This was the only Trek movie, arguably, where the Enterprise and whatever they encountered felt bigger than the crew itself. When Nick Meyer came in he resurrected the more character-based drama the series had excelled at - our heroes were bigger than the tech, as that was where the best literate storytelling could be unearthed. It’s a question of preference, really - storytelling through larger-than-life visuals of the unknown, or storytelling through the richness of natural character conflict? (The latter of which this film touched upon all too briefly with the Kirk and Decker sparring.) I know I prefer Meyer’s approach, but again, it’s down to the viewer.

“…of a Robert Wise film.” So says narrator Orson Welles, whose film Citizen Kane was edited by Wise. Contrary to the posters below, this was really exciting to see in cinemas leading up to the premiere. After many false starts, this trailer said “it’s really happening and they’re all back.”

I hadn't thought of the Welles/Wise connection. It's pretty ironic, as Robert Wise recut Welles' Magnificent Ambersons without his knowledge due to the studio's insistence.

This trailer makes it feel like some serious shit is about to go down. It has this heavy atmosphere like 2001: Space Odyssey, but also horror filled sense of dread like Alien. It even feels like an art film, not something you'd see in a blockbuster but something deep and psychological that the Enterprise will have no chance against and have you thinking even after leaving the theatre. Unfortunately none of that happens, in fact barely anything happens but the movie is still pretty great.

People insist that the first Star Trek movie flopped, but let's look at the numbers. It grossed 139 million dollars. The budget has been estimated between 26 and 44 million dollars, but either way, the film made a healthy profit. In fact, it was the most successful film with the original cast, and is still number one when adjusted for inflation.

Extremely glad to see this, and I may have even seen it before the film came out, as I recall the phrase "The Human adventure", but this trailer is so lack luster. Just saying the names of the characters, no music, nothing of the plot, not really anything special effect wise. So uninspired. But it did sound like the THX sound at the end of the trailer. Was that just a coincidence, or is there a connection?

Most likely, that's all the footage they had for the teaser trailer. The movie was notorious for running behind schedule, to the point where the print for the premiere was still wet from being developed when it arrived at the theater. Later trailers featured a little more footage.

@@greenmonsterprod Yes indeed your right, Almost no completed footage of any SFX shots at the point of when this trailer was made, Over a year spent on the SFX shots by the original team that produced just 30 seconds of footage, The director fired them straight after he had seen the "footage" they had done.
