in the comics, the two main characters are younger, around 12-13, hence the "dead boys." they were aged up 3-4 years for the show to allow for more mature themes and more options with casting & filming.

Neil gaiman is one of the executive producers of this show! :) he was also the executive producer of The Sandman, so he's definetly on board with Dead Boy Detectives/The Sandman Universe on Netflix

This show was a Doom Patrol Spin off for HBO Max. they recast the trio but kept the villain Night Nurse(the redhead woman in the trailer is the only one they kept). after it got sold for Netflix They changed it to be a Sandman Universe. I’m wondering if they did a reshoot and add Death into the show becasue it wasn’t planed to be in this universe in the first place. however Dead Boy Detectives was first appeared in Sandman comics.
