The Lakers were not participants in the weekend's NBA Draft Lottery. Not directly, at least.
Indirectly, however? Yeah, they're involved. Because when the Atlanta Hawks won the thing (despite only having a 3% chance of doing so), earning the top pick, it added an unexpected wrinkle to this offseason. If the Hawks decide to put guards Trae Young and Dejounte Murray on the market, the Lakers are expected to be interested in both.
But does winning the top pick make Atlanta more or less likely to put folks on the market? Does it mean the price goes up or down?
And which of those guys should they target?
And is the answer neither, if Donovan Mitchell is available?
How the Lakers view this question philosophically will reveal a lot about the direction they go this summer. Could continuity still be on the table? The Lakers and D'Angelo Russell could remain in a relationship of mutual need. There is no rule that says Rui Hachimura must be traded. They don't have to reconstruct the roster completely.
But they could!

Unfortunately Trae Young is no franchise cornerstone type of player - he doesn't need to be for the Lakers, but he does need the ball in his hands to be effective - and Dejounte Murray does not move the needle enough to warrant a multiple player trade.

If it’s me I’m going to get DeJaunte Murray and then going after Jerami Grant!!! Lakers need high quality role playing starters alongside their two stars!!! Then add a true center and a look for Max or some vet to fill out SG role… AD, Bron, Jerami Grant, Max(?) and DeJaunte Murray…. A starting 5 that can be effective on both ends of the court is what’s needed to win; guys that only offer offense are overpaid in this league like Trae or Zach Lavine

TBH Denver have some of the best ROLE PLAYERS even watching this Wolves series Gordon is going off at any moment MPJ or Gordon can drop 20+ all while ur tryna stop Joker and Murray ….not to mention KCP who’s a all around solid player that can knock down shots …. That's exactly how I feel about Rui. Obviously, the matchup vs. Denver matters, because they're not going anywhere anytime soon, so the Lakers have to contend with them. But you also don't want to overreact about the matchup that results in a trade that hurts more matchups than it helps. Doesn't make Rui untouchable. He's clearly not. no to both. Lakers need only some tweaks and keep the majority including DLO. They need a good coach such as Mark Jackson, or Terry Stotts with a good defensive minded assistants. However, who ever is the coach should be trusted (left alone) from front office interference but need to take the time to hire coach. Furthermore, if possible convince Lebron to renegotiate a friendly deal. my 2 cents
