I feel like I'm "that guy" sometimes. Now I have 39.5s and everybody thinks it's because of the tires. Starting out on 31s and learning to pick a line helps even as you upgrade in tire size. I know plenty of folks who had tons and 40s but got hung up on stuff that I drove right through on 35s.

Undeniable that the driving skills challanged crowd will be those who benifit most from 40s. Fuel cost will make this an option for only those with the deepest pockets. Rarely do wheelers on 40s make it thru a season with out serious repair costs unless wheeling on trails doable on 35s. Strong winching skills will more then make up for the tire size advantage. The fuel savings alone will be more then enough to cover the cost of a top end winch setup. You pick!

I think 37's are the perfect fit for me for the future...I don't know if I'm ready to commit to the work needed on my Jeep for 40's 😅

I'm ready to start upgrading, at this point I've come to the conclusion that I'd rather be over spent and over built and have a grand time on the trail then under spend and under built and wind up under the jeep repairing that which broke because I pushed it too hard. Growing up with generations before me on the trail I've witnessed time and again the pain and struggle it is to bring barely built rigs to the trails. Fun and games it can be, but the best fun is always finishing a weekend with friends and no broken parts or wallets.

All said so true. The cost of 40s never ends. But then stupidity never does either. Once you go over stock it all automatically begins to unravel.

I’ve done all the axle upgrades and been looking for the Mickey’s featured here for six months. Way overbuilt now for the 37’s I’m running. Can’t wait till the 40’s are back in stock. Come on MT!

Everyone talks about how you need dana 60s but not about your transmission becoming the weakest link or the cost of replacing a axle shaft vs a transmission...not to mention getting parts these days...

I chose to go with 38s and stay with the Dana 44. Regeared to 4.88. Full King coil overs and Evo frame system. This is my first true off road rig. Sometime in the future, Dana 60 axels and 42s!

See... exactly. Now there's a thinker.. that's why I went from stock xj small tire to the still small 31" Nankang M/T ( 👈awesome flipping tire ) got 54,000 beat down miles out of that tire then moved up to a Master Craft M/T classic set 33" to 35" BFG KM2 to now the BFG KM3 39x13.50xR17 that I'm putting a build together now. That has been in works since 2019 when I made my mind up I was going to start towards a 1 TON build now when this is finished up the XO cage wrap is coming second and the LS swap one day... all BUILT NOT BOUGHT... mostly😉

I feel like offroading and rock crawling are two entirely different things these days. Do you want 40" tires for rock crawling. Definitely. Do you need anything over 33"s to go on about 80% of off-road trails. Nope

Had 35s, rcv’s, a 2.5 lift and 4.88s. I now have fusion full float 60/80 axles with 5.38s and 40s and full psc kit on order. Can’t wait to get everything mounted up and hit the trails. Many a trail I couldn’t do or was a massive struggle on my 35s. Completely enjoyed the 35s. But was time to upgrade for sure

I SAS'd my Hummer H3 and gave it a 6 inch lift to run 40's. Had to get RCV axle shafts, 5.13 gears, a PCM tune, RAM assist, custom front and rear extra heavy duty drive lines, Spring over axle in the rear and relocate the front and rear axles about a half inch from their "stock" locations. I decided that 40's would be too much for my rig after all that was said and done, even with a tune and pushing almost 280HP and over 300 torque. Then I got 4 inch lift coil springs and decided 37s would be the best way for my rig to go. Took off the RAM assist and I am now confident that my vehicle almost never have an awkward trail break.

It’s all fine as you have said… But sadly now 42’s are becoming the new 40’s… And as more and more upgrade to 40’s+… The Trails are becoming more and more Scar’d … What use to be doable on 35/37’s now are requiring some of us to look around for the Bypass 😢

Disagree. The guys with 40s walk through sections. Its the guys on smaller tires takling the same sections with alot of skinny pedal and stacking rocks that are tearing up trails.

35s or 37s is more reasonable for us mortals. 35s if you're mostly driving onroad, and 37s if you're doing 50/50 offroad/onroad or more. The step from 37s to 40s is really expensive.

GREAT video!! I hope to have a dedicated off-road rig soon! My truck currently has 295 60R20's which is essentially a 34" tire.. It does have a lift on it, but not sure of height. Would going to 35's be okay or would I need to upgrade the suspension?

I went from 35s to 40s on built stock axles with RCVs. I still broke RCVs front and back. So I upgraded to tons and I did break a front axle in my SD60. Which was all my fault. I call 40s destroyers LOL. I had to cut a lot of sheet metal front and back because I don't want a lift any higher than 4".

Unless you're a competitive offroader, I don't see the point. A stock-sprung TJ Rubicon on 35s can get around fine with basically a winch and high-clearance skids.

I'm contemplating running those on my F-350 6.7, I know I have the torque to move them plus the strong Dana 60 upfront and Dana M275 outback so I don't see much of a problem. My concern is killing the MPG while towing across the country which is a few times a year.
@TrailBuilt
@TrailBuilt 8 ай бұрын
It really depends on what you are using now as well. If they weigh just a little more than your current tires, you may not experience that much of a loss. But yes, we agree! Especially in your conditions of cross-state travel, MPG is a huge factor.

Funny the vehicle that got me into this makes people think I’m crazy. 06 Kia Sorrento of all things. I found out by accident that those things in some cases are better than a Jeep problem I ran into is lack of aftermarket support
