I live in Alberta Canada. Wheeling here is mud rocks sand and yes lots of snow at higher elevation. So I’ll say once for all and without a doubt the Snow rating is essential. I run the wildpeak AT3W on 2023 Rubicon Extreme Recon. Aired down to 18 psi 3 feet of wet heavy spring snow is no competition for these tires. From the snow to mud and river beds and back to snow. I’ve run Mickey Thompson MTs and Toyo open country AT3s, the falkens dominate

There is a real and noticable difference between AT tires with the 3 Peak rating and winter tires such as Blizzaks. Living in the NW, I have about 6 months of winter. My BFG AT KO2s work pretty well for on road conditions, though you do feel it get loose on ice. For me, these are good enough for on road travel, though I do have acreage and with the off road performance being better in deep snow, I am comfortable in using these year round on my Tundra. My Wife has a 4Runner, and especially given she does not have the experience driving in the winter and does get nervous, and my truck takes the abuse on the property or camping, I do have a 2nd set of Blizzak snow tires that I put on hers for winter. When it comes to any winter road conditions from hardpack, to ice, or black ice, these Blizzak winter tires are off the charts and very noticable, even comparing to the 3 PEAK rated BFG tires I run. Between the sipes and softer compound that stays soft in very cold conditions, there is just no comparison and it is astounding how well these tires work from breaking performance, to grab and control. Again, when talking deep snow they are not as good at my BFGs, but the reality is they are far better for typical road conditions during the winter. The Blizzaks are also night and day when comparing all season car tires to winter tires and why I supply my kids with winter tires for their cars per the safety aspect. So, if you are comfortable in winter conditions with regular tires like the BFG AT KO2s, then run them. If you are hesitant or nervous driving in winter conditions, you will be shocked at the difference in what winter tires like Blizzaks provide. I guess for those old school football guys who played before gloves, the difference is putting on the gloves they have today and catching a ball. Shockingly, It is truly that big of a gap...

I just moved to WA from TX and currently have Goodyear Wrangler Territory M/T on my truck. I’ve never driven in snow or ice, would it be best for me to get some blizzaks or a tire with the 3 peak rating? Also my wife has nitto Tera grapplers A/T on her 4 runner, would it be best to run a different tire as well during the winter? Thank you.

@@Betty_white_3.0 I'd say it depends on how much driving you'll be doing in the snow and how frequent it snows where you are. I'm in MT and I have blizzaks for my outback. The rest of the year I have geolandar g015 which do great in snow too but when it gets real cold and icy and I have extended road trips that's when the blizzaks come out. If I wasn't into winter sports I'd be fine with the A/Ts but again its preference.

I remember before the mountain snowflake symbol, tire companies still used to advertise results from standardized tests to sell winter tires, one company in particular made a tire that had “the shortest stopping distance on ice” the tire had no tread blocks whatsoever, just five siped lateral grooves and were flat out dangerous to actually use in winter (it didn’t pass the snowflake test, and was replaced by the x-ice)

1996 Tacoma 4x4 3.4 with 318,000 miles. Cheap (relatively speaking) Goodyear Wrangler Authority from walmart. Most aggressive tread on their rack as I was getting some motor oil. Worth trying, and worth buying. On my third set. 3 Peak, M+S, and they work pretty well. They slip in mud on the mountain roads where I live if it rains hard, but grip pretty well in snow up to about 14-16". 1988 Samurai with about 150k miles. Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac. 3 Peak and M+S. Maybe the truck, maybe the tires, but better grip in most conditions. Was stuck only once (wife forgot to lock the front hubs!). Purchased at a dedicated tire store when I bought the truck in Salida, CO. about 6 years ago. Somewhat more expensive for smaller tires. Just got General Altimax Arctic dedicated winter tires for wife's Subaru Crosstrek. This is the second set I bought. They stay on the vehicle all year, and last a few years. Her son used the car for vacationing last year because of the great mileage, and blew one out in FLORIDA in July. Snow tires on Florida pavement in summer. Duh! She had use of his 4Runner for the almost year, with highway tires until I put a set of Wrangler Authorities on it last November. ***Both wife and I are 60+, and don't drive hard any more, summer or winter. No doubt adds to tire life, and keeps vehicles on the road in all conditions.

In states like Colorado it really is needed. I bought some Pro Comp tires for the Jeep a few years back. Overall they were a good tire but in the snow they were worthless. I was the guy other jeeps were pulling out of the snow. Their replacement tires eat snow and ice for fun. Now I’m back to the helping others out and driving with confidence. If my Bronco ever gets here, new do it all tires that preform in winter are a priority!

Then just a month ago installed the Open Country AT3's 285/70/17 (for $243 mounted, balanced and installed) sitting on a 2005 E350 4" lift 4x4 Van and can tell ya they feel so much better. I've been through 3 feet of snow no problem with the AT2's so I know these with perform even better with the 3 peak rating, super happy, Toyo for life!

@@timothygonzalez6679 The tires came with 16/32 tread and I had 9/32 left, I prob could of gotten another year or so out of them, but the only reason I lost them was to dry rot. I took a turn a little to fast and the sidewall split from the bad dry rot. Then a week later literally the day before I was getting the new tires installed, I even had them in the back of my van, something happen where my tire just deflated as I was backing up out of a spot, maybe I ran something over lol. So i had to call a tow truck and have him drop it off at the shop at 9:30pm so that was a nice $143 bill lol to tow it a mile and a half. If you got the P metric tires they have a 65k mile warranty I believe. I need the LT tired for the weight my van can hold.

I prefer General Tire, for the balance of price and performance. But I bought a 2020 Dodge Durango GT AWD with the Tow-N-Go package. I have Z type cable chains and Autosock traction devices. But living in California, most of the weather is nice. But I drive in conditions that are as low as 18°f. And my area gets snow up to 2ft some years. So after 20,000 miles I got rid of the Bridestone 422 tires that came stock. And gave the Toyo AT3 tires a try. While the tires have a firm feel. They ride better on rough pavement. The old tires were good in the rain. The AT3's feel a little nicer. The stock size was 265/50-20. Went slightly taller with 255/55-20 tires. The speedometer only reads 1mph slow at 70mph (GPS checked). 3PMSF is a good standard. And the past 3 years of use on our Ram diesel pickups. Have given us good traction, wear, and ride characteristics.

We live in far North Eastern Ca @ 5000’. From Nov - April the roads regularly have snow and ice on them. A high of 30° is not unusual through winter. I run 3 peak AT’s ( Currently Falken Rubitrek 35x12.50x16. Goodyear Duratracs are great also) on my F250 superduty. Very happy. And I run dedicated studded winter tires on our Explorer in Winter ( Nov - Apr/ May) and BFG AT’s in the summer. I like that my wife can drive on a totally iced over road in the winter and it simply doesn’t slip- even if you try 😉. All I remember is that they came from Les Schwab, and they weren't Toyo or any of the other main brands. Had a pair of Michelin A/Ts later that were very good in just about every condition _except_ snow. I wanted to replace them with something better but decided to wait until they wore out. For many years now we have experienced the benefits of snow tires. We are only a hour south of you in WI. And we started out trying some very unknown brands. I also worked for firestone. So the blizzecs where used widley. The jetson tires are some of the best we have tried. The benefits is a non directional tire. The "blizzexs" suck! They are a one season tire and dont clean out with slush. Most of our local first responders ran these on squads, ambulance, and light duty fire trucks. With very little satisfaction. We turned them to jetsons 15 years ago. With the invent of the cooper weather masters. We found our new and to date best winter tire. They are good for about 2 years with continuous year round use. If changed, the compound will last about 4 years before it hardens. 99% of winter tires are directional. Great for forward movement on pavement. In deeper snow they also clog up. The larger voids the winter masters have....they clear out on each revolution. Both of these have the optional stud points. And we got to try them in the rocky mountains a few years ago. Outstanding performance. I have had the same set on my jeep for 4 years now. They are 50% tread that has hardened this fall, so a new set is needed. They are on back order. If i need to find others....i have no problems going back to the jetson brand. They are a slight bit softer, so i dont recommend summer use!!! Dont pay for the hype of main brands. And if you plan on driving in the winter storms or off road. Dont get the directional treat designed.

I have 37" Nitto Trail Grapplers and they seem to slide easy; we got a small amount of snow and while everyone else got stopped in front me mine slid. Cars were in front of me so I was going slow. These are M+S rated tires. I had to slide into the next open lane to avoid an accident. Not sure if that was an isolated experience but I've been apprehensive driving in snow since with these tires. I also got stuck in about 6-10" of unplowed snow in a parking lot, kind of embarrassing when these cars with little tires were getting out with no issue. I had to use my Maxtrax in 4wd low to get out. Great summer tires I will say but I'm questioning its winter capabilities.

I live in Mich, have ran Both Firestone Winter force and Blizzaks on 4Runner & jeeps ... I cant see owing multiple sets of tires for every season, especially big & expensive suv tires but I will say this... The Winter force were great and the Blizzaks were Outstanding in deep powder & ice...No tire I have ever run could compete with the Technology that's in those tires in harsh winter conditions... If a company emulated many of the aspects of these tires & put them in a larger tire... I would buy them but anything less & it would be whats out there now... Also, most winter tires that are truly great, wont work on hot roads and actually feel slick & unstable due to the engineered soft multi-cell compound...

You were probably most correct when you suggest that drivers may just be driving too fast for the conditions. Just because the speed limit says 70 MPH that doesn't mean you can drive 70MPH when there is snow or ice on the road. 40 may well be too fast on AT or MT tires. Every time we get a little snow i find lifted trucks with 37' or larger tires down in the borrow pit on the freeway. if the county mounties or state highway cops get to them they will not only need to pay for a tow but a sizeable "too fast for existing conditions ticket, Just because you can get going doesn't nessesarily mean you can stop or turn. A lot of these Jerks think 4WD means they are invinceable Sorry for the spelling, i just got a new keyboard with a sticky "A" and it throws off all my typing.

Up north by the border. Get dedicated snow tires if you're in a snowy climate. There is no comparison from dedicated winter tires to three peak all terrains. Sometimes even winter don't have total traction on ice, you need them studded for ice driving, but can easily get by without studs on a snow tire. With anything you've got to slow down in the winter.

I was pleasantly surprised by how well they balanced and rode on pavement given their sidewall armor and the tall sidewalls. They were 31" x 10.5" w/15" rims. This was back in the day when Ford and Toyota had 15" rims on their compact pickups. The only other AT tire I had that was particularly good in snow was my General Grabber ATs I had on my '88 Bronco II.

I am running a set of Toyo Open Country AT III's and though it has not snowed (northeastern U.S.) since I bought them, I LOVE everything about them......they handle well in the rain (provided you drive like you have some sense), they're quiet (I don't hear mine under 60 mph), they're mountain peak rated, and they look good. Even though you did mention the difference between all weather and winter tires as far as the temperature the temperature is the most important thing as that's why you get a snow tire or what they call a winter tire when your weather conditions are below 40 degrees as that's when any tire that doesn't have a snowflake emblem the rubber is going to get hard and you will not have the traction on hard pavement roads as far as turning and stopping and also of course traction but most important is turning and stopping as the compound of the rubber is hard and there is hardly no traction on surfaces below 40 degrees. When you have a snowflake emblem on your tire then you know that it is capable of having incredible traction on dry and snow and of course also ice but depending on the brand of the tire you will see a significant difference whether it is deep snow traction on ice and also you're turning capabilities. I have been using snow tires ever since I started driving and at that time you only needed to put snow tires on the front or rear and since there was a lot of accidents you can only purchase for snow tires which makes sense because you need to have that constant traction on all four wheels. It is a night-and-day difference if you have front wheel drive with snow tires and you do not put snow tires on the rear this causes the rear of your car to have bad breaking and for the rear of the car to slide out either stopping straight or when making a turn which causes you to go into a curb. I have tried just about every snow tire that has been made and those of Bridgestone Blizzak is one of the best tires the rubber since it's so soft does not wear so good that's why I use the GENERAL ALTIMAX ARCTIC 12. Though I think the Hakkapeliitta R5 Spanish much more expensive it is an outstanding snow tire that is better than the general but the general is half the price and they are very long lasting and will last 4 to 5 seasons is taken off at the correct time of the year when it is above 40 degrees but I have noticed even driving them all year round they will last 3 Seasons and they also have the thickest tread pattern of all snow tires I have seen out there. They are also one of the thickest tread patterns out there 12/32 which is one of the reasons why they last so long and are so incredible in the deep snow

I bought a 2024 Tacoma TRD sport, not sure which tire to buy, I live in Seward Alaska, it seems the 3 peak mountain ones are what I need, Our temps fall below freezing often.
