I agree with you. One of the most capable off road vehicles in the world is the Mercedes G wagon. 3 factory lockers, horsepower for days, high clearance, good handling. Yet 99.9999% of them are mall crawlers. Why shouldn't they be? I wouldn't want to damage my 100K toy either. Get a 5000$ used jeep then beat it like it owes you money.

A Jeep is an off-road vehicle if you can’t go and don’t want to go off-road maybe you should buy a street car like a Ford, Chevy, Dodge, Honda, etc. If you want to have a vehicle that can take the top off buy a convertible, there are many convertibles the same price if not cheaper then a Wrangler. Don’t think I’m trying to say that you have to go off-road if you have a Jeep, it is really cool to be able to take the top off in 40 minutes to an hour. I’m just saying it would be cheaper to invest a street vehicle not made for harsh environments. I love my Jeeps and they’re great for street use.

i know this is an old vid but just came across it. i like this channel in general but i am disappointed to see the Dana 30 hate just to maybe sell a 44 or two off his site. It's ridiculous. A modern (post 2012) 27 spline Dana 30 is absolutely fine for 35s. Not merely "acceptable" etc., but stout and trail worthy. If you have a Rubi or Willys with the 44s front and back great. But if you don't, and you don't live in Moab lol, then the only reason to drop the absurd amount of money on going to the 44 (with it's added weight) is if you're running 39+ and need to go to 5.38 at the diff. The 30 tops out at 5.13.
@thepurpurite
@thepurpurite Ай бұрын
@@oldgrunt5569 Not only that, the JLs are M186s which were previously known as D30s, and are beefed up and stronger from the factory than older D30s. The strength of them is more comparable to a D35. M210s and M220s are great, but most people don't have $6g to drop on two used axles and all new gears.Most Wrangler owners are driving them mostly on the street, so crapping on an M186/D30 is low rent.

@@GDLutz I agree. They say work smarter, not harder. I translate to wheel smarter, not harder. I got a lunchbox in my D30, under a 2000 XJ on 5" lift and 35's. When I had to meet the wife at the mall today so I could try on some boots (I hate new boots, nobody ever has a size 14) and I had to give her the debit card, who doesn't hate that? Thank you for stating how important it is to have the proper tire and wheel set up for off roading (as well as towing/hauling), and not just have a 20-24 inch wheel and some rubber bands on them. One thing I didn't hear you talk about was having wheels that are wider than the tire is, and how that is unsafe/dangerous. You did show some like that though.

As someone that goes off-roading quite a bit it disappoints me when my fellow Jeep folks view Jeeps as off-road only vehicles. Giving no value to a Jeep that is built for the road, or built for cruising. I grew up in parking lots looking at cruising classics and drag strips with muscle cars as much as I did a dirt trail. It honestly wasn’t until the early 2000’s that I really saw anyone in a Jeep take off-roading seriously. Until then it was classic pickups with a 6” lift and good mud tires. Maybe ease up the next time you think the only value to a persons Jeep is used on an off-road trail. If it’s someone else’s car, it doesn’t have any value to you anyway.

My dad used to run a hp Dana 30 on his xj with 35s and 4.56 gears and it ran perfectly fine until he sold the jeep. Keep in mind that the Dana 44 in the front of jk’s have the same weak outers as the Dana 30 so they’re only marginally stronger. Most of the damage I see from Dana 30 axles are in the knuckles and not the ring and pinion. If you’re swapping out for a Dana 44, get a true Dana 44 or just go 1-tons

I'm doing mostly stock on a 2014 - got a cheep angry eye grill for the daughter, and some multicolor halo headlights that shine into everyone's cabin as I'm cruising down the road (everyone hates me at night). That said, I've done some climbing, but that's not mostly my thing. Basically, I take it into the woods, hit the mud bogs and the tight trees hard, and take it off road into unexplored territory, and probably step on the gas too much. I've had a tree branch take out my front fender, and the beautiful interior of my Jeep looks like someone with a mud sprayer and went nuts inside the vehicle. That said, I have no idea what anything in this video is talking about - and while rock climbing is pretty cool, Mountain climbing through the trees, and hitting huge muddy areas at 30mph is a lot of fun (also, really expensive for body work, but whatever). I also hit the river beds and the bumpy roads hard, making my passengers hit the ceiling and flop around like rag dolls... Pretty funny, actually. Bottom line is you don't need a billion mods to have a good time. In fact, you can just tell by looking at them, that most of those beefed up vehicles haven't seen the grass, let alone an offroad adventure...

I'll be honest, lights before lockers is one I cannot agree with. Lights are so much more useful than lockers, and in so many more situations, that they make a lot of sense as one of the very first accessories to add to any vehicle. A spotlight and foglights is useful even on a vehicle that never leaves the road.

I have been a Jeeple all my life and have never been more disappointed in my fellow Jeepers than when I bought my 2017 JKU. I just turned 50 and had used my 92 YJ as my daily, my 86 Cj7 as my hunting rig and my 79Cj 5 as my beast crawler I'm somehow demoted to "Mall Crawler" status for wanting a little more comfort and a different approach to modifying it. My daughters got the angry bird grille for it and colored door handle inserts and grab handle kit. I took the anodized red on black color scheme over the rest of the vehicle, wiper arms, D rings and Fuel Stroke 18in wheels on Falken rubber. Funny how I'm Joe Cool in my 79 or 86.

Some of us buy used jeeps and are stuck with the *ahem* Bro grills until they can afford to put on a more factory style grill. I, for example, have recently purchased my first Jeep. It's a 2015 JKU with a "Shark" grill with "Angry Eyes". it's easily my least favorite mod, but the smittybuilt bumpers, 2.5" lift, Pro Comp 17" wheels 315/70R17 Mickey Thompsons make up for it. When I can save up enough, I'm getting a factory style grill (painted flat black) and swapping it out. As far as wheeling goes, I'm a novice at best, but I'm not going to crap on someone else's tastes or skill level. That's what chases people away from the Jeep Community. That said, the wheel and tire recommendations are incredibly useful. What you didn't mention was the impact on drivability when you go big and lifted. Highway speeds on "not so perfect" roads becomes a little sketchy at best, terrifying at worst.

The only thing I would point out is that you can’t tell if that 2500 pulls a trailer or not or whats in the bed. you can heavily infer a mall crawler is a mall crawler. Your point is valid who cares but you dont actually know what is in that pickup or what it was doing 5 minutes ago. A truck though, its more about style, the mods dont inhibit its use as a truck. A jeep with wheels like that? No way are they smashing those into rocks. I am in the heavy equipment/mining industry and everyone has truck albeit few are bro style. When I have 5,000 lbs of cutting edges in the bed of the pickup and its a stack of steel 6-12” high, sometimes I think about how NOONE has any idea that there is 5,000 lbs worth of steel in a stack with the gate closed because the truck looks normal. The time this comes to mind is when that civic cuts me off with all that weight as payload, I doubt that same civic would have been so aggressive if there was civic was sitting on top the bed rails as an obvious load. You might give that guy a bit more space but that civic is much lighter than this stack of steel that you cannot see... As to the bro style, my old neighbor hot-shots with a Dodge Ram, he has the wheels and the headlights and grill, to each their own. You could not be more wrong if you are implying that his truck does no work. It does nothing but pull heavy loads on the highway when someone needs something now.

Stock JK 30 tubing is the same as a 44. People complaining about tube bending on D30s should know that d44 stock can bend the same way. Weak point is the ring and pinion. Chromoly shaft it, 35” tires, be smart with your Petrie, and call it a day.
@danh8302
@danh8302 3 жыл бұрын
I’ve bent a 44 tube before that being said, I cant say that hear people complaining about bending tubes enexpectedly (that implies to me you were not abusing it; if you were it wasn’t the axles fault). I’ve broken Ujoints and shafts on 30s but never a R&P. I’ve also broken u joints and shafts on a D60 front. You know, I’ve actually broken 2 ford 8.8 shafts and those are beloved by jeepers. My scout came with a D30 front and drum brakes as a roller. So I tossed it right away because of the drum brakes (the first time I had to panic stop in a 40’s pick up with drum fronts was eye opening). I had a scout 44 that was usable so it got the 44 while i was getting the ford D 60 ready and I drove it like that for a minute. I would have never spent a dime on that D30 but I also had plans to make it a 1 ton driveline from the beginning. I wasn’t going to spend money on the 44 either. That is where this disconnect occurs in my opinion. You lose me at spending money on a D30. Also, we have differing philosophies of how much extra strength is built into our driveline vs how much abuse it can take. “Just take it easy” does not work for me, you could also say “just dont have oversized tires”. That is fine, I BUILD mine “smart” rather than being afraid of how close I am to its breaking point, especially if I am back coutry. I assure you that the designer of that axle never intended such a large tire or the forces imparted by it. In the proper context there is nothing bad to say about the Dana 30 axle. It is actually quite tough. I needed a NP203 for my doubler so I purchased a Chevy350, th350, NP203 as a combo pulled from a K5. I turned around and sold the motor for 80% of the purchase price leaving me with a TH350 and NP203. I used the 203 behind the TH400 in the scout and in front of the to be Ford 203. I knew someone that became in need of a TH350 so I traded that TH350 for approval of pulling, what is now my Ford HP Dana 60 front and NP203 out of the 79 ford down there in the field. That deal got me the adapter I needed, the transfer case that I was going to use part of and then turned into a $1000+ front axle all for about $200 maybe. Money for lockers and CrMo shafts goes to the proper axles for the application. Conversely I was in the early days of LS1 performance and I was launching 1.4X 60 foot times on a GM 7.5” 10 bolt. I know loads of people that exploded them, mine held until I pulled it for a 9”. That 7.5” that everyone dogs on, was hanging the front tires of that car in the air. The driver side tire would get about 2’ of air, it took repeat beatings on slicks and sticky surface.

Good vid. My input is that I bought a Body Armor rear bumper and tire carrier. It’s nice and beefy but the bearings on the pivot post are way under sized. The movement of the tire carrier crushes the bearings. Contacted the manufacturer and they say it’s not a problem even though I met another owner that has the same issue. I ran my Dana30 on 37's for a long time, broke 2 passenger side shafts over the years, and then swapped it with a rubicon 44 that I beefed up with a truss, gussets, ball joints and RCV axles. It's been holding up to a set of 39-13.5/17 BFG km3 tires. I've only broken a 1310 u joint on the yoke, so I may upgrade to a 1350.

So I’m super new to the jeep community, my wife has always wanted one and recently we were able to get an all white JKU. There are things she’d like to do to make it “uniquely hers” and off road fun. But I’m noticing the Jeep community is pretty judgy about what you do with your jeep so now she’s “doing research” to make sure it’s ok to get certain lights, fenders, wheels, grumpy grills and whatnot and it turned from something she was dead set on modding it to make it her own, to now she’s not sure.

The jeep community is very against jeeps loosing their intended purpose. The difference between a "mall crawler" or "road queen" and a trail rig can be as simple as the tires and wheels that are used. Both have the same lift but 37's on 22's and 37's on 17's are very different. They tell different stories. Now with that said. This is your Jeep. Do what you want to it. Screw everyone else. If you want to use it offroad? Then hook up with people and figure out what you need to do to make your rig work the best where you wheel. Going to be a pavement princess? It does not matter what you do. Everyone is judging you already so might as well just make it yours.

I wonder where you got your "rule of thumb" for wheel size? Because the older one I know was just 15 inch wheels were all you wanted on anything 35" or smaller, 16 inch wheels for 36-40, 44-48 for a 17, and at the time you could only buy 50+ inch tires in 20 or bigger rims because at that weight you needed the biggest brakes you could get.

It’s really the old dana 35 that was the turd. For a couple reasons, first of all it was undersized, under-built, and prone to breakage. The second issue with that was that it is a c-clip axle, which means once you break that axle shaft: nothing is holding it, and your wheel in. The Dana 30 has different versions, on a jk it’s probably too weak, but on say a tj... it was good up until 36” tires. Even still, on a tj with 36” tires I run a truss, sleeves and gussets. Ambiguous statements about the Dana 30 are sorta lame dude, coulda laid out which platform you were talking about so as not to spread misinformation.

It may seem controversial to do this video and you guys already made your disclaimer that people can do what they want to their rig. But...this is a channel for the off-road crowd, therefore content, product suggestions and perspective is going to be tailored to those of us who...off-road. A large number of mods people add for show, have no application on a purpose-built off-road vehicle. But, telling people what they want to hear just to ring the cash register is unethical, and it does not do people service when they get out on a trail and learn the hard way. And in my opinion, you guys are being honest. Better to be upfront rather than tell people what they want to hear. One or two product call-outs I didn't necessarily agree with because they don't interfere with off-road performance. But overall I get it.

While I agree with most of your points, I have to disagree on the Dana 44. Yes, if you're running 37" tires on a behemoth 4 door land yacht, then the "true" D44 is a good idea. But I know plenty of D30hp's running 35" without issue, especially in the lighter real jeeps. CJ, YJ, XJ, and TJ. I know you're plugging your products, but you should have addressed Rubicon front axles. They say Dana 44, share the ring gear and pinion, however they share the same axle tubes, shafts, and even the u-joint as the D30. So if you're saying those are weak points on a D30... Aren't they just as weak on a Rubicon 44? Again, I get that you're trying to sell a $4,000 axle, but how is that better than a few hundred dollars for a super 30 kit, Grand Cherokee knuckles with crossover steering and larger brakes... that rivals a stock true 44 in strength?... With better ground clearance, plus, you don't have to remove your axle and steering linkage.

In the honda world, we call it ricey and here we call it mall crawlers. Whatever you want to call it, it's the balance between performance and aesthetics. Car enthusiast tend to hate the non-functional upgrades and of course, we all jizz to an upgrade that performs & looks cool. Apart of me wants to say "it's your jeep do what you want and ignore the haters" but there's another side of me also that agrees with the school of thought that a jeep is rugged, capable and an adventure vehicle and not a garage queen which when you 1990's fast and the furious mod a jeep... it breaks the hearts of the essence of the JeeP. But you know... i have a rifle with all sorts of ridiculous attachments and all mostly from Cal of Duty and i find it awesome. My friends think it's cool and it's fun to shoot in the desert. I imagine that i am a (insert term for cool vs functional) person to the gun community and the reason i don't know about the term is because i am not really a gun-enthusiast. So unless some guy says something to me, i'll keep buying rifles, add all sorts of dumb attachements due to mostly cool factor rather than functional. - I imagine... your mall crawlers are just as oblivious as they're not on forums and lving and breathing jeeps... their friends think it's cool, girls think it's pretty and they keep in Trucking. - TL:DR: Different strokes, but i will always be watching.

Dana 30 gets a lot of hate from people that don't understand the axle. If you are going to be running larger than 35" tires, you probably are better getting a larger axle anyway. If you are running 35" tires or smaller, put a truss on it, maybe upgrade to chromoly axle shafts, re-gear if needed and it will be fine. Try to find a high-pinion Dana 30 as they are stronger. Dont expect to put 40" tires and do nothing and have an unbreakable axle. But for most budget people (that can't afford 80k jeeps that never go offroad), the dana 30 will suffice.

Hi, I enjoy your KZbin videos…keep up the great work! I’m going to order a new Wrangler Rubicon and need some advice. I want a 2” lift with 35” tires which is now offered directly from Jeep (and under warranty)…but you can’t order that package with the 3.0 diesel (which I wanted). So my question is: Will the 3.6 etorque with the factory 4.56 gears be enough engine or should I go for the diesel and put the lift kit and tires on later? Thanks for your response.

I agree with the lockers but you're wrong about the d30. however if you have a rear d35 in the rear that has to be swamped out. I dd/wheel an old yj w/ c8.25 rear and tj d30 up front w/ chromo axles shafts , 35's locked. the key is be smart and don't have a heavy foot like you have one ton's . A lot of us have shoe string budgets and work on our rigs in the drive way and can't afford what you guys are selling lol

Great video just found the channel! I know everyone prefers 17 or 18 inch wheels but what is wrong with 15s or 16's? On my wrangler im running 285 75r16 with more sidewall for a better ride quality. All major brands have that size so im confused why 17s? And i run trails with a d30 front.. Can't afford to blow 2+ grand on a d44 swap lol

More tire and less wheel is always better than more wheel and less tire. Looks tougher and rides/performs better as well.

I run the same tires on my 2dr JK. When I bought my wheels they were trying to convince me to go 17" cause I would get more options of tires. But I just love the look of more tire than wheel, plus everywhere I asked, they had the size I wanted for tires, so I was happy I went with 16" wheels. The only thing I regret is not going for 35" tires.

For the JL Rubis, anything less than a 17" you run the risk of rubbing the rim on the brake... I'm not sure if the same is true for the Sahara or Sport.

17-18 wheel size tires are normally cheaper and more readily available where I live. I still run 17 on my 09 jku Rubicon but 9inch wide with a costume offset wheel. I'm 5inch wider track than stock.

I live on the beach, it makes no sense to build a rock crawler here. Limited slip front and rear, regear and a bubba rope is all you need here. It makes no sense to spend 20k on rock crawling mods if all you do is run in the sand and dirt roads. Build your jeep to fit your needs, not theirs.

On the topic of the Dana 30 and 35. I just recently absolutly ruined the spider gears in both of mine, running 35x12.50x15, and wheeling HARD at Stoney Lonesome OHV. Just put TruTracs in and Yukon gears. So far so good? Guess we'll find out.
