@@thegoldenkobefamily It wouldn't matter much with the retriever but Dobermans are often territorial and may resent unknown dogs or people on their territory. Fortunately this dog wasn't, and has clearly been trained to socialize well with other dogs.
@litcheerose2 ай бұрын
However, it's an error to hold the bigger dog by the collar. If you trust him, you don't need to do that. And by holding him this way, you are preventing the dogs from meeting properly by sniffing and going around each other. By putting them muzzle to muzzle and exerting traction on the bigger dog, you are actually creating a combat situation. If you want the meeting to go as well as possible, you must let each dog move freely, and don't worry about the bigger dog "coming on too strong". It's normal for the puppy to be a bit scared (or even a lot scared), but the puppy will soon realize that there's no need to be, whereas you are opening the possibility for agression by holding the other dog by the collar.
@PAWGmoth2 ай бұрын
@@litcheerose this is a massive simplification of the initial meeting process and it is not good advice for every situation. In many scenarios I would agree with you, but introducing a small rescue dog in a non-neutral ground, with both owners present, makes the likelihood for a negative initial meeting much higher than situations where your advice is accurate. With really frightened rescue animals you need to cater to them much more than you would others. Ensuring personal space while they’re initially overwhelmed is super important to let the lil guy know that this is his friend. I’ve worked with a lot of animal shelters and no one I’ve ever worked with would recommend introducing an anxious rescue dog without holding the collar or leash of the non-rescue.

I disagree. Being fostered and bonding with new humans and siblings only to taken from that environment and forced somewhere new, is one of the most traumatic experiences for an already traumatized animal. The animal has already been abandoned once and are being abandoned again by who they just formed loving bonds with. The animal will be less likely to fully trust any situation in the future the more the animal exchanges hands. Especially if the next family decides having a animal in their home is too much and wants to get rid of them. One of the other comments came from someone who called themselves Alfie and stated this couple picked rusa up from their home. So rusa has already been passed from home to home several times... it's no wonder she is traumatized so much, she thinks just when someone loves her, she is taken away from that environment and put somewhere else. It's not heartwarming, it's sad.
@SneakySnek_224 ай бұрын
@@Az_N.S.O.L. Thank you very much for your input. I completely understand where you are coming from, as I have volunteered with a lot of animals with abandonment issues. I will say I've mainly worked with cats, but I have had some dog experience as well. However, I think part of why fostering can be a good solution is to help teach some of the social skills so that they don't get abandoned again. If she gets used to other dogs, that means that more families with other animals know that she is safe around their current dogs. They can also attempt to help with training and if she had any behavioral issues. So while yes the shift from foster care to a new home will be difficult and sad, I think the pros outweigh the cons imo. But it's good to keep the abandonment trauma in mind with how to proceed, so thank you for your comment

Wonderful!!! My Wife and I have been married for 44 years (45 in November) and ALL our furry members of our family have been rescues. At one stage we had 7 cats and 3 dogs all vying for a piece of our bed at night. I have held and loved each and every one of them for their last breath. We grieve together, we cry together. I'm nearly 70 and we have 2 cats and 2 dogs as well as about 100 birds. One of our dogs is very old, close to 20 and the other is nearly 2. and our 2 cats came from horrendous treatment, one was thrown to hunting dogs for their training, the other was routinely thrown from a 1st floor balcony just for fun. We wish you well, send our heartfelt best wishes to you all the very best for your future together. Thank you for caring for you new fur baby. Cheers from downunder

You hear of so many adoptive families returning the dog to the shelter because they didn’t fit in with the family or whatever lame excuse that really means we couldn’t be bothered trying. I hope you weed out those people and find her a lovely family that appreciates her.😊

I'm amazed at how great you both are with the dogs! It appears as though all 3 get along very well, and they welcomed her in a positive way. Hope you can give Rusa the home she is fortunate to have and deserves. What an adorable pup!.

Amazing improvement on the terrified and guarded puppy, and the friendship these three bonded. It was very beautiful to watch them.

Soooo very sweet. Ruso is a cute little puppy that anyone would love to adopt and give her a loving forever home. God bless you for taking Ruso into your home and God bless the two dogs that taught her to play and transformed Ruso into a sweet little doggie who loves to play and have fun. ❤

This is just what I needed today. In California, family members lost 4 homes in 1 fire yesterday. Dogs make everything better.

My parents’ house recently caught fire too. Due to the age of the house and the health issues that were exposed afterwards, we decided to tear down the house and rebuild. Everyone made it out safely, including the dog. Unfortunately, the dog was sick and we didn’t know it. The fire made her worse and she stopped eating and responding to us. We made the decision to put her down and then we started losing more of our possessions. Fortunately, we have all the family heirlooms, the needlepoints my aunts made, my grandfather’s handmade carvings, and all my grandmother’s handmade quilts. The cause of the fire was a lightning strike hitting the power pole in the backyard and the ensuing fireball hit the roof. My parents have secured housing for one year and the insurance paid for it. We appreciate your prayers. Thanks!! 😊 Rest in peace Cocoa!! 😭🥀
