On this episode we take a lightly modified Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk down to Cape Spencer. It has never been off-road until now. It has 32" All Terrain Tires, Steel rocker guards, and a 2" lift. See how well it kept up with 2 JK's on 37's.

I regularly follow many a modified wrangler through all sorts of stuff, most are doubtful until they see me make it through. Though i have 32" MTs on mine when i'm on the trails. RTT's are great and all, but on a rig that uses tippy in place of flex...he's lucky there wasn't much off camber on that trail or he'd been greasy side up. Not taking anything away from the TH, but RTT's are not a great idea on them if you plan to wheel much. I wheel the piss out of mine, and you'll never even see me with a roof basket...these things need as low of a center of gravity as possible. Ruts are our biggest enemy as our low hanging control arms will drag on the inside edges and beach us out, but we don't have a pumpkin so we do have a bit more clearance dead center. At 21:00 they make these awesome things called Tow Straps. And the TH has some great tow hooks up front. Woulda had him clear of that rut in under a minute. Then there would have been no need for the 3rd guy to needlessly drive over the boards and burying them, then no need to take the time to dig them out and clean them in the stream.
@NorthBoundExpeditions
@NorthBoundExpeditions 4 жыл бұрын
Fearless Trailhawk thank you for watching and thanks for the feedback. Agreed with your observations. In this case, his TH is an overlander and this was the first real trail he ever did. We used the tractionboards because the point of the video was to see what the TH can do. He had some of his own se he could have got himself out had he needed to. I (green Jeep) was towing the trailer and down lower I needed my lockers to get through a slick spot, which is why we left the boards in place. Didn’t predict that the wider stance would end up burying them. Oh well, lesson learned. In hindsight I would have taken them out after he was done. No biggie.

EPIC OUTDOOR 4X4 ADVENTURE thank you! The Cherokee did OK. It’s rear locker helps a lot, that was very noticeable with that steep hump towards the end where I said “give it gas” but he just inched forward with a wheel in the air and made it. But the clearance issue and limited tire size is obviously its main restriction where it really limits what type of trails it can go on. This being a stock friendly trail (for Wranglers) that’s about as far as you can push it. The trail rated badge doesn’t mean it can do the same trails as a wrangler but it means it can do trails.
@_AXESUPERTRAMP_
@_AXESUPERTRAMP_ 4 жыл бұрын
@@NorthBoundExpeditions he was very good at managing the spot and getting the tires grip that course is definitely not as suitable for the Cherokee as by the fact that now all the off-road vehicles are never invaded by plastics and only the wrangler has remained true to its origin thanks God, are you still in the north? p.s also nick manages the large group well ...

Killer prod val on the vid. I’m a new TH owner and I absolutely love it. Big recommendation is to grab one of those “Pedal Commanders”... I thought it was gimmicky at first, but damn was I wrong. In 4 low the stock pedal response is WAAAYYY too sensitive. Set that PC to “ECO” mode, and you’ll get the perfect amount of travel back in the pedal. Plus the city mode is great for pulling into traffic or passing. Thanks again for the vid!

I can fit an enormous amount of gear in it. Which gives me the cargo area to stretch out in. But it doesn't take up near the amount of space that tent rig does. I took my 2015 KL Trailhawk offloading for the first time a few weeks ago. Other than swapping out the Firestone tires it came with for BFG KO2s in the same size, the car is bone stock. I was shocked at how capable it was. I took it through some pretty hairy spots and it handled everything really well. I did have to get winched out from some really deep mud, but that was mostly operator error -- I put it in 4low/lock and tried to just crawl through it. The rest of the day, when I encountered similar mud bogs, I just gunned it and bombed on through.

That’s awesome! I’m about to buy some K02s for my 2019 hyper blue Cherokee Trailhawk. How do you like them? Does it make a big difference driving/mileage/look? It’s between those and the Toyo Open Country. I used to hate the 2015 style headlights but honestly on the Trailhawk trim with an added brush guard/roof rack, it looks more rugged than the newer models. Very nice SUVs.
@bsenka
@bsenka 2 жыл бұрын
@@AV-bz2zv The look adds just the right amount of extra ruggedness while not looking "angry-competitive" to people on the street who may not be off-road enthusiasts. I have not noticed a difference in fuel economy or road noise. The main reason that I chose them though, is that they are true all-weather-all-terrains that are snowflake rated for winter. I live in Winnipeg where you really need winter tires half the year, and this saves me from needing multiple sets.

Great production value in your video! I enjoyed watching it! That Trailhawk looked very stock and the driver very inexperienced. I have a 2017 Cherokee TH and I know they have their limitations. They are not Wranglers, so if you want to do serious wheeling, get a dog gone Wrangler (CJ) and an old one at that IMO. An old Cherokee (pre-14) would work too. You have to be a mechanic to own an old rig or you'll go broke keeping it running though! BTW, this trail didn't look all that serious. Very pretty out there, but not a crazy trail, especially for a Wrangler or Cherokee TH, modified or not, for that matter. I like the trailer that Wrangler was pulling! I don't really get the fixed tent on top rig on the TH. A good thing about the TH is that it's pretty small. The tent makes it bigger and top heavy to boot. Hard to mix "serious" wheeling with that on top! It's going to get hung up, or tip you over on a side hill.

@NorthBoundExpeditions
@NorthBoundExpeditions 4 жыл бұрын
Chisung Lee traction boards would be the easiest way. The Trailhawk doesn’t have any direct points to hook to unless you use hooks and strap adapters for the hilift that can attach to its tow hooks or wheels. Otherwise if you have steel rock rails on it you can lift it on the side. But a hilift isn’t much of a recovery tool. Using them as “winch” is extremely hard. Best invest in a bumper with a winch option.

@jacobfreed5060
@jacobfreed5060 3 жыл бұрын
Mods don’t void your warranty outright. Do some research and make friends with your dealership. Also the magnusson act is there to keep your warranty from being voided provided your mods can’t be directly linked to any damage that is caused which is what actually voids the warranty for the given part etc.
@NorthBoundExpeditions
@NorthBoundExpeditions 3 жыл бұрын
Just seeing this now. I modified mine as soon as I got it. Never worrried about the warranty too much and never had any real issues as a result either. Nothing ever broke that would have been covered under warranty. Only claims I ever had were recalls.

Yeah, when I picked up the RTT, they suggested I could put it slightly over the passenger side to get more room for the annex. It makes sense, but it's not ideal when off-roading. Considering I don't use the annex much, I will put it centre next year.
