I remember that night as if it were yesterday. Me and a friend were the ONLY ones waiting in line for the Mind Bender. We were watching the so-called maintenance guy check out the back wheels. I say "so-called" because he was wearing a three piece suit as opposed to coveralls. Anyway, it was a Saturday night and back then the mall had a weekly live music event called rock in the park. That night it was the band Chalk Circle. They had just took the stage and started throwing hanfulls of candy into the crowd. Me and my friend decided to get in on the candy give away and left the line up for the Mind Bender. After scooping up a few candies off the floor my friend said he needed a bathroom break. So I told him to meet me at Aladdin's video arcade after. I was playing a video game called Hyper Olympics when he returned. Shortly there after mall security showed up and quickly rushed everyone out of Fantasy Land. It wasn't until over two hours later at a coffee shop on Stony Plain Road that we heard the news of what happened on the radio. We spent the next three hours staring at each other and shivering over our coffee refills knowing darn well we would have been on the last car if it were not for Chalk Circle throwing out free candy to the crowd. Although I was never a fan of Chalk Circle's music, They are still my favorite band in the world.

While it was a great tragedy, I can understand why WEM would say no to a memorial. It would be rather distressing to have a plaque commemorating the people who died when people want to ride that very same ride.

Since the park is inside a mall, they could put a plaque or bench somewhere else in the mall where it's still public but not a buzzkill for the about to ride the coaster.

I am friends with a lady who's husband was one of the 16 people who were riding on the coaster at the time of the accident. he and his friend were riding in the first car,his friend though wanted to ride in the back car (the one that detached ) but they ended up in the first one. man, talk about the luck of the draw! but he didn't come out totally unscathed though, he had a compressed spine with metal pins all up and down his back. but strangely enough ( I think ) he still loves riding on roller-coasters!

When I was a kid my dad told me about this tragedy (I literally live right beside the mall), because he was actually ON THE RIDE when this happened, I’m legitimately not joking. He was 20 years old and riding on it with his friends in the front carts. After the accident the ride was stopped and they and the other passengers were stuck on the track for about half an hour before they were brought down safely. My dad said he never saw the bodies, but he did see the sheets with the feet sticking out from under them. Chilling, the fact that my own father was on the ride. If he had been in the back carts and died in the accident I wouldn’t even be here

I agree, after 30+ years with no incident I think it’s just common sense for people not to see that as a reason to avoid the coaster. And to add onto it, I learned about the incident long before I was even tall enough to ride the mind bender yet I was just as eager to ride it for the first time.

I’ve lived in Edmonton my whole life and I’ve never heard it called the body bender. However growing up knowing that people died on it almost made it scarier. Like you were defying death by going on it. When I worked at galaxy land in 2003 it was rumored the park still had the old coaster cars in storage somewhere. The story was that right at the end of the ride after it brakes if you look up to your left there’s an upper storage area and you could see them. There definitely were some yellow cars up there but who knows when they’re from. The owners of the mall don’t give two shits about their employees or their guests which is why they won’t put up a memorial. EVERYONE knows about the mind bender accident so I doubt it would scare people away. The ghermezians are just vile people. When they were planning a park visit it was HELL for us. We had to scrub every inch of the park on our hands and knees almost. You’d get booked for a cleaning shift. Ugh. The people who work in the park certainly respect the memory of those who died in the accident though. Nobody screwed around when working the mind bender

I have been on the Mindbender annually since 1987 (even backwards on the last car). In 2012, there was a yellow X and yellow square painted on the ground right where the covered body(s) are seen at 2:30. I took a picture of it, since it was not there prior to 2012, and was quite an odd thing for someone to do. They were removed when I returned in 2013... I would agree a memorial for those who died on the Mindbender could be done in good taste. Not necessarily at the entrance or exit to the ride, but maybe off to the side near Exit 10. Three people died in the Tidal Wave pool (aka grave pool) at Action Park, and I never noticed any memorial plaque there either. Amusement/theme parks just don't like public reminders of this type of notoriety, although the name 'Action Park' became synonymous with hurting and killing visitors, which seemed to make it even more popular, because it is hard core extreme.

Yes, in Vernon, NJ. About an hour northwest of NYC. I was at Action Park in 1980, 2014 and 2015 - a total of seven times. I lived! But it is normal to leave the park limping with cuts, scrapes and bruises if you had a fun day, because it is extreme.

Mainly (in my mind) was it was a bit expensive for my wallet, and we had ridden twice in the previous year or 2 I recall. I really wanted to do the Drop-of-Doom, but my older Brother Ken, didn’t. After the tragedy, the mall added a solid shoulder restraint system. That accompanied the original designed seat-belt and knee-bar. The shoulder restraint was a red-color padded device, with secure rectangular shafts, that crunched you down in your seat. Fun. 🤔

That sucks for the guy who survived the crash. Not only did he get so badly hurt that will probably stay with him for the rest of his life , that his friend and two others died while he survived so that would probably bring a massive amount of survivors guilt that would come from that but also the ptsd that he’s experiencing as wel on a daily basis not just for being in the wreck it self but also for the sure fact that he most certainly witnessed his friend and two others dying right in front of him.

I love roller-coasters and will ride them endlessly at 6 flags. I recently road the mindbender and it was one of the best I've been on, but it was so tight and cramped and jarring I'll probably never go on it again. I had to go to the chiropractor as my neck was severely out. Kind of disappointing.

How can it be "the best you've been on" but at the same "kind of disappointing"? Are you stupid or something?
@Leggir
@Leggir 6 жыл бұрын
@@LokiDaElf Nope not stupid. It's the realization that something entertaining can be done terribly at the same time. For example I may praise the build quality of an iPhone, but hate the user experience. The same was true of the Batman rollercoaster. The one only time I rode it was 45 degrees C and we had to wait inside the batcave which for some reason had no A/C and made the overall experience terrible. The Mindbender was similar, I truly enjoyed the thrill of the speed, tight loops, and echoes. The thrill was hampered because of my knees being extremely soar (maybe riding solo would allow me to sit at an angle, but hips to knees where wedged in super tight), the shoulder restraints were probably too low as I remember dropping my shoulders just prior to the ride guy pushing it down, and then the jarring side to side movement. If I could take the car from another rollercoaster and ride it again, I'm sure it'd be a great overall experience.

The cause of this incident was not neglect or lack of maintenance whatsoever. It has been well documented exactly what the issues were. Problems with the track gauge and wheel designs were to blame. There was no detectable way for maintenance to find the fault. The errors were in communication in the design and manufacturing. The mall was not to blame.

THIS REMINDS ME OF THE MUSICAL RTC. I wonder if RTC is based off this, since in RTC(Ride The Cyclone) is about 6 teens who die on a Rollercoaster in canada at the loop de loop. I like that the opening sing to RTC(ignoring dream of life) shows the characters emotions "We're just sailing through space, with no up or down. And you feel a little strange, but it's more than spinning round. It's everything you loved, and it's everything you've dreamed.. and everything you feared, and everything that seemed so oh, so terrifying.."

The accident was most likely a design flaw from the manufacturer. A similar accident happened on a roller coaster in Mexico last year. That coaster was made by the same manufacture with similar statistics and had the same ride cars with the same original wheel bogies as pre-accident mindbender.

I'm 12 and 5'4" and I rode this two weeks ago with my 6-month younger cousin. She told me I "had" to ride it with her. I told her I'd think about it. We ate a bit after and then I FINALLY said I would. Then she told me, "I can't go on that now. I'm gonna puke if I go on that thing.". We still rode it, but I closed my eyes most of the time and she didn't end up puking. The first drop made me feel like the cart was gonna fly off the track. I still don't understand how the cart stays on the track. (Especially the loops)
@joshforresta
@joshforresta 7 жыл бұрын
The track sides are kind of round as you can see and the wheels or rollers on the actual cart go on top, underneath, and on the side of the track so when upside down even in a stopped position liked what happened in this crash, and there is no G-force acting to push the cart into the loop or track, there is wheels on top and all around to keep it on.

“To this day, the cause of the accident remains undetermined.” This is actually untrue! Contrary to what the mall claims the design was also not the cause of the accident either. A commenter on a more recent video went into detail about how a crucial feature insisted on by the expert German coaster designer of this ride went unimplemented during its manufacturing. On curved parts of the track, the distance between the rails should have been decreased to accommodate enough room for the wheels to pivot properly in place. The manufacturers however ignored him and instead made the distance between the track’s rails the same throughout. As a result the wheels would be forced outward on turns. The excessive stress caused cracks to form on each of the mounted wheel assemblies over time, and as we know, eventually the bolts on the last car’s wheels became loose. Coupled with the deliberate manufacturing flaw that caused the fatality was the complete lack of maintenance by the ride operators. A thorough inspection following the rattling noise that was heard during checks could have easily revealed the damage on all the wheel assemblies.

difference is that was in 1986, they didn't have fancy restraints back then. Lots of coasters only had lap bars in the 80's, but now you have to have over the shoulder and buckles depending on loops and speed.
