This video shows how to mechanically lockout the trailer brakes when the electrical lockout is unavailable without drilling holes and voiding your warrantee.

True, dielectric does mean non-conductive. Imagine if the grease conducted electricity-you would short between pins & things. The grease protects against rust, but if the pins & sockets are serviceable, there’s still metal-to-metal contact so it can conduct. Long explanation short, it neither hurts nor assists with conducting, but it does reduce wear and provides protection from the elements. It even comes in a marine version that’s “resistant” to water.

I've been using the dielectric grease for many, many years on lots of electrical connections, including my outdoor Christmas decorations and extension cords. Won't connect anything without it.

I also use it plenty on outdoor connections, but just does't feel right.

If your electrical receptacle doesn't accept the 5 pins, only 4, does this cause the brakes to lock while backing up the trailer? ie...my truck only has 4 pins, the hitch has 5 pins, leaving one unused.

Yes but to add a 5 pin is easy and the 5th wire goes to the backup lights so not hard to find.

Thank you very much. Turns out this issue was mechanical not electrical. The 5th pin has no affect on the trailer brakes.

Dielectric grease does not conduct electricity. It's purpose is to lubricate and to protect connector from corrosion, moisture and dirt.

Agree with you but every marine electrician to work on any of my boats has taken connections apart, cleans them and then greases them before reassembly. Can't explain it but it works.

You sir helped me a ton! I actually 3D printed a similar design and it works great. Did a video of it on my channel if anyone wants to check it out. Thank you for the inspiration! I've had two trailers with similar UPF A160 couplers and had this exact issue 2-3 times.

Watched your video and yours is definitely an improvement. We cam up with ours 11pm after getting towed home when my truck broke down and couldn't get the trailer in the driveway. Just don't drive on the road with it installed as in Florida it is a law to have working brakes on multi axle trailers.
