I was a Resident Doctor in Pathology when I was in Nigeria. Will you be surprised when I tell you that the first autopsy might be the real one (involving some primary process observation), and the second one may have involved a lot of arrangee? For a police autopsy or coroner autopsy such as the index case, usually, different parties (the victim, the accused/defendants, the police, etc) have their doctors (representatives) representing them in the autopsy room. But that does not mean that they are doing the dissection. They may not even know what is going on, and what the lead medical examiner (or pathologist) shows them they most often say yes, especially if/ and given that they are colleagues in the same profession, and if they are pathologists or pathologists-in- training, the lead pathologists in the case is most likely their senior colleagues and they would not want to damage their professional relationships and/or stunt their professional growth because of "who don die, wey don die". For example, since this was done at Lasuth (arguably the rallying point for autopsy in Nigeria) and a certain professor (names withheld) likely being the most dominant person there), I put it to you that no pathologist in Nigeria will want to come there and be seen to contradict him (that has implications) nor can they anyway. I don't know how to explain it, but the pathologists usually dance to the tune of the strongest personalities involved; the strongest argument; and who first reached out to the main pathologist in charge of the autopsy, often tend to have the argument skewed in his favour. Autopsy findings are observer-dependent to an extent and can be interpreted in different ways (just as a Court can rule a case in one way, and another court, maybe an appeal court, rule the same case in the opposite way, for the same set of evidence ). Note: I am not saying that that individual or the individuals are corrupt; (although they could be); I am only saying that the party they have "sympathy" with can affect how they choose to interprete their findings. And in Nigeria at the moment, there is hardly an independent review. I have seen doctors (pathologists) from the same team (the same tertiary hospital) argue (sharply contrastingly) about what a particular sign means, and what they finally settle with, is either decided by the loudest voice OR just, as it were, by a throw of the dice. This is one aspect of it , from an insider perspective from the autopsy dissection room. So, when you say there were so and so many doctors there present (and/or all the parties were represented), I laugh. Now, from the societal/social perspective. Do you think that the Doyen School and the parents of those five or so boys (who are probably well-to-do), will sit down and fold their hands and watch their business fold up And/OR their kids go to jail or die by hanging? Food for taught. The legal perspective. The Nigerian legal process is so corrupt that Tinubu was declared the rightly elected candidate by both the PEP Court and the Supreme Court. How bad can it get?

Do not worry, Sylvester's parents! God will avenge his death and i pray that you will witness it. I knew of a girl who caused the death of someone and the parents made her escape justice through bribing the system. They even flew her abroad. Somehow, the girl was tormented by the spirit of the innocent victim and never found peace wherever she went to. She could no longer sleep without taking drugs or alcohol and the light had to remain on. She became a shadow of herself, a living ghost. After many failed attempts, she killed herself. There remain a prison we cannot escape from and that is our conscience. Rest in peace, innocent soul!🙏🏽

Thanks for this. This sounds like a case of medical negligence to me. Seeing that boy rolling on the hospital bed without an obvious medical care really made me wonder what goes on the Nigerian hospitals. In the developed world, a child showing signs of all the ailments you said will be admitted to intensive care wirh all sorts of breathing and treating equipments attached to his mouth, nose and wherever. Sepsis is treated critically knowing that child or adult might die. Passing that child from one hospital to the other and driving many miles back home is not it at all. I weep for Nigeria my country 😢😢😢😢

9:12 Every death in Nigeria is ALWAYS MEDICAL NEGLIGENCE even if you spill blood as healthcare workers. Nobody ask about early presentation of patient to the hospital when their symptoms start. Since the abroadians are so knowledgeable what do you do when a patient is brought in a bad shape and has used all sorts of medications obtained from several pharmacies. I am a doctor here in Nigeria and i can confidently tell you that more than 50 percent coming to the hospital would have visited and used drugs obtained from their pharmacies. Most people don't like govt hospitals but i tell you the govt hospitals they avoid is there best bet.

Thanks Nezeville for sharing these stories about Nigeria and how we can all learn lessons. I was in Ikeja this January 2024. We have to put things into context. Nigeria is a very poor nation in terms of infrastructure but rich in natural resources. Lessons for everyone 1. All parents must identify a good reputable hospital in the area child is gaining education. This is because lack of fast, good quality health care can cost life. The family should have taken him to a hospital close to his school in Lagos instead of traveling hours back to his State of residence. Every family in Nigeria need to put money aside for emergency medical treatment. 2. Untreated sepsis would lead to organ failure and death. FACT! The family doctor should be challenged for not diagnosing correctly and fast. Negligent! This case should be referred to the Nigerian Medical Council. 3. The students that bullied and forced victim to drink some dangerous substance should still face prosecution because their actions triggered the illness and the negligence of the parents for not taking their child to a reputable hospital led to their child's death. 4. All schools should have an anti bullying policy that is written and implemented fairly

This brought tears to my eyes this morning remembering my Dad and the way he was mismanaged by his fellow medical practitioner and my very own colleagues. I have been grieving since 2019 someday when am strong enough I will tell his story. A lot happens in the medical sector and negligence is a major player. The doctor treating at home should have insisted they go to the hospital or stop coming home . In this case they have failed to address what actually caused the Sepsis did it just jump into the little boy? No parent will want the death of a child so they should please leave them out of this let them grieve in peace.May this poor boys soul continue to rest in peace. Amen

🤔 Is it that you didn’t read the final verdict or you didn’t hear that the parents took their child on a 6hour drive and took him home for treatment then took his body to church for healing? Not only did the parents not pick up their child on time they also intensify his agony by their aim of after care. Please read on “sepsis” before you start speaking with sentiment; intravenous antibiotics could’ve saved this boy’s life. May the lil boy soul rest in peace but the negligence of his care was too uproar 🙁

@jeniferjohnson3448 What led to the sepsis? Would the parent's negligence be an issue if Sylvester wasn't bullied? What is the root cause of the agony that the poor boy went through before his death? How on earth will contributory negligence of the parents write off the bullying that caused all these in the first place? They should have got a third doctor to clarify the contradictory tests results to determine which of the results to rely on before giving judgment. It's really unfortunate. May his soul rest in peace

Thanks for the breakdown Neze. This is heartbreaking. Kai! I suspect that in addition to beating him severely, the bullies probably fed Sylvester some kind of sewage or filth hence the onslaught of bacterial infections. I have a question though. Was the first x-ray conducted by the family friend in Lagos not reviewed during the Coroner's inquest? The judge was so, so wrong because how Sylvester's parents handled his case was a direct consequence of the information provided to them by the school. I agree that they (Sylvester's parents) could have dealt with their son's case so much better. However, if the school's Management did not disclose to them what Sylvester had been through, how would they have known how serious the matter at hand was? The boy deteriorated with time. By the School's account, painkillers (Ibuprofen) seemed to provide some relief initially. By failing to disclose to Sylvester's parents the truth of what had happened to him in their custody, the School is at the very least partly responsible for his demise.

The outcome of this situation will bring harm to the family. I am deeply disturbed by these findings and the verdict. The individuals responsible for assaulting the young boy are now free until they harm another child. God will deliver His justice; He sees everything and knows all. Each person will receive their just reward. To the family of the deceased young boy: my thoughts and prayers are with you. If the judgment was incorrect, observe what unfolds within a year for all those who have deceived. While the parents may have unintentionally played a part in their son's passing, in my view, the bullies and the school also share responsibility for the tragic loss of the child.

Have you asked yourself this?; If the child was in the same desperate condition as was shown in his last moments on that bed when they picked him up, would they have followed those courses in the 1st place? Wasn't that scenario after they'd already administered the almighty "anointed chewing gum"? It could likely have happened that a wound was inflicted on him by those supposed bullies, or they're (forcefully?) Initiated into something - given the hand signs the boy was flashing in that pic- & cuts were made on his body with an infected instrument, which caused the infection & by the time they discovered the septicaemia, it was too late, hence his deathbed confession? His parents' statements & actions post-judgement should shed some significant light on determining what exactly was/is the truth. Hopefully.

Did you really watch this lady's presentation ? Having reviewed the entirety of the video referenced, it is clear that there are multifaceted factors contributing to the unfortunate demise of the young boy in question. While allegations of judicial impropriety are serious and warrant scrutiny, it is imperative to ground discussions in the evidentiary realities of the case. The parents' role cannot be understated; their neglect and unwavering faith in the pastor's purported healing abilities undeniably played a significant role in the tragic outcome. The delayed recourse to medical intervention, only pursued when the child's condition had deteriorated perilously, underscores the gravity of their oversight. Were this matter to fall within the purview of my judicial discretion, careful consideration would be given to the culpability of both the pastor and the parents. Their actions, rooted in what appears to be a misguided reliance on faith over practical medical care, warrant examination through the lens of legal accountability. Consequently, in the interest of justice and safeguarding against future instances of similar neglect, the prospect of initiating legal proceedings against the pastor and parents for their roles in the untimely passing of the child would be a pertinent course of action.. If it was in my court I'll order for The pastor and Parents to be Arrested for the cause of this boys demise due to their ignorance

@@nnekairoegbu2360 so all the facts and evidence leading to cause of his death mean nothing to you?🤣 . please learn from this u might save someone's life . Don't take life for granted . if that boys parent didnt make that mistake in avoiding medical attention for the boy he might still be here facing his destiny . Bribery has little or nothing to do with it . That's just the way i see it

The school should have admitted this boy in a good hospital in lagos immediately they saw the clinical state of the child. Let the parents come for their son in the hospital. That trip to warri was unnecessary. The school focus was to transfer the bulk and not cater for the student. The parents should never have taken that trip. He was too sick to take a 6hours trip. Even the guardian did not act swiftly. The bus death was multifactorial. 1. The school negligence 2. Delay in accessing medical treatment of school, guardian and parents.

Many things that dont make sense in this sad case. Tragic and heart-breaking, Our Nigerian ways of going first to "Miracle Prophets" and " Spiritualists" , INSTEAD of FIRST to a good, well-equipped Hospital, has got to stop.. Too many things went wrong for this little Angel.. May his Soul rest in peace and my heart-felt condolences to his parents.

In all these, no one ever mentioned that Sylvester had fever. Fever is a very important symptom and sign of septicemia. If truly He had infection of the muscles or ankle joint, then He should have complained of fever. But till now, there isn't anything to show had fever.
