotten more than we can image. Take care, and thanks again, Mick

Am interested to know - having used ash for other things - doesn't its hardening when dried take away the flexibility and thereby render the bow useless after only a relatively short time? What sort of life span can you expect from it? A very enjoyable video though.

Wonderful... I've made a few bows from ash. It's one of the few trees with lots of straight wood, especially where it's growing in thick clumps.... Where the woods have been cleared a few years ago is the place to look. When the light gets in, the seeds grow like wheat.... I used to tiller in a tree like that. Then I realised it's easier to hang the bow from the string, rather than balancing it on the belly... Pulling on the bow rather than the string. The end result is the same and i found it hard to balance the bow and pick up the tillering cord at the same time. The slightest weight on the cord would unbalance the thing, or a gentle breeze... I think there's a video on my channel, doing it my original way. It's easier to find a tree to hang the string on, too... In my video, that was the only tree in the garden I could balance that bow in...
@MickGrewcock6 жыл бұрын
Yes many people tiller like that. Never tried it yet but could be useful in the woods. Thank you. Mick

Hi John and thanks for watching and commenting. Sorry you've not had success - I put mine down to beginner's luck using a randomly chosen green sapling and making it into a bow with whatever hand tools I could lay my hands on. I didn't expect it to survive but I still have it and it draws about 30lbs. Thanks again and do have another go at making a bow. Atb, Mick

An interesting video, Mick, it certainly held my attention. I'm an archery myself (olympic recurve) and I can see the attraction of traditional long bow.

Just a wee afterthought, have you considered laminating different woods ?

+Celtic Minstrel Hi there, I have little knowledge of suitable laminate woods - I prefer single wood self bows. But thanks for your comment. Atb, Mick

Great video . A "stomp vise " / step vise or hip vise made from rope - 2 branches and attached to a tree will hold a stave while a bowyer shaves and contours wood for the correct geometry . This is done while standing . No stooping down and the weight of the foot keeps the stave tightly clamped or the pushing of the hip sideways accomplishes the same thing . Works good in 2 feet of snow . My hyper opinionated ass strikes again . Best wishes and thanks for all of your videos Mick .

Sorry for being late to reply to this. Seen these on youtube and keen to have a go at making/using one soon! Hope you are well.

If you find a video on a stomp vise please let me know . Have never seen a video on a stomp / step vise . I used to have YT public videos and my videos are private these days . My Great Uncle / Apache "indian" and bowyer showed me those primitive vises over 50 years ago and I started teaching them to the military and later (circa 1976) to civilians - military SAR / search and rescue etc. Things are fine and getting ready for the hunting season . Will use a black powder rifle first season and a plains Indian bow when bow season arrives . Bow is hedge wood - sinew backed - approximately 75 pounds . Arrows are sumac or cedar with vulture fletching's - hand forged broad heads made from old wagon and buggy springs . Some points are flint - chalcedony or obsidian .... and Yes ... I have made more than a few bodkins . Unable to produce paragraphs . My "channel" is old and utilizes the old "module" system . Take care of yourself - Adios ... Left Cat / Patrick
