My father is Native American and loved westerns. When I heard about this movie, I wanted to watch it with him, then he got his cancer diagnosis. I left for the military, and he passed while I was gone. I finally watched this film on the flight home for his funeral. I will never not cry over this movie or it’s soundtrack, and it will always be his to me.

War is a pair of 20/20 glasses. Not while you are in it, but when you step away. I’ve never seen this movie, but this clip seems to sum it up well. War is hyped in a young troop. It has to be hyped in order for it to be effective. After coming back, I was able to see the whole elephant. I feel like this clip captures everything a warfighter can go through.

The costume design in this movie is very well done. Bale's outfit at the end of the movie is one of the most historically accurate 1890s suits I have seen in a movie.

After portraying an early 1870s infantryman for years at various state parks and retiring from the military it is great to see such an outstanding “Indian wars” film that goes into the folks lives and past.

It was sad. At the end of his career or more likely, like a lot of todays special operations servicemen he was used up, and while being only a captain, deemed not suitable for staff or command rank and duty. So the army sent him on a duty where they knew he was disposable to deliver his former adversary to his end along with his family to an unforeseeable future. The ending was uplifting. Peace.

As an indian(from India), I was really in shock from this movie. Until now all the westerns that I grew up watching were either cool or brutal. This was the first time I've ever realised the immense pain and the tragic suffering both the colonisers and the natives had to go through. The movie was so raw, leaves you wondering how messed up human beings can be. North America is sadly built on blood and horror(just like most of the places) Surely this has to be one of the darkests times in human history, it shows our true nature for material gain.

In my opinion it is THE best western of this generation. It’s raw and real and hard to watch which makes it so good. When you feel so many different emotions just watching a movie. I went to college for film and film study and I have been watching big blockbusters since I could remember, this movie hands down stays at the top of my list just because of everything you can pull from it. Emotional acting, not being able to know what's coming next in the plot, the CAST, the writing, the emotional pull, the score, the story itself. I watch thing probably once a month because it's one of if not the top movie that I can sit down and acting feel every emotion and at the end you feel a sense of warmness and satisfaction for how it ends,. The thing is ... All this was normal. You can't be a warrior if you don't have someone to fight and all the tribes males were warriors. So - every now and then - the young men would form a War Party and go looking for trouble. They were opportunists. They'd come on a situation and make a judgment call - _"Can we take them?"_ If the answer was No - or - Yes - but we'll take Casualties - then they'd go somewhere else. If the Answer was Yes -they'd hit them. They'd steal the horses, kill the men, rape the women, and kidnap those women and children they wanted to keep - then kill the rest. They'd bring home the women they had captured - and put their wombs to work making babies for their tribe instead of their enemies. The children - they would raise as their own. The Children either adapted - or were killed. This is what these tribes had been doing to each other for hundreds of years. When the Whites showed up - they were not treated any differently. The Difference was - the Whites could call on the Army. At Little Big Horn - they had a major tribal gathering. They did this periodically to greet old friends and relatives - and so the young people could find romance. Villages were family units - so - no romance in the Village. The Brides would go with their Husbands village - so - these gatherings were a chance for them to see their families again. So - this was a big deal and the Indians did it every now and again. They were put on the Reservations - to try and cut down on the amount of butchery the young men were inflicting on the Whites - but - they'd leave to go to these gatherings. That is what was happening on the Little Big Horn - and that is why the Army was going there to chase them back onto the Reservations. At the Little Big Horn - there were about 6,000 Indians total - men, women and children. There were between 1,000 and 2,500 men of military age. Custer had a total of about 450 men - of whom about 210 died with him. To give some perspective on this fight - at Gettysburg - there were over 70,000 guys - *_ON EACH SIDE_* . So - this was a small engagement. After this fight the Army chased the Indians. An Indian village could move about as fast as the Army could - which made them difficult to catch - but - they couldn't forage. Eventually the Indians got hungry and went back to the Reservation - where they knew the Government would feed them - and it did. Mission Accomplished - the Army went back to their forts. These people - Indians and Whites alike - *_HATED_* each other. Everyone knew someone who had been a victim of one of the other groups. I believe it was Nelson Miles - an Army Commander - who had asked some of the Lakota Chiefs to come to his camp to negotiate. His Crow Scouts - saw these Lakota - and killed them all. You can imagine Miles's frustration. It's popular now - to ignore the Indians Butchery of each other and the Whites - while condemning the American's treatment of the Indians. This is all bull shit. Why do human beings kill each other? Because they can. If you look at the Ancient History of ALL these people - it's been butchery of one by the other since the dawn of time. This movie well reflects the emotions of the participants in all of this. They could be kind to each other - and they could butcher each other - all depending on the circumstances. .

I've studied Western history, particularly the "Indian" Wars, as they're called, for years. This movie is the truth. There were atrocities on *all* sides: whites on Natives, Natives on whites, tribe on tribe, whites on whites. It was a brutal and lawless time and place, and no one's hands are clean. Today, I see so many posts and comments honoring what they believe are the "spiritual," "harmonious with nature" and "mystical" side of the Natives; memes, T-shirts, etc. The different tribes had different beliefs. They all had a spiritual side, of course they did, but above all, they were people, subject to the same emotions and flaws as anyone else. Anyone who laments how they were treated in the past in this country (and it was terrible) really should concern themselves more with how they are treated *now.* The poverty of many reservations is unconscionable in such a rich country. They need and deserve more resources to improve conditions, but they sure as hell don't want *us* to tell them what they need and what they should do with any new resources. And if you're tempted to buy Native themed clothing, art, etc., look into the companies and make sure they are actually Native-owned, not just appropriating the motifs.

Just watched this movie for the first time a couple of days ago. I can’t recommend it enough. We’re told that iron sharpens iron, and this story explicitly makes that point. We’re all on a journey accompanied by all its griefs and struggles, and it is often through those for whom we have the most contempt that we realize and are made aware of our own weaknesses and failures. How one responds to these challenges will ultimately define who that person really is.
