The Great Lakes Storm of 1913 was the deadliest and most destructive natural disaster to hit the Great Lakes in recorded history. In the tragic aftermath, more than 270 mariners perished in the "White Hurricane" when 12 ships went to the bottom on four of the five Great Lakes; dozens of other freighters were thrust up against the rocks and destroyed or heavily damaged. Twenty-five to 35-ft. waves tore ships apart in a blinding blizzard that left two feet of snow in Cleveland in less than a 24-hour period. With all the tragedy, there were also stories of heroic rescues that came out of the "Big Blow". The great storm devastated the entire Great Lakes region over a four days and nights (Nov. 6 - 10, 1913). The worst damage was done on Lake Huron where the majority of the doomed ships met their watery graves. Nine of the ships have since been located but three remain a mystery. Join me, the History Mystery Man, and Captain Darrell Walton as we dive into the Great Lakes Storm of 1913...enjoy the show!

Yet another great episode of maritime history. Twelve ships lost and such a tragic loss of life. It's so good to see that with the evolution of time, weather forecasting and marine safety protocols have greatly improved. I'm a firm believer that with every tragedy at sea, valuable lessons are learned. It is now up to us in the marine industry to ensure that those mariners did not die in vain.

Grew up on Georgian Bay. Many times would take boat into 30,000 islands in calm water and come out to hugh swells and wind in 14 foot boat. Best times ever. Loved watching Lakers and Keewatin and Assiniboia go by and would yell for my parents to look out.

After 30 years as an OTR truck driver (25 as an owner operator), I officially retired 12/31/23. Over all those years running coast to coast and border to border, I can't even count how many people I've heard talking about how The Great Lakes can't possibly be as violent as those of us raised on and near them say that they are. Those people have absolutely no idea! I also believe 100% that insurance companies have told the owners of those lake boats that they are to find a hiding place and wait it out when the gale warnings come up.

It amazes me that a relatively shallow lake like Lake Erie can be so dangerous and deadly, and people out on it can get into trouble so fast when conditions change.

Being from California, the choppiest lake I’ve seen in person is on Lake Tahoe, certainly nothing compared to Lake Superior! The Sierra Nevada mountains protect all of the lakes around here from wind storms. If more people understood our planet’s weather systems and topography, they would maybe become sober believers in the fury of the November gales on the Great Lakes. I most definitely have learned a lot from HMM’s channel on this point and the human stories are very heart wrenching at times! On another note, I started watching the channel about a year ago, and a few days ago a recommendation came up for a documentary on the Fitz (one I actually had not yet seen 😊). I watched the raising of the bell and the ceremony held to commemorate the crew. I actually wept. Watching this channel makes me feel like I have this special insight into this tragedy now and I do feel closer to the story than the average scroller on the mighty Fitz! Thank you for keeping this story going and for presenting it in a way that makes it down home and accessible to everyone 🙏 ❤

2nd comment: I researched that storm in 2013. It started as a little project, where I was just going to post a few pictures on a certain account I had where I focused on being a kind of tour guide of my little hometown. It was back when there were new ways to connect with people around the world and do sightseeing. So I just wanted to show a little of the maritime history, and explain a bit about why the Great Lakes can be dangerous. It was just going to be a couple posts. It ended up being a much longer series than I intended, and I was emotionally drained when I finished. I ended up going into the lives of some of the victims, and so I felt like I got to know them personally. I don't really recommend to anyone to do that kind of thing unless you've got a way forward mentally and emotionally. I met the grandnephews of one of the men who was killed in the storm, and they said their grandmother never spoke about it, but they knew the pain never ended for her the rest of her life. You know that had to affect her children years later, to always have that grief, and to have it become new every November.

Wow...thanks for sharing your stories here...super interesting. If you know and/or come across any family members, I would love the opportunity to do some video chats with them. @@HistoryMysteryManI can give you a possible lead to contact the family members I spoke with: The Port Huron museum. They sponsored a year-long commemoration, culminating in a lecture by a Detroit TV meteorologist and a talk by one of the divers who found the Regina. The museum reached out to the public to invite family members of those who were lost. The men I spoke with responded to the invitation. I don't remember their names, and to the best of my recollection they live in Lapeer County, but don't hold me to that. Of course it's been 10 years since that commentation year, so there might not be any leads at the museum after all, but it's worth a try!

Hi Don. I really enjoyed this video. You both really helped us understand the horrible severity of this storm. I'm so glad ships today are much more conservative when it comes to storms. Whether it's due to insurance companies, shipping companies, captains, better weather prediction tools, I'm just glad Great Lakes shipping is safer as a result. I regularily monitor Marine Traffic, and when I see 1000 footers seek shelter I'm relieved....knowing caution is being implemented. Thanks guys for taking time to share about this storm. When Capt. @@HistoryMysteryMan the Hawgood’s story I loved. It’s a very good story. They were caught in the storm as well and stayed on the shore and the Captain ordered them out to deeper water and the Wheelsman Ed Kanaby threw the ship out of control and beached it. I live on the Northwest shore of Kelley's Island facing Put in Bay, rite on the water. What kind of damage did the storm do to the islands of Lake Erie? I wonder because I might have to deal with it some day and if so, I want to be ready! Thanks!
@HistoryMysteryMan

I'm not sure on damage reports in and around the Lake Erie islands from the 1913 storm. Fortunately, storms like '13 and the one in '75 that took down the Fitz happen only 2 or 3 times a century. I can appreciate wanting to be ready though. Thanks for checking out the video...HMM

in todays world its hard to grasp tis could happen but that Fathom 5 National Park here in Ontario has 24 wrecks within its borders alone is sobering ...... none of the wrecks from this storm are there but when they start throwing around numbers of 6000 wrecks on the great lakes is numbing

its where the Bruce Peninsula ends in Lake Huron interesting bit ...the escarpment / peninsula runs 400miles from Niagara to Tobermory & higher than 400ft above lake level .Its a ancient reef , imagine the great lakes basin & surrounding area under 4 to 500ft of water .... can you say Spongebob ?@@HistoryMysteryMan

@@HistoryMysteryMan I believe she was found in 1985. but I have never been able to find where I read that again. It will be tough to get permission from the Canadian Govt. They even give cords for her. they almost went straight out to the Smith. How did that happen?? I think they know where she is. but you wont be allowed to go there. Just my thoughts. great episode as always

I almost drown once in lake Michigan and perhaps some if you fellas will know where iam talking about . It was at the beach in Holland Michigan there is a yacht or small ship canal that goes back into some yacht resort right next to the beach Pavillion and a buddy and me swam across it to the other side on a calm summer day. Well my buddy dived in first and I followed and he told me to angle off to one of the iron wrung ladders spaced about 30 yards apart to climb up on the other side. Well I got about half way across and something began to pull me down I guess the under tow and I couldn't get back on top the water. My first reaction was sudden panic and fear followed shortly there after with an absolute state of calm even in the midst of knowing I was going to drown then just after that something lifted me back on top the water and I was able to swim to the iron rung ladder on the other side. On our return trip back I got a large piece of Styrofoam and floated back on it. Later on I told the incident to a security guard who worked there and he told me I was lucky I didn't drown because there had been a lot of people who had over the years.

My folks used to have a 32’ sailboat in Racine. I can tell you a couple times we got caught in some storms that came out of nowhere! They eventually sold the boat, and bought a camper. The Great Lakes are no joke.
