Bale convincingly has the look of a worn out cavalry captain that's seen too many horrible things on the plains in his career. However he's a well-oiled machine in his environment when the bullets start flying that exhibits zero emotion except instincts that have kept him alive through many scraps.

It appears as though Bale fired 9 shots out of his six gun without reloading. Unfortunately Hollywood always seems to overlook these details which would only add more authenticity to an already excellent movie if they would portray the use of these guns properly.

I'm sorry to say that the greed of white men knows no bounds. You might only want access to a few acres for your purposes, old whitey wants thousands of acres and doesn't want to anyone walking on 'his land' Walking never hurt the ground. People will shoot you just because they can. America is a disaster for killing people and, here's the history of it, in recreated drama. Whether or not the characters are real, there's plenty of documented evidence of killing innocent people in the name of the United States of America. Even when natives were given land, it didn't take long for evil people to turn up and abuse them and kill them. Are not the original inhabitants still on reservations. Have they ever been accepted as humans and Americans Will they ever be acknowledged How todays generations can still hold to the history claiming it was justified, is beyond reason

We do recognize the indigenous people. I see them every day in movies and television. HOWEVER, you are a conquered people. You lost the war and lost your lands. I don't agree with how it happened. I think it was a travesty, at best. But the fact remains....your ancestors lost. You should feel fortunate that the government allowed you to stay. Most conquering governments exterminated, expelled or enslaved their victims. Get over it. Get on with your life. Make a life for yourself. How your ancestors chose to handle the opportunities placed before them in is not my fault or yours. My ancestors are not from this country. You don't see me complaining to Scotland about how they were expelled from their lands in Europe. They made a life where they could. This land has inumerable opportunities for everyone. Nobody is going to give it to you though. You have to go get it for yourself... The fact is, the entirety of the USA was populated by native Americans at one time. Do you really think that the US Government will give it back? Do you really want LA or New York or Chicago now that whitey has ruined it? They are not going to give it back, any of it. You'll have to take it....if you can. Or....you can go out and buy a piece of it, like millions of us have done, and be a productive member of society. Not saying you aren't, I don't know your situation. My point is the same as I had to learn for myself and what I told my children: quit whining and get to work. Nobody cares. Nobody is thrilled about having to support you. Go build a life for yourself. Your life is your responsibility alone. 😊😊😊

So many things wrong with this scene... 1. He should have immediately had everyone take cover, point any firearms at the approaching unknowns. There was zero reason to take so many civilian casualties. 2. When I say everyone take cover - that obviously means the main character too. You don't have to be standing in front of each other to talk. Yelling works fine. 3. Why does the landowner keep insisting that they aren't listening to him without any time to see if they're listening to him? 4. The main character should have, would have argued harder. Shooting a bunch of calvary officers is not a path to a long life in freedom, and everyone at the time knew it. 5. It's unclear whether the rider actually has the rights to this land and if so how his rights compare to the value of the paper written by the president. The audience is not lawyers. 6. With their legal position unclear, the shot fired by Ms. Pike escalated a confrontation to a battle. If the courts decide that it was the guys land and that his rights supersede, well, that's murder. Had the riders opened fire first, their position would have been much easier to defend. As it stands, it leaves the moral actions of the main characters very much in question, and I'm not sure that's what the writers intended. 7. I'm not especially literate on firearms, but there are plenty of others commenting about the lack of firearm historical accuracy here.

Anyone who says this is the best Western of all time is forgetting Lonesome Dove ( albeit a miniseries) or The Unforgiven. This is obviously a great Western, but a little too slow and plodding to be considered the absolute best. Bale is undeniably a great actor when you consider some of the roles he had played. From Batman to Burt in Amsterdam to Irving in American Hustle to Dicky in The Fighter ( I believe his best ever role) to Patrick in American Psycho. I think he is this generations' most versatile actor, and he covers his British accent impeccably.

That shootout scene was terrible! If you slow it down and examine it, it's apparent it's all a bunch of random action sequences spliced together. Actors change, guys get blown away then magically reappear, that one dude next to the tree gets shot like a bunch of times and just shrugs it off. Nobody's hitting the deck or anything, but just stands there like deer in the headlights. Come on, indians aren't stupid, especially the kids of a war chief. They're not just gonna stand there like "shoot me plz" like a dumb rabbit or something. Really terrible all the way around! The guy standing next to the tree shoots a full ELEVEN TIMES. Here I though Colt model 1873 held six rounds. Must be a special one. Then at the end, he runs out from behind the tree, and dives behind that log and disappears. Note it's NOT the same guy as the old man, because he fell down behind that log at the beginning of the sequence. How the heck an obese 65 year old man gets shot twice in the chest with .45 LC and gets up and does the 100 yard dash is a mystery as well. That round is about as potent as a mild .44 magnum load. You don't just take two of those to the chest and get up and start dancing around. They might as well have given teh Christian Bale character an uzi and then added a couple terminator robots as supporting roles.

As many have noted, actors did a great job. Cinematography was top notch. Typical Hollywood style, the writing and accuracy was ridiculous. Any experienced soldier with citizens in tow going into a knowingly dangerous situation would never have let all these people stand out in the open toe to toe with the bad guys. As soon as he saw them on the horizon, he would have commanded everyone to take cover where they could, or else lie down in the grass, and point every available weapon at the bad guys as they rode up. They also would have been armed to the teeth. He then would have threatened them with something to this effect: “You see this piece of paper? It is from the President. If anything happens to me or these Indians or this burial site, the entire 9th Calvary will be here to hang all of you and confiscate your land. You get it stupid? Leave now while you still can keep your life and your land.” No shoot out, no civilians dead, but then Hollywood does not get their stupid gunfight where everyone dies.

For Zeus's name......great actors in rediculous scenarios. The Europeans eliminated the natives of this soil and you make fake stories that the Europeans protected the natives??? What a deadly hypothesis.......

The European population in America is declining and will be considered minorities in 2050. Latinos/Hispanics will be the majority and who knows, the real native Americans might get back what is rightfully theirs.

Hold on, so the land owner asks this group to get off his land and they resort to killing the landowner and his sons...even murdering one of them? This group is incredibly criminal, those two military men ought to be court martialed and hanged. The rancher is right...even the president shouldn't have any right to tell him what he can or can't do on his own land. Now I know they do today, but that doesn't make it constitutional and or right. This is a terrible scene.

The ownership and custody of land is a hard responsibility and yet an honored pleasure. This pleasure and duty are owned by the generations that fought and died for it. That being said be careful in how you defend it and who you think you defend it from! The landowner defied the same person that he took the land from then threatened the man that defended his land for years. What I say will probably not sway your ideas or opinions, which I respect and honor. I will say be careful not to judge a person in the conduct of their duty unless you have been put in a similar position. No, the government has no right to tell a citizen what to do with their property, but the citizen has an obligation to respect without kneeling to unburnished and unreasonable requests. to give a part back. FYI the only damn reason that landowner had that land is because of a solider named GRANT, a war called the CIVIL WAR and an agenda that propagated exactly what you are advocating. Point don't piss over a fence when you don't know who is watching or owns the land! Finally, the only damn reason is you have your opinion. is the MILITARY that followed and executed orders of this unpleasant nature is the only damn reason you can talk smack about the execution of their assigned duties. I find it sad when people quote the Constitution but truly don't read what it means, implies, and advocates.

@@guybradshaw7297 Grant was the alcoholic, murderous handmaiden of the tyrant Lincoln, who was willing to butcher any number of people on the altar of federal tyranny and expansionism. Lincoln disregarded and circumvented the Constitution at every opportunity and imprisoned anyone who had the backbone to voice concern and dissent about the butchery and murder he was committing. JWB had the right idea, but his actions came too late to make a difference.

I hate that so many times after these “shoot outs”, the weapons and ammunition are just abandoned where they lie. Despite the fact that the weapons will be needed to finish the”journey “. Plus, there is the monetary value of the weapons and ammo at the time period of these dramas.

I'm just an old movie fan smiling at seeing some dudes I haven't seen in what feels like a good damn minute. I'm absolutely terrible with names but I'm tickled pink and thrilled to see old chief dude (That I know from last of the Mohicans) and the younger, dude. I haven't seen them in forever! Always enjoyed watching those two gentlemen work. Time sure is a trip.
