I used to see Jack as a guest on variety and talk shows. He was always so charming. Whenever he was on any show, like Columbo, I always watched. He played the best villains. It’s a shame he was an alcoholic and passed that trait on to David. Shirley married Marty Engels and they actually separated a few times, but they always got back together. His personality would get on Shirley’s nerves sometimes. David actually with all his success was quite a lonely misunderstood and lost soul. There’s a movie about his life I saw years ago. It addresses all the jealousy of his father, extreme isolation and loneliness. May they all rest in peace.

She always said when Jack was good he was the best bit he had episodes where he was a different person and Yes he was Jealous of his son and his talent but cursing him solves nothing . I am sorry for David and Shirley and the first wife and even to a limited degree for Jack but the ‘bottom line’ is that eventually, someone MUST leave if things are ever to ‘get better’! My Dad was an alcoholic and could be a ‘mean drunk’ on occasion. Not always but sometimes... That was why Mom loaded my sisters and I into the car and LEFT! It was February and I was about 2 months before my 9th Birthday. We were ‘stationed’ at Loring AFB in Northern Maine... Did I mention it was February? And it was Winter! We left with snow on the ground everywhere and the days were gray and it was cold. We drove for a couple of days and slowly it began to ‘lighten’... we saw sunlight on the afternoon of the 3rd day. By the 4th day, we began to see green grass and blue skies and trees with leaves... Late in the afternoon on the 5th day, we ‘pulled up in front’ of Nannie & Pappy’s House... It took us 5 days to drive from Northern Maine to South Central Florida. In 5 days we went from cold and gray and snow (sometimes white but not always) to green grass and green trees and warm blue skies... All it takes to escape a person (or a ‘relationship’) like that is the will to ‘pack up and leave!

I do NOT excuse his behavior but yea, I can still find a small amount of sympathy for him because... well, because it was mentioned that he was ALSO the victim of abuse... it is unfortunate but abusers are MADE (not just born)! Women of her generation were supposed to "stand by your man" regardless of abuse. Some women are attracted to "bad boys", thinking they could change them, in reality those "bad boys" don't always change unless they are willing to change. Jack was not husband material and took his frustrations on his wives and son David. Shirley and David were truly victims; they certainly didn't ask for the Partridge Family to become a hit as it did and were more well-known while Jack was making TV appearances such as Columbo. Trivia: Did you know the Partridge Family was based on the Cowsills? The Cowsill children faced their own nightmare with an abusive manager father, who not only beat their mother Barbara, but took all their hard-earned money. The Cowsills were supposed to have been the stars of the sitcom, but due to excessive demands from their manager father, the producers decided to cast actors and made the mother a widower. There is a documentary titled "Family Band" that tells their story. Basically, there were some parallels between the sitcom and their real-life counterparts.

Unless he was so out of it, he dropped the lit one, then took another unlit one out. He was always careless with the cigarettes. You can see it in the "This is your life, Shirley Jones", where he has one behind his back, nearly on his clothing, then he almost burns Suzanne Crough in the back with it. David was longing for his father´s love until he died of organ failure.David and his father had similar problems, which David predominantly repeated.On the other hand they both had this bright shining attractive charisma.Their fans certainly won´t forget it ! We would have wished them better.

There’s no excuse for abusing your child and wife. Period. There’s no excuse for being jealous either. I have no respect for Jack Cassidy at all. While David was sadly an alcoholic, it should be pointed out that at the end he probably had Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome (WKS), also called alcohol dementia that occurs in late stage alcoholism. A really tragic end for such a talented man. David was a far better father and did not continue to perpetuate the abuse his father inflicted on him.

The part about Jack physically abusing David and Evelyn was new to me. So tragic. I honestly never liked Jack, but he was a brilliant actor. He seemed to be type cast in his roles as the bad guy it would appear. Jack was verbally abusive to both David & Shirley not physically. He didn't like David being more popular than he was. And Shirley was more popular. Shirley stayed way too long with Jack. As soon as the show ended so did the Marriage. I think it started off with Jacks dad. From Jacks dad to Jack. But David changed that. He didn't want to be like his dad. And when Beau was born he changed that. He was a loving dad to Beau.

It sounds like she was dominated by Jack even to the point of doing threesomes to please him-ugh!

Shirley married Jack in the early fifties, a time when many women were trained to take the words "obey" literally. Frankly its amazing that she had a therapist and under her guidance sought to try to find a way to compromise. You have to give her credit for trying to make her marriage work... she took those vows seriously. It's only recently that our nation has come out and admitted abuse. Before then many women like Shirley supported the idea of male dominence.Many still do. It's also important to remember that Jack and Davids relationship was already cemented into behaviors that would last a lifetime for both of them. This is not something an outsider could change.

The sad part is how patents express their dissatisfaction with their children. You can be disproving without being critical, and still raise your child to be satisfied with the choices theyve made for themselves. The narrator said about Jack that he had developed some substance abuse habits that included alcohol. I'd like to know what the other substances were, because it would help to explain the depths to which he had fallen. At least to me. QUESTION: Were David's brothers physically and emotionally abused as well? Separately, how did they all feel about Jack, in all aspects, detailed, if known at all. Thank you greatly.
@Dan.d64911 ай бұрын
It's quite shocking to say the least. However, I did hear about that David's father had some psychological problems but I didn't know that he was abusive. This is a terrible story to just learn about, as I am a big fan of David Cassidy and the Partridge Family. I believe that Shirley Jones, who I like also, didn't know the whole thing about it. It's a total shame to know that David had a negative upbringing into his life from childhood. While not ever knowing what his nasty dad did to him, that just sickens me to the core. When Shirley got to be with his dad, she didn't get to know how twisted he really was with all the troubles he brought fourth to his son. David didn't deserve any of this, but his life came into showing off his own talent to the public, with music as a performer, songwriter and an actor. He attempted to turn his own life around with what he had, and he became very famous. People loved and appreciated him so much. The David Cassidy, with Shirley Jones we all know and admire in the Partridge Family program to this day, has at least been recognized as amazing in his own right. Even though his dad experienced family troubles of his own before David, it wasn't fair to what David had gone through at the time while growing up. I'm very upset for David Cassidy, because he didn't deserve this at all. Later in life, this poor man suffered a lot of hardships in life because of a broken and twisted childhood. People however, and including myself, loved him for who he was, and that was an icon, and an extremely gifted entertainer. Kudos to you David, and thank you!!
