Why did they shorten the barrels? I was getting ready to order one until I saw this. A long rifle should be a long rifle.

you guys notice THEY didn't call them "long rifles". Most of the American rifle styles started out as European Hunting styles, then became (IMHO, comically) longer and more "Frilly". If it really matters to you, you can just pretend they're recreations of early examples made with imported components and stocked here.

@@wildrangeringreen Well kid, you seem unaware that these are muzzloding flintlocks. These take powder and a bullet separate unlike modern guns. And there is a flint near the trigger that ignites your flash powder.

Kinda new to percussion ... would like to use Hornady round balls... what would you recommend .490 or .495 and do I need a patch and if so what patch... will be using goex ff or fff... again what would you recommend ... be hunting whitetail... thanks again new to this percussion ... I also have a brand new tradition deer hunter

I use 490 ball and pillow tic round patches that are pre lubed Traditions sells them also #11 caps good luck and have fun make sure it says R for rifle on powder bottle

A crockett is 32 caliber,.......it's usually more expensive than a 50 caliber,......a 50 caliber hawken is the same thing.

because people actually carry and use these to hunt with... and a 60", 11 lbs rifle is a PITA to do that with.

@@waylonlegend4603 Not in my woods... hard to watch for deer while you're ducking thick trees, branches and brush with a 5 foot rifle!! I like long guns too.. but not practical in many areas...

Here in Washington the brush and trees get THICK. Sometimes it is nice to have something a bit shorter when you are hunting.

Do yourself a favor and stay away from the PITA kits they sell. Spend the extra little bit to have ready to go.Or even better buy a Lyman.
