Sheboygan Shenanigans with Captain Darrell Walton...the Uncut Version

3 ай бұрын

Based on feedback from our viewers, we thought we'd show a conversation between myself, the History Mystery Man, and Captain Darrell Walton featuring all the stuff that doesn't make the primary videos...sort of an uncut version of what Darrell and I talk about...stuff that typically goes right to the "trash bin". And stick around for the end where you'll find a hysterical story told by Captain Darrell of his crazy escapades in Sheyboygan, Wisconsin where, as a 22-year-old newbie on the Lake Freighter W. C. Richardson, he was sent ashore by his shipmates for a specific purpose to find "gold" for the crew's next trip across the Great Lakes. Enjoy the ride...and thanks for your continued support!

I’m in agreement with you both about remembering history. If we don’t remember, we’re doomed to repeat it. What really pisses me off are those who want to hide it, or change it to fit a narrative. Sometimes history isn’t fun to look back on, sometimes painful. But it’s so important to teach it, and remember it no matter how bad it is.

I truly enjoy history talk between two old captains. Some of that of which you speak does go on today, but I never saw it. Smelled it, but never saw it. It's different on the Lakes and the inland rivers. On the rivers even when I was cooking on a boat at the dry dock "hotel boat" for the crews that worked on the boats getting repaired, I'd get popped for a sample right now, "if there's something frying on the stove, let it burn." The men didn't get any privacy whatsoever. They did allow me some privacy, but I had to use the common crew head, and it was disgusting. They wouldn't let me use the one in my own quarters. They tested for a bunch of different substances. Nobody was allowed to go ashore to drink alcohol on the rivers. You were on that boat for the full 14, 20, or 30 day hitch. On the Lakes, as long as you weren't on watch and the ship wasn't leaving you could go up the street and drink your fill. Just don't bring it aboard and do be on the ship before she sails.
@HistoryMysteryMan
@HistoryMysteryMan Ай бұрын
Interesting commentary. Again...thanks for sharing it here. In all my days on the tugs...as a deckhand or Captain, I was never once drug tested. The crews regularly went ashore to drink their fill...then stagger back...and away we'd go...amazing. HMM

Another great video Captains Don and Darrell! I too am a fan of the classic rock, including Lynard Skynard. Simple Man is one of my favorite songs and I bet one of yours too. I agree that letting the video run, giving us more time/stories with you both will be highly entertaining. Not everyone can do what you have done sailing the Great Lakes. There's definitely interest there. I grew up on short track and NASCAR racing so I'm interested in your content there as well. Big Fitz talks are my favorite, especially given Cap'n Darrell's personal connection and expert knowledge. We should not forget history "lest we be doomed to repeat it". I noticed that Cap'n Darrell said "Let me say one more thing." and you ended the video. You interrupted "The Beard of Knowledge" ouch 🙂

Man I wanted to run that clip that got cut off at the end so bad, but I never know where to draw the line. It was a story about a school girl up here in Michigan who identifies as a cat. Her parents lobbied the school for her right to identify as such. The school sided with the parents and now put a litter box for her to relieve herself in. This is how screwed up this country is right now. The girl should be in therapy and the parents should be arrested. Lord...help us. Thanks for your feedback. I'm ready for race season! HMM

@@HistoryMysteryMan Makes sense now, thanks for sharing the story with us. Sounds crazy indeed, can't make this stuff up. Enjoy race season! I agree with what Cap'n Darrell said too, do what makes you happy Cap'n Don... You don't need to pick one or the other. You have experience in multiple fields and can share/talk about them in educated/interesting ways. It's great because it's not "theoretical" - You've lived this, been there done that! Your enthusiasm and positivity comes through as well. Lots of reasons why you have our attention and support, if you've made a few friends along the way - that's good too. I'm looking forward to the next video Cap'n Don my best to you and Cap'n Darrel . Take care 🙂
