I have just found this fab channel as I always used to make my soup on the stove, however after a stroke and (still recovering, )I wanted to see if I could make veg soup, lentil soup etc in the slow cooker, and hey presto found "What's for Tea" which is now my fav go too for slow cooker recipes. Just fantastic, first class video's and how to do all at the same time. Thanks a million for this excellent channel, its first class. Made the veg soup last week, tasted just as good as on the stove version, doing the Lentil Soup tomorrow, and can't wait to taste it from the slow cooker. 🥰

Hej from north Sweden, an expat old Scot who got incredibly homesick watching this vid (I subbed for more "home-i-ness") Here, it took an age for me to source lamb, no bone with it but I will absolutely make this soup. My Granny used to make a beautiful Scotch Broth and I still remember how it tastes. Thanks so much for this.

When I was a wee boy, my mother would send me to the butcher’s (in Academy St., Inverness) to buy “A piece of beef and a piece of mutton for soup”. The rest of the recipe was very like yours, except she started with twice the amount of onion, carrots and neeps. She would boil half the veg for an hour or so, remove them and throw them away. Then she would use the veg water as a stock. We’d eat the 2 meats with some of the veg from the broth on the first day and for several days after that we’d have “Next day’s soup”. Mmmmm … She was a lovely cook, my old ma.

Easy as pie! I make mine w/ browned lamb shanks, pearl barley, lots of leeks, a carrot or two, and a glug of red wine, maybe some chicken broth. The secret is to let it rest in the cold overnight, then lift off the layer of mutton tallow on top. Hello, Jasper! :)

Making my grocery list now! I hope you can give me a few pointers... 1) I'm using Knorr lamb stock cubes (which I just had shipped to me from Great Britain because you can't get lamb stock in the U.S. and I'm too inexperienced to make it from scratch), but I've never used them before. Any advice using these things? 2) What's the flavor of the turnips? I've honestly never eaten them before (rutabaga here in the U.S.). I'm making this either way, I just need to figure out if I want to add leeks. 3) When would you suggest adding the leeks? 4) Jasper is adorable, and my little Lady Grey says hi. Thanks again for sharing your recipes with the world! :)
@steelerbear5 жыл бұрын
Gave it a go today! The lamb stock cubes were easy enough. Turnips/rutabaga are nice and slightly sweet--I used the leftovers (because all produce here in the U.S. is insanely large) to make some fries. I couldn't find dried whole peas here--seems everyone thinks you should only need split peas--so that's what I used. Turns out split peas and leeks both cook around the same rate in a slow cooker, so I added them both after 4 hours of cooking on high. I also only needed about 6 hours of cooking time on high, so I wonder if US and UK slow cookers have different temperature settings, or maybe our ingredients cook differently because of all the hormones and additives in our vegetables. Either way, this was delicious. Oh! And some other recipes online mention adding lamb stew meat, so after I had a bowl without any lamb, I cooked some up on the stove, tossed it in, and WOW, the flavor was enhanced SO MUCH! Not a bad addition if your appetite calls for it, but this is wonderful even without it.
@arthas6403 жыл бұрын
@@steelerbear what they call peas are also sold in the US as "marrow peas" and they're hard to find because we really only grow sweet peas in warmer areas and lentils including split peas in cooler climates. The US and Canada produce most of the worst lentils so they kind of forced out marrow peas as a staple.

Hi, new subscriber here having just 'found' your channel. Struggle with chronic arthritis, standing in kitchen is a trial so broth making is not on my to do list. With this scotch broth recipe any easy way of substituting the lamb stock And keeping the flavour? Also, how many approximately, are your recipies for please? An oldie who is no great cook here.
@sharonjojo4 жыл бұрын
Hi Veecee, I am the same as you with very painful Rheumatoid Arthritis, standing chopping vegetables is so painful for me too at times, you can get pre-chopped vegetables from the supermarkets now (Not expensive) I think that this broth will serve about 4-6, & yes, you can substitute the lamb stock for vegetable, hope this helps!

My grandmother made this soup every Sunday until she was well into her eighties. She used beef on the bone for braising which is quite economical to buy. This produces a lovely flavour. She always used leeks and grated an extra carrot through it. She also added fresh parsley at the end. Everyone loved her soups. From Bernadette
@essemsween8185 жыл бұрын
When you say Turnip are you meaning the smallish white top/green bottom, white flesh root, or do you mean Swede the larger burgundy/cream-ish with Orange fleshed toot vegetable? I think in Scotland your 'Neeps' are what we call Swede (one of my favourite vegetables). Did you turn the Slow-Cooker to low after it came to the boil or did you cook it on high all day? Thank you.

Have you tried using split peas, instead of dried peas? They don't need to be soaked overnight and I figure I'll try making this soup tomorrow using split peas (because I have 100g left from another soup). They are dried peas that have been peeled and make for a wonderful texture and rich flavor. I used them for a dutch split pea soup, which was also fantastic. The one thing that I dislike about this recipe is the 8+ hours of cooking time. Split peas might be a way to reduce that time by 2 hours, we'll see. I have not cooked with pearl barley before and it seems it might need the time, after all.

Even nicer if you use some lamb (neck for example) simmered with the herbs until the meat comes off the bone. Then use the stock for the soup and add thé chopped up meat. More flavourful and more authentic.

I really like when Jasper makes an appearance. Even though I am more of a cat person, I have a dog that is the size of a cat. She is really spoiled! My son gave her to me, so I coddle her about the way I coddled my son when he was a tiny tot. My little mutt is so very cute, but she can't compare with Jasper's dignified persona. Don't tell him I know he loses some dignity when the camera isn't recording and he plays like a kitten :)

Im trying this tho the veg is a cassarole mix veg from asda all prepared i mean i could have done the chopping as had the veg as well but im lazy. Anyhow so i plonked it all in with some beef cubed up from freezer (flash defrost with hot water from kettle) with few veg stock cubes and hot water, put it on high from about 6am. I just checked on it (oh btw i used almost 80% of a pack of scotch broth mix not presoaked as i love barly) anyhow my slow cooker is about 3 quarts size one not the biggest but not smallest, about your size). Anyhow so yeah i checked on it after 3 hours its 9am and the pearl barley is soft, the peas are not hard tho not quite soft yet but the thing was almost half the water was soaked up, the potatoes are soft ish i could cut a bit in half with edge of a spoon, the carrots not so much yet. I filled the water up again with hot water from kettle and gave it a good stir. Do i really have to keep it on high for another 6 hours? I think it might be mush by then i mean i think even the meat was more or less done lol. Using a proper crock pot branded one btw.
@SkeeterUK5 жыл бұрын
I stopped it after 4 hrs on high it was done, ive no idea how the lady did hers on high for 9hrs it would have made it mush so id say dont do it on high if u do tho check it at 4 hrs ok

Folks that deviate from the original recipe ,, then they bloody well complain because it didn't turn out the same as the posted recipe. First of all the recipe shown in this clip is perfect, the only change I make is I add leeks and a little celery. Scotch broth is made with Lamb ,, that's it LAMB ,, not frozen beef you defrosted with hot water, it's made with lamb ( or mutton ) stock, not some chemical laden veggie stock cubes and also not with Scotch broth " pre - mix ".
