I went to an oval chainring 2 years ago on my Trek Ex and I can honestly say it is so much more efficient than the round chainring. There are no dead zones in the revolution like there is with a round chainring especially when climbing. You feel engaged the entire revolution. It is much more efficient. Period. I've been riding for 30 years and this is one of those upgrades that makes a huge difference.

I just switched to an oval ring and I'm never going back to the traditional rings! The sensation while climbing was fantastic, no lurching or pedal bob. The rear wheel felt like the traction was better since I wasn't bearing down and torqueing the wheel in spurts. Even on flat ground the difference felt amazing. Great video and comparison, thanks for putting it all together. I'm a little late to the party, but like you, I have a bike that I really like, that I'm converting into a better climber. Just had a local shop change it from its 1x9 DH gearing, to 30Tx11-48T as a 1x10. So now it climbs great. Just stumbled upon a forum with people talking about oval chain rings, and thought that would be a great upgrade, to my new drivetrain. My very first MTB back in '87, when I was in college, was a Jamis Dakota with Shimano's new "Bio-Pace" front chain rings. It was amazing to ride up hill. So here I am, almost 58, and building something that'll climb the local rocky, technical single track and fire roads like a goat, and then come bombing back down. Update: I installed the Absolute Black 30T and it's transformed the bike. Where I used to just be stuck on the 48T, I can now sometimes shift one or two down from there. I'm very happy with the result!

@@TrailBreaker I believe that's the key, the average rider will feel the difference a lot more but someone who is used to put a lot of power all the time probably will have a less noticeable effect. It is hard to describe and I don't want people to expect wonders but in my experience, it has been one of the more noticeable upgrades to my bike so far.

I took it out on the road to go call a customer and I was astounded with the feeling on my pedals. It’s kind of hard to explain. I guess I could explain it to you like a perpetual pump in the gym when you’re working out. Just amazing. Thank you for this video. I’ve told you about everybody. I've riding a oval chainring for about a year now. It was a bit weird at first, but I feel like I was able to climb stuff that I usually wouldn't get through; but not sure if it was just fitness. My bike broke down and I've been riding my wife's bike this last week with 3 (round) chainrings and couldn't get through the same stuff I used to be able to seemingly easily get through on oval. So I've just bought another oval and converting the whole family's bikes to oval. Makes a huge difference. With a transition to one-by drivetrains, seems like a no brainer to use an oval narrow wide.

A long time ago I had the displeasure to ride with Shimano Biopace on my road bike. Biopace offered oval chainrings as well but with a complete different timing, geometry etc. It was not a good experience at all, even causing some knee problems. So when ovals where introduced for MTB's I was a bit sceptical to say the least. About a year ago I bought a new MTB that was equipped with a 2 x 11 drive train. I used it for about three months and then decided to turn it in to a 1 x 11 (freeing up space for a dropper post cable). Pretty easy to do with my Raceface crank and its direct mount. In the mean time I had been reading a lot of resources about modern ovals and decided to try one. I am very pleased with the result. On all the tracks I ride on a regular basis I improved my personal best, sometimes even without really trying. And while the MTB still offers me a great workout I really have more fun doing it.

what you said about "get to a place where you can shift" is very true with oval rings. Your chain is slower per gear during top dead center / bottom dead center when the chain tension is lower. The chain actually has a way better chance to climb up the cassette with an oval ring. They actually reduce your power when your weight is over the pedal, but that tends to help increase your grip during climbs and thus smoothness and confidence.

James McPherson Well said👊🏻
@TrailBreaker4 жыл бұрын
U.S. Constitution 👊🏻
@jamesmcpherson39244 жыл бұрын
@U.S. Constitution While I believe climbing is much easier with oval chainrings, it is not because of leverage. A properly installed oval chainring reduces your leverage in the power stroke thereby smoothing out the transition through the pedal stroke. That evens out the power spikes that would cause your wheel to slip on an edgey climb if you had a round ring. The oval chainring allows you to select a lower gear than you would other wise be able to spin, and keep very consistent maximum speed and grip the whole time. Just trying to help explain a common misconception about why oval chainrings work. Oval trades leverage for smoothness and smooth is fast.

I have been a huge advocate for, first the Rotor RSX system (2001), and then the Ovalized chainrings, since the early-to-mid 00's. I was able to quantify that, while they may not make your pedal stroke actually that much more efficient - what they DO actually do, is provide more instantaneous torque, which makes for more watts when it matters. So it's not more efficient - it just gives you the ability to apply torque more quickly, in the most powerful location on the pedal stroke. Buy a Rotor PM and you'll be able to actually see it in real time (I worked on this back in the old CompuTrainer days with SpinScan). I'd say it's worth - what - 2-3 chain links per entire chain revolution? Not much, but it does add up.
@TrailBreaker4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! That makes sense. No matter how good your stroke is you still apply MOST of your power during 2 small parts of every revolution. I think an oval extends those 2 peaks so they aren't separated by as much.
@rafacabanillasmurillo71102 жыл бұрын
The other day I tried a bike with an 2x oval system and the sensation was amazing. It was super smooth, and I know why. It's because when you take the round chainring, each time your leg goes down, you notice the bum bum bum, on each pedal force. N W *---E-------crank------= S ** The pedaling is clockwise, because this is the right crank. That means, that the crank FALLS faster in those intervals. Here is where you notice that bum, bum, bum, bum, bum, and that the pedaling with a round chainring is not totally round. (Don't criticize me, it's hard to explain by words, just try to imagine more or less what I say). In contrast, with the oval one, you will notice that the crank will feel slower in that interval (from east to south). But in the dead point, (from north to east) the gear is lower (softer). So that means the cranks will go faster in that interval, which is the dead point. This is why you get the round pedaling feeling here. Because in the first interval you don't notice that fast fall of the cranks. And the dead point is reduced. You will feel this specially with the automatic pedals, because if you have an oval chainring, when you go from the position south to west, which is when you pull the automatic pedal upwards, in that interval the oval chainring will soften the gear and you will feel that round pedaling. However, I only tested it one day and at first, it's true. It feels a bit weird. But it feels like you were pedaling on a cloud. I don't know if I explain myself. But you feel it's more efficient. See this video I found to understand everything I explained: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jamkmnasrshgfNk I also have to say that you shouldn't do this in a 2x system because it seems it works but the one and only day I mounted that bike with 2x by system, when I shifted from the small plate to the big one, the chain got stucked in the front derailleur and I had to stop or I would have destroyed the chain and fell.

I switched from a 34 round to 36 oval absolute black and I feel I could maybe even go to 38. 36 oval rode easier than 34 round and gave me an extra top gear for the straightaways. I would say only go to same size oval if you are struggling with the same size round going up hills.

Wasn’t my cup of tea, but I know people who love them.

Trail Breaker from my bike shop I was told it depends on how you pedal and if you use clipless pedals. What I found is trying to pull up on your pedals to use both forces when pedaling works better on round chainrings it if you only push down on your pedals or use flat pedals most people find oval works better. At least that’s from myself and my shops findings and the reason many professionals don’t use oval chainrings except for the becoming more rare mountain bikers who use flat pedals.

But I do have one friend that rides flats that swears by oval but he has a Garbaruk one, which I never heard before him, he stated he bought it instead of Absolute Black only because AB didn’t make a GRX or any 1 by Shimano chainring that would work at the time. Trail Breaker, I've been thinking maybe trying a oval since I've never tired one. I'm older rider in my 60's so I need a little extra help these days on climbs and tech stuff. I went earlier in the year from a low travel trail bike to a more full travel enduro which I love. It's an SCRAM eagle but it has a 32 tooth front round ring. I was thinking maybe a smaller round I did that on my last bike that helped a ton. Do you think I should do oval like 30 or stay 32. Also which one did you try? I've heard the most about absolute black. My bike has a front chain guard now which I doubt will work with an oval one too. Thanks, Wes

I know of others who've been able to still use the chain guide. You might just have to find the sweet spot. On my Kona I was able to swap a 32 for a 32 oval. On my Trek I had to go down to a 30 tooth oval for chain stay clearance. That thing is a beast with a 30t oval and the 50t Eagle cog in back! Go with a 30. You'll loose a few MPH on the top end but I'm not peddling at 25 MPH anyway 😀 You'll love the easy climbing!

I rented a Slash last year and I think it came with an oval. Is that right? For a 33 lb bike I remember it climbing pretty well. Trail Breaker no - I don’t think any production bikes come with an oval ring - the LBS probably built it that way for someone - Bike shops have to build bikes they sell for the masses - not everyone likes oval so they would run the risk of turning off some customers if they came stock with an oval... also cost - stock chainrings are cheap - keeps overal cost of the bike down

Flats. I believe you're thoughts are correct. The benefit is less for highly experienced riders and those clipless.
@DethWshBkr4 жыл бұрын
I don't know if there are really a y "negatives" to the oval, but as a former oval rider gone back to round, I find round to be more efficient. Now, I ride clipless. It is my unprofessional but 25 years of riding experience, that a flat pedal rider will very likely see benefits of the oval, whereas a clipless rider will not As a clipless rider, if I need to accelerate faster, I can "simply" pull up on the one pedal, and push with the other. A flat rider CANNOT do that. The oval will help make your pushing only stroke easier to spool up, but as a clipless rider, I don't need that. So, flat riders - sure, go oval. Clipless riders? Meh. Stay round and keep the more consistent pedal stroke.
@TrailBreaker4 жыл бұрын
I agree 100% I rode clipless for 20 years. I tried my first oval after switching to flats (wanted to push my skills on jumps and drops) and gained a lot of the efficiency (not all) I lost on flat pedals. For me it's the best of both worlds!

Great video, love your enthusiasm. Question... I'm currently using a 32 sprocket and feel like it's not enough on some steep climbs or when I just want to spin up a hill. Oval choices are usually 32 or 30. Would I regret going with a 30 oval? I spend more time in smaller gears than larger ones so figured that was the best choice.
@TrailBreaker4 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Grant! When you say "more time on smaller gears" do you mean climbing? On my Kona, I swapped a 32 round for a 32 oval and it obviously made a big difference for me. On my Trek Fuel I had to go from a 32 round to a 30 oval for clearance with the chainstay. It's a pretty big difference because not only is it oval which makes spinning easier but it's smaller too. I can climb ANYTHING in the granny gear but I have definitely lost some top end peddling downhill. It's ok since I don't race and don't NEED to pedal over 25 mph :-) If you go with a 30, I had to remove 2 links from the chain. Let me know what you decide. Good luck!
@GrantSpoon4 жыл бұрын
@@TrailBreaker so the big difference on your Kona... Elaborate please. Easier on hills? I want gearing where if I'm feeling tired some day I can granny gear spin up short steep sections easily. A 32 oval to me just means I have a longer stride in that bigger gear and less time in the smaller during the stroke. So I'm leaning towards a 30. I mean, I could climb any Hill out of saddle even in third rear gear, but it hurts and I have to get out of saddle. Thanks man.

I’m wondering your thoughts on the following opinion. Keep in mind I have no opinion on round or oval being better than the other. Is it possible there’s more to the fatigue variable that needs to be considered a bit more? (I understand your comments around 10:30 in the video regarding fatigue) What I’m interested in is whether you see the same results with: 1. Ride trail with oval first, wait X* days. 2. Ride trail with round, wait X days. 3. Ride trail with oval, confirm delta from first oval ride. X being whatever you decide could remove the fatigue variable. Then, just repeat the same test above substituting round first and confirming round delta. …or maybe I’m just reading into possible fatigue variations way too much. I haven’t tried an oval chain ring, so I’m new to this concept. Either way, excellent video. I appreciate your attention to detail in the videos I’ve seen so far. Keep up the good work!

@TrailBreaker4 жыл бұрын
Brodie, I was on flats. I think the consensus is that if you're more experienced and accustomed to riding clipped in your perceived benefit with the oval may be less. What bike came with oval, BTW? My unsolicited advice, since you've been away from MTB for a while, is to throw some good flat pedals on that bike (Race Face chesters and One Up make good affordable pedals that I will probably always run) and some 5.10 freerider flat shoes for at least a few months. Get really comfortable with bike handling and cornering in loose dirt. After that, if you really miss the connected feeling, clip away and crush us all😀👊

I picked up a used Stache 9.8 that came with an absolute black oval ring. Went straight to SPD since clipping/unclipping isn’t an issue really. I can’t say I notice the oval on the trail (again, baseline comparison is nonexistent) but I do on the commute to the trail with a noticeable “bobbing” in my cadence. I’ll likely stick with the oval for now and try out a round after I get my tires under me a little better. I had a hunch the oval would really improve flat pedal riding I could totally see it working they way. Ride on!

Not knocking, as I run ovals, but I think the time differences would not be as great if you used the same actual effort. Not scientific enough

Perceived effort. Yeah, I’m no scientist 😊 I did try to keep both runs as equal in as many ways as I could. Everyone can ride a round but some will not like the feel of an oval especially if they ride clipless pedals. A vast majority of road riders use clipless so the benefit of oval is up to debate. On MTB, pedaling style determines whether you like oval or not. Round is always a safe bet 👊🏻
