Many people have a negative opinion of running - thinking it's boring or dull. A lot of this, I think, comes from the approach. If you run the same route around your neighbourhood everyday, then of course it's going to start to get old!
Trail running means running somewhere off-road. Often, that means running somewhere scenic. It also, as a byproduct, usually means forgetting about times and distance. It's all about experiencing the place you're in.
Trail running is thus much more enjoyable than running on pavements and roads. And it's actually much easier to get into than you might think.
And even if you don't have anywhere scenic to run, just running off road will provide a whole host of benefits that will improve everything from stability, to mobility, to cardio, to weight loss, to balance, and more.
What do you guys think? Is trail running vastly under-rated?

Another variation of trail running that I do is trail sprinting. Where I hide in a bush and whenever someone passes by, I jump out and sprint at them. It's also known as trail chasing. Hope you guys give it a try!

One more piece of advice: increase your cadence when you get to technical terrain. Whether it's loose-downhill or roots'n'rocks, quick-stepping like a Boston Dynamics robot means you're not overly invested in any one footfall and can correct with your next step before your momentum is too far gone. Especially in minimalist shoes, you don't want to be heavily stomping on pointy rocks.

After following your content for years and being influenced by your training philosophy is what led me to start taking leaps of faith with my fitness. I've done 9 Spartan races and one Spartan endurance event, multiple other runs and trail runs and even powerlifting and CrossFit comps. Trail running is definitely something I need to work on though, and circumstantially isn't something I get to do much outside of Spartan races. The fact that you are now doing a dedicated video on it just adds all the more fuel to the fire within me 🤣

Love the mental workout that you get from trail running (vice road or track running)--you're constantly thinking about your next step (to avoid roots, rocks, etc.), your pace, your stride (based on grade), etc. YEP, it's the best form of running hands-down!

3:50 A comment about barefoot shoes. I have always invested in what would be considered high-end shoes and work boots. For my sneakers I’ve always worn Nikes and new balance, and was willing to spend whatever it took to have comfortable ones. For my work boots, I’ve bought everything from Georgia boots, red wing, and any other namebrand you can think of. I’ve easily paid $140-$200 per pair. All of these shoes and boots have lasted well and been relatively comfortable, but I always ended up with foot pain. I’m in my mid 40s and a year ago my wife purchased a pair of barefoot shoes and barefoot work boots for me. It took a week or two to adjust, but I have never had any foot pain since I started wearing them. Just thought I’d put that little plug-in for those who question whether or not barefoot shoes will be comfortable. I definitely recommend giving them a shot, just understand that you need to wear them consistently.

Sometimes now I'll hit a fun section of trail just flying through it feeling like I'm riding a speeder bike from Star Wars. It's fantastic. I can't imagine having to drive 30 mins for a good trail, in Sheffield you can set off running from the city centre and get straight onto trails and into the peak district. If I do drive for 30 mins it's to have a run in literally the middle of the national park. I mention this as a lot of people from elsewhere don't realise how amazing of a place Sheffield is for outdoorsy people

And this is why everyone should have one pair of V-Trail 2.0. The Spyridon was also re-released as the EVO version with the upgraded sole. The V-Alpha is great for trotting in water. Not an affiliate but I wish I was. My cuboid/cuneiforms got smashed so I can't really wear a sole that is any stiffer, not even other zero drop/barefoot; also there is great pain when my toes are confined together so having them be able to move completely independently keeps the pain down and allows me to just grab my pinky toe and kind of decompress and stretch to relax that line of stress across the top and side of my foot. Vibram soles...sure they're a c note for the shoes but having armored supergrip gloves for your feet is pretty necessary once you get used to having them, and the long lasting/durable nature of Vibram outsoles is a bonus. If you can do with other barefoot type shoes, then you can probably buy up to 3 pairs of others to a single pair of Vibrams if you shop well, and having shoes to rotate is always a healthy thing in general if you pick up a running habit.

Have all but exclusively ran on a treadmill, but the last week I have ran two times outside in the forest. Was surprised to find that even if I ran slow, 8 km/h, I had a high pulse and it registered as a speed run. Also noticed it in the calves. Have a lower pulse running at 10 km/h on the mill, and notice it less in the legs. Glad to hear an explanation in this video.

First thanx for all the effort the past number of years to put up all your content. As a runner for the past 33 years the biggest problem new runners make is going out the door and starting to run. New runners should pick a short distance such as a 1/2 mile out then back. Start by walking and when comfortable run at a very easy pace for maybe 100 feet or so, then walk 3 times that distance (300 ft) till your breathing returns then do it again. Never run faster than a pace where you couldn’t talk with someone. Once this routine is easier cut your walking distance back to maybe 200 feet. A week later maybe cut it back to half running and half walking. As you get more comfortable less walking and more distance. Once your feet are moving faster than a walking pace you are running! Time is not important and this is where trail running takes away the fear of going to slow. But also why it is so enjoyable. Get out and enjoy nature as it was meant to be enjoyed.

Great video. I’ve got a bung knee (torn ACL and medial meniscus) and road running is an absolute (painful) punish. The constant repetitive pounding leads to knee pain so I don’t road run anymore. But trail running, thanks to the constant variations doesn’t bother my knee anywhere near as much. And I’m fortunate enough to have great trails just over my back fence. So like you, I’m a big fan of trail running.

I'll have to give it a try, I had a knee ligament injury about a year and a half ago and I've not been able to properly run on pavement since.

Great video and echo the sentiments entirely. There is something amazing about being about to run over woods and hill ranges without too much thought.
