■ SRI LANKA, KANDY: Whenever I'm in a new city I like to check out the local markets to see what goods are for sale and how much they cost. I generally don't care much for the price (whether I overpay or not) on these occasions as I'm happy to help out the local vendors who toil there day in and day out. But even I have my limits.
After buying some socks at a pretty decent price at at the first market stall I entered I decided to go on a little shopping spree. It was then that I ran into the biggest con artist I've ever meet in any market worldwide!

There is indeed good and bad in each and every country no matter where you visit so the chances are that you are going to end up having an encounter with both. I personally am located in Canada 🇨🇦 where I was born and raised here in the province of British Columbia and although I have traveled to 4 other countries so far as an adult (I am in my very early 20's and due to my siblings and I being raised by a single mother our family was never able to afford to travel anywhere while I was growing up) with all but one of those countries being located in Latin America, I must say that I have personally witnessed more scam attempts in my home country compared to when I had traveled. I would like to clarify that the scams never happened through local businesses and stores but rather with the people who live here in their own time. Back before Walmart became more strict on their return policy as they used to blindly trust that their "customers" would be fully honest whenever returning a product WITHOUT the receipts created the problem where people would attempt to steal from Walmart and come back another day or to a different location and return their previously "purchased" item for a full money back refund... That was definitely more of a scam then what these people are doing at these markets as they do not force their customer to pay that much, the customers willingly pay the provided price and yes the customer may be paying for their item unknowingly that it is overpriced - but it is up to the customer to do their own research prior to shopping in a country unfamiliar to them.

Different kind of work ethic. Some people in some countries have no understanding of the outside world. They think we're all rich; hence, it's justified to rip us off. It's more of a victim mentality than a entrepreneur mentality of fairly earning an income. In their mind it's not ripping us off, it's us giving them charity. He had every opportunity to quote some absurd price (at the 6,000 price point i personally would have mentioned 4,800). I never go into shops to just look. When they say, "It can't hurt to look" it does hurt to look because they will drag everything out of every drawer and keep you in the shop as long as possible. Then there are the looks of disappointment and "I show you everything and you buy nothing?" You just spent a half hour+ in the shop being bored stiff and that hurts. Oh God, never go to those tailor shops. More often than not they give you an inferior cloth and quality. Nobody EVER wants to talk to you because of where you come from. The only reason is to get your money. Period. You are an opportunity.
