How about adding spacers to the fork to make it more "progressive?"
@TrailBreaker5 жыл бұрын
Patrick Terhune It’s funny you mentioned that! After watching the video of the fork travel for this video, I noticed how much travel I’m using. The fork is stock right now. I’m going to add spacers next week to see how it feels. I’m happy with the sag (about 25%) up front. Set up order has been 1. sag, 2. compression, 3. rebound and 4. progression . Thanks👊🏻

That suspension is tuned so beautifully. Rebound speed is perfect.

I did this today, experimented with extreme ends of the rebound. The trails here in Southern California are full of loose rocks and big rocks. I really liked the fully slow rebound to eat up and absorb the rocks. The fully fast rebound made the bike feel faster and somewhat easier to pedal, though I could feel all the rocks more. I feel like I can now somewhat look at a trail or section and understand what setting might work for rebound. Thanks for sharing this wonderful idea. You’re absolutely right- I hadn’t touched those at all since I got the bike! Tip: I made note of the settings before I changed anything with rebound, so I can revert to the original feel of the bike which I had grown accustomed to. I did this by counting the number of clicks to one extreme and making note of that. So I can get back to that setting if I want.

Thanks for the tip! I'm glad you liked the idea enough to give it a try. You paid $$$ for that suspension so get the most out of it😀👊

Funny I found this video today! I just tried full slow rebound on my suspension setup yesterday and found on my gnarly Adirondack NY trails- especially on the DH, the really dampened rebound felt like I was floating more, sucking up the big hits and just in better control. Great video! Thanks!

Tried this unintentionally yesterday. Hitting jumps on one of my bikes, i noticed that the bike was getting bucked like crazy. I adjust the rebound, and voila it made it so much better.

Going for a ride today. Going to try this comparison myself, and then maybe I can figure out what settings I really like/want. Good content, good subject, good edit. I appreciate the information presented. 👍👊

Thanks! Playing around in the middle never really helped me get a feel for tuning. Going full fast and slow is really eye opening😊

Do you tinker with suspension settings or are you a "set and forget" type?
@brewkeepyr46475 жыл бұрын
I've been a 'set and forget type' but this makes me curious to experiment as well. A recent weakness I'm pushing through is exactly what you mentioned; hitting a berm/turn after a jump and feeling I need more control. I have liked a fast rebound. Fyi I'm on a Stache 7 (my all purpose do it all whip) with a Yari. I increased the travel from 120 to 130 so I can tackle bigger jumps, drops and hits. Trail Breaker, your channel is quickly becoming one of my favorites. By the way, I'll be 51 in a month lol

John Kinney Man, your encouragement means a lot! Thanks! I’ve also been fairly lazy with suspension which is why I tried this. Super slow was crazy feeling in rough stuff but very sluggish if trying to pump or pop. You’ve probably seen my Stache vids and know how much I love the versatility of it. Soooo fun👍👊

I hadn’t changed anything until I saw this video, so thanks. I’ll be experimenting more. I ride a Scott Spark, which has a handy lever on the handlebar for suspension lockout on the fly. Now I wish there was another handlebar lever for rebound control!

turn toward the turtle and not the rabbit😀

So hows better when the terrain has many bumpers ,slow or fast?
@TrailBreaker4 жыл бұрын
It depends on your riding style. Try the extremes like in the video so you'll really feel the effect. Then move to the middle and try it. I experiment with faster until it feels out of control then a click or two slower and ride that a while. If you're newer to MTB, slower will feel safer on really bumpy trails.

Why would you not show turning clockwise for high speed or slow
@TrailBreaker5 жыл бұрын
I did do a run with the rebound knob full clockwise (fully-damped...really slow) and a run full counter-clockwise (zero rebound damping...crazy fast. It can be confusing😀
I don’t get it what is slow and fast rebound every other bike is just “rebound” there is no slow and fast!
@TrailBreaker4 жыл бұрын
Sorry if I was confusing. It's just one knob which can be adjusted all the way closed (clockwise) which makes the fork or shock return very slowly after a hit OR all the way open (counter clockwise) which makes it return crazy fast. I just compared these 2 extreme settings. I actually run them about in the middle.
@willshawyer72804 жыл бұрын
Trail Breaker you weren’t confusing u just don’t understand it, good video anyway!
@TrailBreaker4 жыл бұрын
I'm glad you like it. I do understand it. I'm just not sure I understand your question. When you ask about fast and slow rebound, are you asking about "low speed rebound" and "high speed rebound"? Because these are separate adjustments available on only really high end, highly adjustable suspension systems. They separately control how quickly the suspension rebounds from low shaft speed compressions (pumping, cornering and pedaling) and high shaft speeds (big huck to flat or landing a big jump). Another confusing semantic is the rebound setting itself. You're NOT setting the rebound, you're setting the rebound DAMPING. Minimal rebound damping is full counter-clockwise and therefore "fast rebound." Maximum rebound damping is full clockwise and therefore "slow rebound." The premise of this comparison was contrasting that one knob set to the two opposite extremes to see the change in ride quality; One set to rebound quickly and one set to rebound very slowly. Did you notice the little pictures of a rabbit in one direction and a turtle in the other on the fork or shock? To answer your original question...THAT is the slow and fast.
@willshawyer72804 жыл бұрын
Trail Breaker oops I’m so sorry I meant I don’t understand it. I’m sure You do haha! My rear shock is a fox x2 and it was driving me bonkers as I didn’t understand the high and low speed rebound. But don’t worry we took it to the bike shop and it’s all sorted now

I’ve finally got a shock pump to play around with mine. I mainly just use my xc mtb as an exercise machine on paved bike paths with the occasional visit to the park and trail. I don’t like to drive to the trail - I prefer to just get out and bike. Currently my max recorded speed is 30.2 mph but I seem to hover more around a max of 28mph. I’m fiddling with my fork adjustments and wheel pressures (tubeless) to see if I can get constant max speeds of at least a little above 30mph. Reason being that my max at 30mph was with aluminum/tubes and I can’t accept that I paid over the price of the bike to upgrade to carbon/tubeless!
