Lost hiker dog in the vicinity of Walnut Mtn. Shelter and Lemon gap NC near Hot Springs, Max Patch, Newport Tenn. Last seen on trail 3.18.24 Please help her mom Bright Eyes find her. You can help by being boots on the ground searching, providing resupply for Bright Eyes, battery power, Thermal or other Drone flights, rides to town or on the roads looking for her, flyers at local trail heads etc. Contact via text Bright Eyes 406-261-5544

A friend of mine said....if your dog gets away from you while hunting or hiking, just spit every few feet as you are walking to add more of your sent to the ground so they can follow it to you. Makes sense. I know you can hang clothing...socks,shirts etc. So the dog can pick up you sent carried by the wind(kind of like a food bag does for bears). Keep us posted. So sorry .

Tell her to STOP searching and set up a camp near where the dog was last seen and stay stationary. As suggested above can leave scent markers out from that main location. Especially with an older dog. They find their way back by scent and the more you search the more scent the owner leaves the more confused the dog becomes. I know it sounds weird but it can work. It may take several days for the dog to sort out the scent trails so the owner will have to make that decision on how long to stay. Last year a jack Russell got lose a a dog show with a racing muzzle in place. She came back 18 hrs later to a spot where her owner had handled some equipment and left one of his shirts. By then she was exhausted and hungry and easy to catch with a handful of treats. Other folks can search outbound in a grid or radius always coming back to home base. Have heard this worked in an urban setting as well but took a week because the owner kept looking and leaving extensive confusing scent trails. They sat in their car 24 hrs a day in the parking lot at the vets office where the dog got off leash. Good luck. Let us know what happens

Yessss this ... experienced working with dog rescues... setting up a point with the owners scent in one place is what to do. I know good hearted ppl want to go look, but just as said above, this will confuse the scent for a dog.... they will keep walking and walking trying to find her. I already messaged her to set up 2 to 3 spots (being they were already hiking on the AT) and wait, go back and ck them every few hours...... Best advice..... Praying

I live nearby (Greeneville TN) and have a very capable SAR drone with thermal sensor. BUT flying within the AT corridor is prohibited unless you have written permission from the NPS superintendent. $5000 fine and 6 months jail time for a violation can be assessed.

@AllenTweed The AT corridor is only 500' wide on either side of the trail. Shouldn't be an issue to launch outside that. Fly over is permissible, just not landing and take off.

@@Ramdinohikes you might want to re-read the language. As a part 107 FAA certificate holder, no real drone pilot will fly there. They could lose their certificate. The NPS document says "prohibited". Best wishes to all involved.

The FFA controls the airspace, not the ATC just doesn't take off or land, or operate inside the A T corridor.

@@yukonrasputon8314 Yes, I agree. But I've hiked that area, it's very rugged. If the corridor is 500 ft on each side, how are you going to stay within VLOS of the drone? A real 107 pilot won't fly there. I've dealt with NPS officials. When it comes to drones, they do not have a sense of humor. Also the 1000 ft width is an average. So you really don't know where the boundary is most of the time. Trust me, they do not want a drone flying over NPS land especially for a trail dog. If you don't believe me, call them! If you get a signed permission slip from the superintendent, I'll go fly the mission. If it were a lost kid they still wouldn't want someone like me to fly there even though I have 1000s of stick time with a drone. Do you have a part 107 certificate? If so, go fly the mission. Lastly, the probability of finding the dog is near zero unless it is right on the trail. In that case he will be found by another hiker. The bubble is going through that area now. He is a very small needle in a very big haystack. For every half mile radius, there is 500 acres to search. If you fly a mile off trail that's 2000 acres. As much as I'd like the dog to be found, a drone isn't a very good tool. Chances are that if he is found, it will be by another hiker or will show up on someone's back porch.

Maybe the hiker community can request that pet owners get an Air Tag. Even people who run into medical emergencies, like Frank Doty would benefit. It would be easier to find pets & people in the hiker community.

A quick search on KZbin will show that the air tags are not reliable at all especially if the software in the phone is old, even if it was updated. I-phone update 6 did not work at all I-phone 11 did not work either. very unreliable.@Navy1977

Poor dog. With a pack and inexperience it doesn't have much chance with a wild predator. Hopefully, she just is hanging around with some other hiker. Good Luck, Rick

Sadie is the most experienced hiking dog on Earth. Sadie can walk any human into the ground. She is close to becoming one of the few dogs to ever complete the 8000 mile triple crown. Anybody who is in the area, please help find Sadie. -Nightshift

No dogs on trails city people, leave them at home. This is not a casual ,30 minute walk in your local dog park. Wow. Put gps on your dog if you must.

Sadie was born in remote Alaska. She has hiked over 10K miles of remote trails and wild wilderness areas with her person. She is less than 300 miles from finishing the Triple Crown. This is no city dog.

Except dogs can't triple crown... Or tech thru hike because they aren't allowed on all parts of the crown trails... So no... This dog isn't 300 miles from its triple crown... And it should have been left home.. just because a dog can walk the trail doesn't mean it should. Just because it's wagging its tail doesn't mean it's happy.. it's a dog... It will act happy around it's owner regardless... Be better pet owners and leave your dogs home for thrus.
