I don't know if it would stop him completely but it might help him to have something to paw and get into since he seems to be a very curious/smart cat. you can even make some diy style but they sell them on Amazon and Etsy!

If you want to train them not to jump on certain surfaces, you put strips of aluminum foil on it. Most cats don't like the feel, so they'll stop jumping up there. Takes some time for it to set into their brains, then you can stop doing it. I've trained both of my cats not to jump on the counters, even the entire couch. Saves me so much time vacuuming hair out of the furniture.
