This creepy, bucolic period horror film didn't make much of an impression theatrically, but was rediscovered through late-night television airings. Although former actor turned best-selling author Tom Tryon wrote the screenplay from his own novel, he professed to be disappointed with To Kill a Mockingbird director Robert Mulligan's nostalgia-laced, Ray Bradburyish handling of it. Composer Jerry Goldsmith's music score was heavily edited in the release version.

Spot on description here, including the Wyeth reference. This is one of the best psychological thrillers I have ever experienced. It's a film that, once you've seen it, you cannot "unsee" it; it stays with you. It is not for everyone, but it is unquestionably a beautiful piece of cinema and has a superb performance from a child.

Very well done. I saw this on T.V. I was only 3 or 4 when it came out in 72. I watched it with my Mom and it has haunted me for all those years. Now, I completely agree that it's very well done. I love these psychological horror movies. No blood, no excessive screaming, just a slow burn leading to that sudden twist. Thanks!

I read the book years ago, over and over until the pages fell out. I wish I could find another copy. I loved the movie, it does much to convey the creepy feel of the book and the twins who played Niles and Holland were excellent!

Jerry Goldsmith's score really gives the film a beautiful soul although quite horrific at times. Masterful score.

I was a kid when I first watched this. It scared the crap out of me. Being an identical twin made it even more frightening.

"The Other"["s] horror and shock value lie in its plausibility and understatement. This is not some stupid, supernatural schlock that could never happen but a disturbing, haunting (and as of that time probably relatively unexplored) tale of child psychosis and serial murder. This is a virtually bloodless horror movie bathed in bright sunlight and uneasy idealism. Not easily forgotten and has a way of staying with you for a lifetime. A unique and original film, highly unpredictable, and full of fine performances and direction. Absolutely worth watching and of note.

"The Other was on late one Saturday night when I was a kid and I snuck into the front room to watch it. It scared the crap out of my 11 year old body! The next morning when I sat down at breakfast, my father asked me how the movie was. It shocked me that he even knew I was watching it because I had been so quiet about moving around the house. I barely had the volume on, just enough so I could hear it. I said to my dad, "how did you know?" All dad said was "Parental instinct." I was promptly grounded for a week for watching an R rated film. LoL 😂. Great movie though! It was worth the grounding.

Agreed. Very original premise, and a very well made but underrated movie. I remember walking home from school one afternoon, and ''The Other'' was playing at one of our neighborhood theaters. The poster really scared me, but I finally watched it on TV about 2 or 3 years later, and was transfixed by it, a little confused by the twist, but ultimately understood the magnitude of the horror.

Question do you think there’s a deeper twist based on the barn pre fire scene where Holland asks niles if he knows who he is and when he answers niles perrry he says are you sure? could Holland be the one who played the game after pushing niles down the well and became niles ? Everybody loved goody miles better Seems like it could be

I had a similar experience with "The Seven Faces of Dr. Lao", which came out in 1964. The little boy, "Mike Benedict" was 10 and so I was I (in fact, the actor was born just a few days before me). And that movie made a HUGE impression on me.... very very deep impression.

Thanks, folks. When TFH launched, I was hosting a weekly movie club for 60+ teens in Chicago. The timing was fortuitous; they discovered someone *else* in the world was passionate about these films!. I blogged about it in 2009: search for "Phreaky Philm Pridays." (My blog's been dormant for a few years.) Many thanks to Joe and everyone at TFH for the opportunity, and thanks for watching. And please contribute to keep TFH doing the work of keeping these films alive!

Didn't the trailer spoil the movie? Back in pre-cable days, when TV Sundays meant either old movies, religious shows or sports, this was one every few months. I think I remember it more for the score than the story.
