One important one that you missed, is the kraken tattoo. That one is earned when you survive the sinking of your vessel. Another two are the dragon for visiting China, and the golden dragon for crossing the International Date Line. And with the swallows, you only get two no matter how many miles more you sail. In my seven years, I've earned both swallows, knot, boatswain, fouled anchor (merchant seaman), 'hold fast' for handling natural line and tackle, and almost earned the kraken when one of our mains exploded.

Contrary to popular belief tattoos even have a history within Christianity, as pilgrims from all over would get “pilgrim tattoos” in Jerusalem. There’s even an existing tattoo shop there that’s been doing them for something like 700 years

Yup! Tattooing is a long tradition in the Coptic side of Orthodox Christianity. It started in the earlier years of Islamic oppression, they would tattoo the inner right side of their wrist with a cross to mark themselves and their children as Christian to ensure a Christian burial (The policy was that Egypt was a Muslim country and the default burial practice was Islamic). It was also used to mark their children for if they were abducted and pressed into service for the military, that they would forever know that their family and lineage was Christian. The tradition continues on to this day.

Couple other cool ones that could have been mentioned: different color turtles. Turtle tattoo means you're a shellback. Regular turtle means crossed the equator. Golden shellback is gold turtle, crossed equator at the international date line. Emerald shellback means cross at prime meridian. Another one for floating is rudders on the buttcheeks. Keeps ya up. Mermaid=Sailors love of sea. Golden dragon = traveled the straights of Japan

The cannons was a gunner’s mate rate tattoo. The crossing ceremony was a big deal because they would have to pass through the doldrums where there was practically no wind and represented a dangerous stretch of water. The square rigged ship was supposed to have an odd number of sails otherwise it was bad luck.

Guys, as always, loved the episode... just a small tini correction, the nautical star is wrong, the correct one has 4 points (North, South, East, West), a 5 point star does not point anywhere, so it wont help you find your way home. I've been sailing for the past 5 years, so I have earned 4 of those tatoos (I will never ink the rooster or the pig) Again, loved the episode
