Traditional Sri Lankan Lunch! 🇱🇰

Sri Lanka, Colombo, Mayura Hotel. I went to try some of the best traditional lunch spots in Colombo (SPICY OMELET CURRY) at Mayura Totel
After seeing a review of ‪@MarkWiens‬ of this place, I knew I had to try it!
He was not wrong!
The spicy omelet was delicious! As soon as I walked in and smelt it, I knew I had to go upstairs and check how it was being cooked. The chef was preparing it fresh in front of me!
The meal came with an amazing array of different rice pullers, daal, chicken curry and soya meat. This was some of the best and most truly traditional lunch spots that I have been to in Sri Lanka!
The place had a variety of other dishes including a crab curry and chicken cheese kottu!
If you are in the area, I highly recommend you try the cheese kottu in the Lanka Hotel:

The Kanji you drank is made with tapioca seeds. Usually we make with coconut milk, jaggery and cardomon. Glad to see you are enjoying your time in Sri Lanka. 🇱🇰🇨🇦

Its locally called “Saw Kanji” its made with Sago Seeds, coconut milk, Jaggery, sugar and little bit of salt added. natural Cardamom is used as an essence. Sago seeds are derived from Tapioca( manioc ) yam / root. Its a sweet delicacy used as a dessert after meals.

9:25 Soya meat or soya chunks is vegetarian meat, it has 53% protein . it is a very popular home cooked food in India . your eating by hand skill is as good as locals . you adapt very well .

Pleasure to see you eating by fingers Ali!! 👍 We eat Dal curry with bread, rice & any kind of Rotties too. Specially children loves dal n rice to eat & used cook in every house daily basis. Before the breakfast which you had was "Sago poridge" cooked in coconut milk & sweetned with jaggery, seasoned & spiced up along with Cinnamon + Cardamom. It cools down your body, specially we drink it during summer season & daily basis during Ramadan as well. Your good man Kumara was very helpful with big smile on face. There's alot to try Sri Lankans curries Ali!! Go for it ✌️

Hi Ali.....Sago is a starch extracted from a core tissue of tropical palm trees. Its a vegetarian food. What you had was Sago kanji which is a mixture of Sago, sugar or hunny and water. This is body cooling food

Ali, remember to stress a little more when you say 'mama' (like 'Maamaa' ) because if you don't stress 'mama', it means like 'I' or 'me' in Sinhalese, so the others will get confused. However, your Sinhalese is very good and you pronounce pretty well. BTW, have you extended your visa, if not try doing it online and when you go there (if you have to) it would be much faster.

Great going Ali. You must try the Rasik Bhai shop in aluthkade which has got 50+ varieties of NON VEG items; also try the Sri Lankan dish Pittu (2 types: coconut pittu and Mani pittu) with beef or mutton intestine curry. Then for dessert, try the famous Watalappam dish at the same shop; they don’t make this dish there, the neighbours in that area make from their home and deliver to the shop I guess, so it’s home made.

It’s called ساغو -sago. Also known as tapioca seeds. Good to cool the body. Meat version is called kanji, made with rice.

I love sago.Thats the drink you had. It is sweetened with Jaggery which is made by boiling down the sap of the flower of the kithul tree(Caryota Urens, a tree mainly found in south India and Sri Lanka)
