oh I thought I saw you out there as I was on a friend's yacht coming back from Phillip island and a say over in Queenscliff.

Could of been, see lots of other yachts, once away from the shoreline of PPB yachts are the main boats you tend to see. Must do a trip to Phillip Island again some time when I can get enough time off work.

How does your previous Northwind 7 compare with the RL28? Why did you change?
@TRAILERYACHTADVENTURES3 жыл бұрын
Southern Cross 23/Northwind 7 are great boats and very seaworthy and easy to sail. The main downside is they are small inside and even though we had extended cruises with our 2 teenage kids it was a bit of a squeeze. I'm not getting any younger and the standing headroom inside the RL28 is great for my aging back. The biggest reason is that my wife loves the room inside and will now happily go on extended cruises. The RL is a little more sea kindly than the northwind as it has a deeper vee shape to the hull. This also means that its sea lockers have a smaller volume than the northwind with its flatter more rounded hull which can pound a bit in heavy seas. Sailing wise the RL needs more active skippering with sail adjustments needed with small changes in conditions. The northwind is more tolerant of varying conditions without the need for trimming. Speed wise the RL is a bit faster as you would expect for a longer waterline but only by 1 knot in most situations. Cheers Mark

HI I've enjoyed your videos of Halcyon and now the RL 28. may I ask why you chose the RL 28. and what's happened to Halcyon? Cheers Tony .I have a Jedda 22 which I sail on Westernport Bay
@TRAILERYACHTADVENTURES7 жыл бұрын
My partner wanted something more comfortable and I wanted something I consider seaworthy so after much thinking I decided on the RL28. Trailerability is good and it lends itself to extended cruising which I like doing. Halcyon was sold to a guy who will probably do most of his cruising on Western Port so you will probably see her around your home waters.

Thanks. . What does the RL 28 need in the way of strengthening? Is most of the ballast in the swing keel?

I was thinking about buying a long shaft Parsun's 5 hp outboard and I notice you have one for your tender and maybe had another one on your Southern Cross 23... are you happy with them and would you recommend going on your experience with them ?? Regards Nick

For the price they are good motors, generally clones of yamaha's. They have proven themselves to be as reliable as other brand name motors I have had. The only real fault I have with them is they are more prone to corrosion than more expensive motors and it is important to keep anodes serviced/replaced and touch up paint if badly scratched. Mine are both 2 strokes and learning how to tune them to get the best out of them is useful. And for those that put parsun down, twice now my 5.8hp parsun has saved the day when a johnston on one occasion and more recently on my new RL28 the mercury let me down.

I noticed the Merc in the cockpit !!! thankyou for taking the time to reply. I have a little Careel 18 that needs a new motor and a 4 to 5 hp two stroke would be perfect.

What do you tow the RL28 with
@TRAILERYACHTADVENTURES5 жыл бұрын
A 2016 mazda BT50 4wd and it tows very well, better than my 23ft TS used to. Main thing is that the car and tow bar is rated to 3 ton as when fully loaded for cruising the RL28 can reach this. The BT50 is rated to 3.5 ton.
