Welcome to Kimono Mom's Kitchen! This is a Cooking Show by a Japanese mom and her daughter. Today, we made Traditional Japanese New Year's Soup called Ozouni. The taste of soup depends on region to region, so I'm showing two kind of soup. One from Kyoto where I was born, the another one from Tokyo. There is some Japanese unique ingredients like rice cakes, but you can make the soup using your local vegetable. Please give it a try! If you make it, please tag me and share it!

It is so beautiful to see, what becomes of a child when given love, respect and attention from birth. Yes, you get a beautiful, tiny, bright light like Sutan. How many parents would trust their TWO YEAR OLD with a razor sharp peeling tool? It is so wonderful how Moe is growing her little body, her soul and her mind.

Yes it’s the Kyoto white miso version and it’s a slightly sweet miso. The miso also makes the soup a little thick. My mom is from Kyoto and I was born there even though I grew up in the US so I grew up on the white miso ozoni.

The fact that Sutan is learning the importance of each ingredient and how its added to the food.. she’s learning to appreciate the work it takes going into each meal and is enjoying her food so much more.. it’s such a respectful way to teach her and she’ll grow up knowing all this valuable information and delicious recipes ❤

Yuzu, white miso and mochi??!!... I'm sure that soup tastes VERY special and fresh. I'm going to make some of your soup tonight - I happen to have everything on hand. 😊 I have been acquiring various heirloom seeds to grow my own traditional Japanese vegetables and herbs at home. I was able to get some of the Kyoto Red Carrot seeds you showed us and used for the New Year, and in your soup. Kyoto Reds are supposed to be one of the all-time best tasting carrots. I can't wait to plant and harvest my own!

My wife makes a more complicated version full of vegetables (arrimo, gobo, lotus root, bamboo root, daikon, carrot, mizuna), with dried shrimp, bonito, Tako, clams, abalone, plus mochi. My brother-in-law loves her version. It seems over the years, the version that came over to Hawaii since the early 1900's, continued the style that their families continued to prepare. The two versions look fine and are less time-consuming to prepare. My mom usually didn't do her Japanese version but the version my Korean dad enjoyed which is slightly different, but it's still a mochi soup for New Year. I'll have to try toasting the one of the mochi and par-boiling the other to see how it changes the dish. Thanks. The little one is such a joy to watch.

Sutan is just growing in front of our eyes, I can't even imagine how it must be for Moe and Moto, when they see her making and doing new things in life and sometimes talking more and more maturely. Also for me personally the Tokyo one is more colourful and more fun, especially for a kid, but the Kyoto one made me feel the warmth and comfort just by looking at it. It's great that Sutan gets to get both as a child!

That looked really lovely Moe. Thank you for sharing with us all. The look on Sutan's face as she was peeling the carrot was priceless!. She doesnt know it but she is learning so much and more importantly she is enjoying it. I can see eventually the channels name will have to change to "Kimono Mom and Daughter" It is so wonderful seeing you both interact. Each new video is showing Sutan growing up and more and more I can see her mimicking her mother, not just in actions but also in looks etc it is so cute to see. Keep safe and well everyone and look forward to the next wonderful video :)

Thank you for this lovely video! I live in Brazil, but my family is originally from Japan and we eat Ozouni every year, we always look forward to this day so we can have it! However, my grandma is getting quite old (she's 98yo now) and it has been some years since she doesn't quite remember the ingredients properly 😅 ♥️ we think she's so sweet, but I wondered which should be the correct ones! She's originally from Fukuoka and the version we usually make looks more like Tokyo's version from the video. Congratulations on the channel, you have a wonderful family and a true talent to bring us love and smiles from a video ♥️
