Nice job. I’ve come to the conclusion that it is best to do most rv repairs yourself. I’ve seen people cut a strip of plate to fit between the brackets of a hanger like that, bend to an obtuse V and weld it to the inside of the hanger legs with the point of the V above the shackle bolt, and the ends of the plate welded to the bottom of the frame/ I beam (if that makes sense). Idea being supports the legs of the hanger while still allowing some flex, and distributes load along a longer area of the frame. Anyhoo, nice work.
@iLoveRVlife2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Jeff. We put a lot of miles on the 5th wheel after the repair. Fortunately no other failures and the repair held well. I think the failed shackle had a flaw and the very rough roads that trip did it in. Agree there’s a number of bracing options that help.
@JeffinTD2 жыл бұрын
@@iLoveRVlife Yeah. Pretty common failure. At least it wasn’t a frame failure by the overhang on a 5th wheel frame. Seems to me massive rigs are often built out of 1/8 wall mild steel plate and 2x8 or whatever tube. It doesn’t seem like it would be near strong enough to not fatigue and crack over time.

Couple options. Haven’t seen the tube. I’ve seen flat bar and angle iron to box the bracket. This one may have had an issue. Thinking they burnt through to much metal on the weld. Never had another issue.

We have been traveling full Time for almost a year and a half now and I stopped at gas station and noticed I could see the chords showing on the tires 😬. Took it to get tires replaced and they informed me that the leaf spring hanger had broken which caused the tires to go bad and also the tires had worn a spot under the trailer from driving with it broken (for who knows how long…) we have been stranded in South Georgia for over a month now trying ti get insurance and Camping World synced up but finally all pets are coming in and should be on the road again soon. Jerry, we had our spring hanger bolt shear off. Before the bolt fell off It elongated the spring hanger hole. On top of having to replace the hardware I had to replace 2 tires because I didn’t know this happened until I got home from our 3000 mile trip. Cost for the repair and 2 tires 1400.00. I had the extended warranty and in the fine print it says bolts & fastener not covered! I felt I wasted my money on the warrant. This mishap gives all new meaning to the pre- departure walk around!

That a tough one. I always give the wheels and undercarriage a good look over before we take off. We had a couple of really bad spots we hit and guess there was a rear shift somewhere that snapped the hanger. We too got bit on the extended warranty. We got took pretty bad on ours. Lesson learned.

Out of balance tires can add to the wear and tear ... we found 4 tires to be 7 ounces out of balance on each. We installed 4 Chromatic centrifugal balancers and they will always run in balance. Put them on out dually and it made all the difference in the world. Lots of 18 wheelers use them and it also extends tire life to have the balanced. Nice job and glad you cover the fire danger ... I was worried watching the grinder throwing sparks.... :)
@iLoveRVlife5 жыл бұрын
Thanks. I’ve heard of the balancers. These were weighted when I changed from 16s to 17.5s. No signs of cupping after 4 years. My issue is softening the ride. Seriously considering the center point air ride suspension later this year. Jury still out at $1,300. Wanting to take the shock out of the large bumps and uneven concrete.
@bsjcook5 жыл бұрын
@@iLoveRVlife Jerry, we are always interested in smoothing the ride. We did change our hitch to a Reese 20k goosebox and could see the difference immediately, and would like to change the suspension to at least add shocks, and will watch for you to pull the plug on the air suspension. We did put in a Moryde suspension on our old 5er and it raised the height a little and gave each axle twice the movement when driving over any bumps. Our biggest concern is for better trailer brakes; thinking disk brakes. We do run our 40' 5er with TST sensors and that save a tire last year when it alerted us to a fast leak. We stopped at the side of the interstate before the tire even looked flat. We were able to have the tire repaired the next day (screw) which saved the cost of a blown out tire and maybe a lot more damage to the RV.... Happy trails, we like your channel!

Ugggh. What a nightmare. I am not impressed with the hangers on my 2017 Keystone Carbon. Flimsy looking. Last winter I installed a wet bolt kit. Around 2000 miles on my rv and the plastic bushings were all wore through and I also installed the Joyrider Shock system. My trailer should’ve been a triple axle, two isn’t enough. The first time I pulled it loaded with my clothes and a Harley softail and washer and dryer in the back I couldn’t go over 60 or it would sway like a pull behind. Traded the regular cab single wheel f350 for a crew cab dually f350 and it was better, then upgraded from E 10 ply tires to G 14 ply and 👍👍 pulled way better and then did the shocks and that helped with the tail of the trailer bobbing and with bucking over bridges. A couple weeks ago I installed Summo Springs rubber helper springs. They site rite on top of the u bolt plate and touch the I beam frame. My axle is under the springs. I haven’t pulled it yet but they should help. It kinda looked like my leaf springs were all bent a bit. Little worried. I climbed under my brothers camper next door a couple times to see the difference. It’s a triple axle Mobile Suits FullHouse toyhauler. What a beast. Triple 8k axles and a box tube frame, all those leaf spring perches are beefed up with gussets and plates. Beautiful. And thick steel. And here I am with some thin little junk for spring mounts attached to a flimsy I beam.
@iLoveRVlife5 жыл бұрын
Terry, extra challenge with a toy hauler, especially with the extra weight in the tail. Fortunately our weight is more center mass and our 5th wheel tows well. We also tow without water which helps a lot. We came close to buying a Grand Design toy hauler this year. It was a 3 axle and the frame was very well built. Close, but trade in and payments wouldn’t let it happen.
@terryjensen725 жыл бұрын
I Love RV Life Those Grand Designs are pretty nice and I read they have a insulated garage floor. Nearly all toyhaulers don’t. Mine has spray foam now. Uggh, more tail weight😂 What I’ve been seeing lately is the higher end toyhaulers are running nearly the same as a Mobile Suits or DRV. Mine is mid level. It was a year old close out sale 45k. But if I was to spend 100k it be a Mobile Suites. Boxed steel frame and 3 1/4 inch outside walls with wool batted insulation, insulated garage floor and the entire belly pan of my brother’s is layered with thick insulation bats also. We thought we would easily dig up in their one day and do some work 😂. Pretty sure they have double pain windows also. I recently seen a used 2016 identical to my brothers for sale on RV Trader in Arkansas for 80k. I know my brothers was 100k one year used.Wish I could afford one. Pretty sure I’m stuck with this until it’s shot just like my last rv.

Thanks Lou. Put this off for 2 months. Cold and wet, plus a bit of a task. We’re antsy and looking forward to taking off in a couple weeks.
